I googled it and found this wikileaks post from the FBI. Apparently pedophiles use this symbol to identify themselves, sometimes stamping it into jewelry.
The heart inside a heart implies that the person likes girls. A triangle inside a triangle implies boys.
I'm sure the person who put it in the tip jar didn't realize what it was, but it still makes me uncomfortable.
Edit: My top post is now about pedophile secret codes, I totally just got added to some watchlist.
Oh god. And I learn about this on reddit. According to LE, 4 dead and 10 wounded. Also according to various accounts driver says that the bus started moving on its own and brakes didn't work, or told that he mixed up brake and throttle pedals (maybe it's both in succession).
Methanol is far more difficult to ignite than gasoline and burns about 60% slower. A methanol fire releases energy at around 20% of the rate of a gasoline fire, resulting in a much cooler flame. This results in a much less dangerous fire that is easier to contain with proper protocols. Unlike gasoline, water is acceptable and even preferred as a fire suppressant, since this both cools the fire and rapidly dilutes the fuel below the concentration where it will maintain self-flammability. These facts mean that, as a vehicle fuel, methanol has great safety advantages over gasoline.[15] Ethanol shares many of these same advantages.
Since methanol vapor is heavier than air, it will linger close to the ground or in a pit unless there is good ventilation, and if the concentration of methanol is above 6.7% in air it can be lit by a spark and will explode above 54 F / 12 C. Once ablaze, an undiluted methanol fire gives off very little visible light, making it potentially very hard to see the fire or even estimate its size in bright daylight, although in the vast majority of cases, existing pollutants or flammables in the fire (such as tires or asphalt) will color and enhance the visibility of the fire. Ethanol, natural gas, hydrogen, and other existing fuels offer similar fire-safety challenges, and standard safety and firefighting protocols exist for all such fuels.[16]

This is actually some pretty funny wordplay. On the top it says "Used PC and parts shop" and on the left "MEGA CHEAP." Binbows is very close to <em>binbou</em> which means "poor" and the store's actual name seems to be Michaelsoft.

To be fair, the Spanish word ananá is only used in certain parts of South America. In most of the Spanish-speaking world, that fruit is called piña.
Sorry about the ticket. I know those can suck but overfilled fire extinguishers do have a tendency to not discharge properly as you can see in this link
Also I like how you leave out the other safety violations you had or that you were warned about beforehand. That particular ticket can't be given by us without one of those conditions.

"Amok is a Malay word for the homicidal sprees occasionally undertaken by lonely, Indochinese men who have suffered a loss of love, a loss of money, or a loss of face. The syndrome has been described in a culture even more remote from the West: the stone-age foragers of Papua New Guinea.
The amok man is patently out of his mind, an automaton oblivious to his surroundings and unreachable by appeals or threats. But his rampage is preceded by lengthy brooding over failure, and is carefully planned as a means of deliverance from an unbearable situation. The amok state is chillingly cognitive. It is triggered not by a stimulus, not by a tumor, not by a random spurt of brain chemicals, but by an idea. The idea is so standard that the following summary of the amok mind-set, composed in 1968 by a psychiatrist who had interviewed seven hospitalized amoks in Papua New Guinea, is an apt description of the the thoughts of mass murderers continents and decades away: >"I am not an important man... I possess only my personal sense of dignity. My life has been reduced to nothing by an intolerable insult. Therefore, I have nothing to lose except my life, which is nothing, so I trade my life for yours, as your life is favoured. The exchange is in my favour, so I shall not only kill you, but I shall kill many of you, and at the same time rehabilitate myself in the eyes of the group of which I am a member, even though I might be killed in the process."
The amok syndrome is an extreme instance of the puzzle of human emotions. Exotic at first glance, upon scrutiny they turn out to be universal; quintessentially irrational, they are tightly interwoven with abstract thought and have a cold logic of their own.
From How The Mind Works by Steven Pinker"
Perhaps, but then again avian respiration isn't the same as mammalian. Birds don't take breaths the same way mammals do; they have air bladders all up and down their body that "store" breaths of air before the lungs draw the air. All the air sacs at the rear of the bird have to be filled before the lungs can do their job.
This isn't a trend. It's just something a photographer started doing for the sake of art.
Its also been written about many times over the past couple years.

