Btw: My favorite calculator is soulver. http://www.acqualia.com/soulver/
Marco Arment has a nice piece on soulver and good interface design: http://www.marco.org/441168915
> "We’re often told that we should design our websites and software to mimic real-life objects. The iPhone strengthened this idiom, and Apple has been driving this home hard for the iPad. But it’s not absolute, and it’s not always the best idea. My favorite counterexample is the typical calculator app:"
PCalc is the more scientific route, but also very nice: http://www.pcalc.com/iphone/
I do the arithmetic and add the tax and deposit to each individual taxable item.
So ...
Category | Memo | Outflow |
---|---|---|
Groceries | Canned black beans | .79 |
Groceries | Warm peanuts, a buck | 1.09 |
Vices | Boatswain Stout, 2.49 plus tax and deposit | 2.76 |
The wise legislators of The Empire State have determined that any warmed food shall be taxed at 8.875%, and any carbonated beverage shall be taxed and a deposit charged on the container. I use the PCalc app on my iPhone because I can swipe it in and out without losing my YNAB context.
I do not track the taxes and deposits individually because that would be just too splitty.
All I can find is this one.
I stick to using Spotlight. I don't care that it takes up a large portion of the screen since ⌘ + space easily hides it without removing the entered text.