Doesn't work. There was a giant infestation in the late 70's in Schenectady, NY, here is the only reference I can find to it:
> In 1979, the police in Schenectady, N.Y., responded to a complaint about a barking dog. When they arrived, however, they found cockroaches streaming from the windows of a two-family home, raining down from trees and darting into the street. Inside, roaches had plastered every wall like stucco and had left bites all over a 64-year-old woman and her 24 dogs, which, it turned out, had been barking for good reason. The swarm comprised approximately one million German cockroaches, perhaps the largest household infestation ever recorded.
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/25/magazine/25PHENOM.html
They combated that infestation by ~~burning~~ the house.... Once the house was set on fire, the roaches blanketed the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful in finding any video of the incident.
EDIT: She not only had 24 dogs, but also had 22 cats. I was told they burned the house, but my research just says it was demolished.... Still pretty fucked....

Hey! Whale biologist here! This is correct n' all, but it wasn't the case in this instance - this whale was very much still alive when this photo was taken.
This was a juvenile minke whale that came into Halifax harbour, bobbing upright as above; it was still alive when snapped here, and died from its injuries overnight shortly after. From the Marine Animal Response Society:
> On July 29th, a whale was reported in distress at the entrance to Halifax harbour. Upon arrival, we found a minke whale bobbing vertically in the water with its tongue completely swollen. Based on the small size of the animal, it may have been still dependent on its mother, which was nowhere to be seen. Due to its young age and severe injury, the animal was unlikely to survive. After consulting with veterinarians, representatives from MARS, DFO and DNR responded the following day to determine the best course of action for this young whale, but found that it had died overnight. While retrieving the carcass we discovered it had been entangled in some old, lost fishing gear. The carcass was taken to the Agricultural College in Truro where a necropsy was conducted. We found that there were signs of a physical injury to the animals jaw. It’s possible, while anchored by the fishing gear, the animal was hit by a vessel causing its tongue to swell. The remains were left at the Agricultural College for a study on composting.
Poor thing.
Here's a picture of the same whale after they hauled the carcass out the water - tongue still inflated!
FAKE!
Just kidding, it's real. Still not sure what he is, but - in another shot, you can see a "CWF" on the back of his getup. South Africa seems nice.
I'm Dominican-American, my parents are both from DR. There is stigma for the reasons mentioned above. A lot of it comes from the history with Haiti. To put it in perspective, Haitians in DR are viewed like Mexican immigrants in the southern U.S. states. Cheap labor, but often unwanted. It's a terrible stereotype/stigma that's common in DR. It's even sadder being that most of the population is of darker (black) skin color because of our ancestry.
Additionally, the country had a dictator named Trujillo in the early 20th century that was extremely racist. He was so racist that he had thousands of Haitians (and dark-skinned Dominicans) slaughtered in what's known as the Parsley Masacre .
He also offered sanctuary to fleeing/emigrating European refugees (amongst those, the Jewish), in attempts to "lighten the Dominican race". While many people today are ignorant as to why they have a stigma towards darker-skinned individuals, it all stems from this dark history (no pun intended).
I was born and raised here in the U.S., so thankfully I wasn't exposed to this other than when I would visit for a couple of months during summer break as a kid. Even then, my I unasked for nickname was "Moreno" though I'm more of a brown/tan complexion.
My wife just so happens to be white, with no motive on my end other than me just loving and wanting to be with her. Family members joke that I'm "refinando la raza" (refining the race) because I married a white woman with blond hair and blue eyes, and our kids are naturally lighter skinned than me. It's honestly pretty fucking annoying.
The printers are not laser they are high pressure ink jet systems.
I had to service units much like the one in the above link while working at a bread factory.
The print head is the small rectangular box on the stand. It is connected to the rest of the printer by hose/wire bundle. The ink is stored in large bottles that are loaded into the larger main housing of the printer.
They can shoot the ink a good distance (300mm for the model in the link) and still produce a readable image. If the target is porous enough to absorb some of the ink it will print on it.
Wait, credit cards? How old (or new) is this sign? Makes me think it's a joke of some sort.

She should have drove to Cape Girardeau.

I've had the same problem with my Mac and had it checked out and they couldn't find any issues that would cause it to overheat. Installed smcFanControl and no longer have the overheating problem. Used to be hot to touch with minimal programs running. Brings down the temperature in a few minutes.
This sign was produced as a novelty during the 1960's and 1970's.
Here is an article from the <strong>Schenectady Gazette - Mar 22, 1973</strong> that makes reference to a story in Playboy magazine that mentions the same sign hanging outside the Beth El Medical Center.
For those interested, here is a link to the complete article.

>What motorcycles show the greatest risks? Supersport bike riders have death rates that are four times greater than average for all motorcycle types, says the IIHS. These so-called rockets are essentially racing bikes modified for highway use. Engineered for speed, they typically have more horsepower per pound than other bikes. A 2006 model Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, for example, produces 111 horsepower and weighs 404 pounds. In contrast, the 2006 model Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide, a touring motorcycle, produces 65 horsepower and weighs 788 pounds.
>"Supersport motorcycles are indeed nimble and quick, but they also can be deadly," says Anne McCartt, Institute senior vice president for research. "These bikes made up less than 10 percent of registered motorcycles in 2005 but accounted for over 25 percent of rider deaths."
>The fatality rates for cruiser and "standard" riders rank the lowest, at 5.7 deaths per 10,000 registered motorcycles. Touring bikes, such as the Harley example, averaged 6.5 deaths, with sport bikes totaling 10.7 deaths per 10,000.
What you have right there was originally called a "Mansfield Gate". Named so because it was added to trailer designs after Jane Mansfield lost her life in a car accident when the car she was driving collided with the rear end of just such a trailer. IIRC, she was decapitated, and her four kids were with her in the car.

When they do so they'll likely see that the number one inbound search term is 'jailbait', and if they don't know too much about the site and have any sort of moral compass might decide that they'd rather their company not be associated with 'child porn' and so take their money elsewhere.
I just sold my truck on craigslist and had a guy from around 1200 miles away call me up and tell me that he'd buy it sight unseen for full asking price. Using, of course, cashier's checks. Noped right the fuck out of that deal. He had a very hustle approach about him so it was easy for me to detect, but I've bought and sold quite a few vehicles and I'll tell ya, for your average joe you wouldn't see it coming. I read something about a ring of thieves doing this very thing not too long ago out of chicago, actually.

Well it's actually REALLY cool: a male black widow can tell how recently a female spider has fed using only cues on her web. A well-fed female is less likely to eat her mate than a starved female, and somehow, he can detect clues of her recent foraging success even when the female is not in the web! It is possible, but the task is very difficult and labor intensive.
The biggest issue is gathering enough spider silk. Unlike silk worms which can be housed in very dense populations, spiders tend to prey on one another if attempts are made to gather many in one place. This would almost restrict the silk gathering to either very large isolating structures or from spiders in the wild.
The second issue you would need to deal with is that much of the spider silk is covered with additional materials to make them sticky. This would make spinning into some kind of thread almost impossible without coating the silk with a material like diatomaceous earth or treating it with a solvent to remove these materials. Either way, this would tend to lessen the overall strength of the threads.
The final issue is the strength and rarity of the spider silk means that you would want to use the smallest diameter thread possible. This would mean having over 1000 threads per inch (and this could be very much higher in number). This might push the limits of most looms.
Artificial spider silk has been investigated as fibers for cloth. It seems to have properties similar to Kevlar. Source(s): http://www.encyclopedia.com/SearchResults.aspx?Q=Silk&StartAt=61
To be clear: While smog is serious issue in Almaty, it is not that bad all the time. This kind of heavy smog happens rarely due to certain weather conditions. Also there is an app to monitor air quality in Almaty: AUA from kazakh ауа [aoua], meaning air. Also local authorities are trying to hide real air pollution from the public and were actively pressuring App developers some time ago. Their main point was that app developers are not authorized official source for air monitoring data and thus can't publish their own monitoring data since it would spread disinformation and panic among population. Not aware of current situation tho.

here's another angle, you can see it's the same piece by the cracks, and you can see that there's a rectangular hole in the kerb around the wood.
Edit: Yes. "kerb" is the British spelling of "curb".
Apparently "curb" is actually the original spelling, however.
I think the reference was to Holden's last name, Caulfield.
Also, because I'm on this account, here's the etymology for the word "caul":
>caul:early 14c., "close-fitting cap worn by women," from Fr. cale "cap," back formation from calotte, from It. callotta, from L. calautica "type of female headdress with pendent lappets," a foreign word of unknown origin. Medical use, in reference to various membranes, dates to late 14c. Especially of the amnion enclosing the fetus before birth from 1540s. This, if the child is born draped in it, was supersititously supposed to protect against drowning (cauls were advertised for sale in British newspapers through WWI).

I seriously don't understand why this is in the WTF subreddit, or why people are commenting with that exact sentiment.
This isn't cruel — quite the contrary — but it isn't a vacation either. This is well below the current standard of living in Norway, so there is no incentive to commit crime based on prison facilities.
This is a rehabilitation prison. People go out of there much more likely to become productive and valuable, tax paying members of the community.
Our goal isn't to avenge the crime victim, and should be either. If the goal is to reduce crime rates, the reaction shouldn't be "WTF?!", it should be "What can we do to make this work elsewhere?"
EDIT: Also to serve here, you have to be considered low-risk, and you have to be motivated. Google translate of prison's web page
X-Plane is pretty much the current gold-standard for flight sims in the home and is also used commercially in multi-axis hydraulic professional flight sims. It is pretty incredible how much realism they simulate. And the feature set between the home and commercial versions is virtually identical. Home is pretty much only missing the stuff required to control spherical/cylindrical projection screens and software to interface with physical high end flight control systems.
Pretty nuts what you can get for $60 these days. And a nice bonus is the founder and CEO of the company that makes X-Plane is a major fighter of copyright trolls.

I don't know if that's a good source or not but even if it's close... these guys have to run around and give emergency medical care, deal with junkies and get traumatized for $34-40k/year? Fucksakes. Yeah, they're underpaid.
The most likely technical explanation of this is that Amazon used to hash their passwords with the following function
old_unix_crypt( toUpperCase (password) )
The man page of crypt states clearly that it truncates the input to 8 characters. (It also truncates each character to 7 bits but the consequences of that are less obvious)
How should Amazon have solved this without user interruption? (Assuming it doesn't store the cleartext passwords)
implement a better hash function that takes into account every bit of the full input (that it has done)
on the first succesfull login of a user with the old hash function, rehash with the stronger function and update the database (this is hasn't done)
This would have allowed for a seamless upgrade, with no visible user interruption.
Don't think I meet those qualifications.

Dear German (and other foreign) friends, I'd like to make you aware of the existence of VPNs. They're pretty cheap, and will unblock all of this stuff as well as mask your browsing history to your ISP. Personally, I use StrongVPN. It's like, 8 bucks a month USD and if you get a server in the states, your computer will act as if you're located in the US, bypassing all of those stupid location filters.
Edit: There might be a speed hit given the cross-country internet, but trust me, it's worth it. (Example of speed hit would be say, normal ISP is 50 mbit, but you'd only get 10-15 on the VPN.)

and all that smoke speaks of, like you said, a firework
one final point: getting hit my lightning in car is not impossible, just unlikely. and you are in a faraday cage
https://weather.com/storms/tornado/news/what-happens-when-lightning-hits-car-20140625
a faraday cage is a physical effect where the current stays on the outside of a metal object. meaning you should be safe (blown out windows, car losing control, electronics going haywire and deploying airbags, etc, notwithstanding)
Erm... I meant actual or updated. Not a native English speaker, though.
However, it could make sense as an intransitive verb... to become actual.
Edit: grammar.
While I may very well be the definition of 'Straight hair and curly teeth', I'll leave this here for our American cousins to ponder, with a smile of course:

If anyone is wondering why he can't drink, I believe, from my understanding of rabies, it is because once rabies enters the brain it changes some behaviors of the host. There is the more commonly known behavioral change of making the host more aggressive, but there is another one (the one displayed here). What rabies does, is that it makes the host "afraid" of water and unable drink it. This is key because when you add this with the aggression, you get a host that wants to bite or attack something else with a mouth full of infected saliva that the host cannot swallow or wash out do to this fear of water, thus making the passing on of rabies much more effective. ~~I'm not sure what it changes in the brain though to cause this so maybe someone with a little bit more experience can help out.~~
Edit: Here's an interesting NPR RadioLab piece on rabies and the Milwaukee Protocol and Jeanna Giese, one of the few people to survive rabies without receiving the vaccination
TL;DR?: He's scared of water
Edit 2: As /u/MrsMasterBlaster and /u/Tikka_T3 pointed out the fear is more of a reaction to the muscles in the man's throat spasming. He doesn't want the rabies to make his throat to hurt so he doesn't like the water.
I bought a cheapie borescope for $10 that connects to USB or micro USB. It's not fancy, but it works. Look on eBay, or, if you have time and want it even cheaper, go to AliExpress.
Edit: On android, you should use the apps Canberra Fi or USB Camera. Others may work.
Except it's not you at all and it's been reposted MANY times. Here's the latest example: http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/ugr8f/my_friends_incredible_van_gogh_makeup_no_photoshop/
Oh and here's an article from January of last year about it: http://gizmodo.com/5743681/sometimes-the-answer-is-more-simple-than-you-think
/u/Hoogles isn't wrong. Tractor trailers have huge blind spots. Seriously, you don't want one behind you or to your left. To your right is even dangerous. Driving around a vehicle with an unladen Class 8 trailer that weighs an average of 40,000 lbs moving at 55mph (realistically 65mph) is no joke. Your little Honda or "massive" SUV will not win. Let alone the guy and kid on the bike in this video.

I made an HTML 5 gif here so that people that aren't using Alien Blue can see what this gif looks like sped up. I think that you have to click the link to see it sped up if you are using RES.
Both phase and faze are actual words (they're homophones).
Faze (v): to cause to be disturbed or disconcerted
Phase (v): to synchronize or correlate
Also, yeah, it is a bit odd to see legitimately useful language comments here isn't it? But so long as they're not being used in a degrading manner or to lessen an otherwise strong argument, I guess who cares.
It was drugs and not directly this but I want to say in the book Freakonomics (Possibly Predictably Irrational) there is a chapter about how gangs are structured after the author hung out with one for research. I guess it's pretty well organized and corporate like, for larger gangs especially.
Teens get into more accidents than seniors, but seniors get into more accidents than the middle aged (30-65), but very elderly seniors match the youngest teens in accident frequency.
I fully support stricter driving education requirements for teen drivers and periodic testing of elderly drivers who are 70+ (such as every other year.)
my wife's Android phone was stolen 2 weeks ago. I downloaded a free app called Android Lost. You register on their site, and it pushes it to your device remotely. You use your gmail account that is linked to your device.
Long story short, it provides a ton of information, and I was able to contact the police and retrieve her phone within 2 hours of installing the app.
I don't know for sure that it would work on a tablet, but it might. http://www.androidlost.com/
edit here is a second app that allows AndroidLost to work on a tablet. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost.jumpstart&hl=en
Since early 2010, at least. Yelp figured out there's little money to be made from providing unbiased reviews that people can trust. But they cash in big when businesses subscribe for hundreds of dollars per month to their services. So guess what their business model evolved into?
His username is actually a reference to a song which discourages infidelity. It's about a woman suspecting her boyfriend of cheating on her and demanding that he let her smell his dick to determine if he was using it for sex.
Nice, I like the way Wolfram represents the equation! I also like how it can tell me the amount of carbohydrates in a cubic light year of bananas, too.
I just went to a Malaysian island on the South China Sea called Tioman island. Rainforest, beaches. Pristine beautiful place, completely getting TRASHED. Garbage everywhere, like some tweakers front yard, but out in nature. Cigarette butts and broken glass in the sand. Shoes and plastic bags, liquor bottles thrown in the pond.
People just don't give a fuck. It's so frustrating!
EDIT to add: http://wikitravel.org/en/Tioman
It was mostly about my math skills and political beliefs. This was thrown in there and I was caught off guard.
EDIT: What goldflakes is saying is true. I looked into it and the researcher who created the survey goldflakes links also created the survey I took. However, the questions are a bit different in the two surveys because his link is entirely based on morality questions like this.
Here is a Link to the researcher in question. The first HIT is my survey and the second HIT is goldflakes'.
EDIT2: I also think the math section was to somewhat test morals as well, apparently the answer to the questions were located on the screen and they ask you if it is ok to use them.
just... wow.
It's from instructables. I would pair it with the mouse-mouse someone else posted there.
#3.
a. To oppose or resist with boldness and assurance: defied the blockade by sailing straight through it.
b. To refuse to submit to or cooperate with: defied the court order by leaving the country.
To be unaffected by; resist or withstand: "So the plague defied all medicines" (Daniel Defoe).
To challenge or dare (someone) to do something:* She defied her accusers to prove their charges.*
From what I can tell, hotels with no reviews at all are at the bottom of the rankings. I found only one reviewed hotel with a worse rating, America's Best Inn Birmingham. There is actually one of these in the general area of my office park, it is meth/prostitute city. We call it America's Worst.

OP's friend most likely works at SuperCheap Auto
You are correct. According to this article, it's a Chinese guy who cut off his fingertip and decided to grow a new one on his stomach.
FYI: It's Loveland on Jeju Island, South Korea.
If you ever go to Jeju, try the horse sashimi and black pig and mandarin makgoelli at Mawon

Yeah, well it was supposed to be "brown skinned girl" and was about an interracial relationship. Van Morrison changed the lyrics so radio stations would play it. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2359
