These actions are illegal; however, what paperwork did you sign in regards to the rental agreement?
The first thing Service Alberta will do is ask to see your paperwork. If it was verbal or handshake agreement, without paperwork, you're going to have your work cut out for you.
Without paperwork, the landlord could claim you are just friends he's helping out, and there is no such agreement, in other words, he's 'letting you crash there in his house' and it would be his word against yours.
If you haven't already - DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.
Times, dates, cheque numbers, payments, all.
Are you paying in cash? Get bank drafts made out in your landlords name. Traceable, cash isn't - document every incident, phone calls, emails, texts, verbal , anything.
Get yourself a webcam for the house. You can get a free one through the app stores, this is more an auto one, but runs non stop - Autoguard. Leave it running, post a note in both front and back doors that give notice that tell people they are on camera. Record everything.

Hm.... Autoguard Blackbox: has a $2.99 Pro version that allows YouTube uploading and multitwindow. Thanks for letting me know, I'll look into it.
It's actually just my galaxy s5 mounted behind my rearview mirror. I use an app called "Autoguard" to take the vid and it tracks my speed as well.
Actually, if you have an android phone, this dashcam is free. You can get the pro version for about 3 bucks . It saves automatically, you can set recording time, resolution, save it to your YouTube channel automatically or your memory card. Has google maps overlayed on top of camera on one side you can still use GPS for driving. I have this; it's bloody awesome. You can even leave the dashcam running while the car is off, and it will keep recording. Autoguard - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en
I've recorded ~20 minutes at 1080 before. I generally don't record clips longer than 15 minutes because then it counts against your storage space in Google Photos.
One other thing you can look at is using a dashcam app which will automatically split the video into whatever lengths you want. I've used https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en on multiple phones including the 6p on many hours-long drives without issue. The paid version lets you run it in the background or screen off as well.
This is the app I use. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
You can try the paid version for free for a week from within the free version. Best performance on Android 5.0.1+. There is an iOS version also.
I use AutoGuard (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en).
Its set to record once the phone starts receiving power (which means the car is on). And I have it set to allocate 24 GB of the memory for video recordings and it just deletes the oldest video when it runs out of space and it takes videos in 15 minute intervals. So I get more or less 8-ish hours of driving.
I recommend buying Pro for the ability to record with the screen off. The GNex just burns up if its recording with the screen on. It runs cool otherwise.
For Android AutoGuard rated 4.2 price free-2.99

And I use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
I'm sure there is an app for iPhone users.

I use AutoGuard Dashcam - Blackbox, I paid for the full version via google rewards money. As for the mount I used the case that was provided with the Moto E (exclusive to Verizon Prepaid model) and attached a 1/2" strip of bent/partially curled/hook shaped sheet metal attached via super glue (sand both contact surfaces to get the best joint). I just took that and hooked it onto my headliner, where it meets the windshield with a piece of 3M double sided tape and it worked perfectly. The factory shaded area of the front windshield, which helped hide the camera from plain view to prevent people from wanting to break into my car for the phone.
I also got one of those wide-angle attachable lenses from eBay for $1 and hot glued it directly to the device to give me a bigger field of view. Couple that with home made micro usb cables attached to standard car chargers directly wired to the fuse box.
In total I think it costs about $29 per car, which includes a 64gb MicroSDHC card.
It was nothing special, just a regular dash cam app, Auto Guard.
I eventually abandoned it because the combination of recording, gps'ing my ride, and playing mp3s was just trashing my battery. (plus this was way before video stabilization, so everything was kinda jello.)
Autoguard is one I've used in the past and have just reinstalled on my S10+ and when selecting the camera there and two choices just called rear camera and one called front camera. One rear camera is the normal one and the other is the wide angle one.
Here is a youtube search for recordings made with Autoguard over the years (keep in mind the quality varies with the type of phones people are using)
I am NOT an employee of the company that makes Autoguard, by the way.
If you don't mind using a window mount for your smart phone, this app for Android is pretty nice:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
I liked it so much after only a day or so using it, I bought the "pro" version. It has a lot of nice features (it even has a setting for automatic "dial 911" crash sensing).
Whats your budget?
You can download the AutoGuard app on an old cell phone and rubber band it to your review mirror.
Have you considered just using your phone ? Autoguard has worked well for me. And all you then need is a mount, or alternatively a cheap phone you can leave in the car with no SIM but wifi turned on.

$200? Yikes. If you have a dash mount for your cell phone, you can buy dashcam apps for less than a cup of coffee. I use this one and it starts and stops recording automatically whenever my car Bluetooth connects and disconnects. I never have to think about it.
I've posted this before, but if you own an old smartphone that is inactive, and it can connect to wifi, you can install Autoguard and get a free dashcam from that old cellphone that is currently collecting dust.
Source - using Autoguard on a Samsung Galaxy S, and Samsung Galaxy S4 - installed in my inlaws and grandparents vehicle on their old Galaxy S3 and Sony Xperia. It saves to memory, you can even upload your videos to YouTube if you wish.
Android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en
For those who think they can't afford $50 to save themselves a world of pain, then I suggest turning your smartphone or spare mobile device into a dash cam. I use a crappy Samsung Galaxy Light for this sole purpose, works out pretty well. Thankfully, I've never been an in accident, but it's captured a nice lightning storm or two. There's a pretty good dashcam for free you can get on your phone. Ive been using it myself for the last 6 months - i liked it so much i bought the pro version which gives you more options.
Autoguard - (Android)
I prefer AutoGuard to Daily Voyager.
The thing is, if I have a new phone, I'm going to want to use that for my dash cam since I won't want to compromise on video quality.
I've actually been using my phone as a dashcam with this app. Thankfully I have an SD card so there's a lot of available storage, but even on smaller storage phones I think it should work fine - all you need is a mount for your phone.
I used Autoguard on my S4 too but found the quality to be poor and it would overheat quite easily, possibly because I was charging at the same time, but I couldn't not charge and use it else I'd end up at my destination with a severely low battery.
If your phone has a decent camera there are a few really nice dash cam apps.
I use AutoGuard which is really nice because it runs in the background and you can have your map or music app up in front so the video doesn't distract you and if someone, say a cop, sees it they won't suspect you're recording them and shoot you.
You assign it a set amount of space anywhere you like on your device (or removable media) in which to store footage and it just erases the oldest videos as it runs out of space.
It also flags anything it thinks may be a crash (via accelerometer data) to be preserved against the aforementioned auto deletion.
You can of course flag things to preserve manually as well.

I had the pro-version.
I think I notice a pattern in the /r/AmIFreeToGo subreddit. I also have a Wrangler, but I use Autoguard on my Note 4 with this window mount. You can set it to run in the background of your phone while it is locked. It autosaves and autorecords. Record in 1080p, not the greatest but decent. Can set to e-mail you the information too, average speeds on each stretch of road, geolocation with speed tagging. For $2.99 I've gotten more use out of it than anything else. You can take it with you during the police encounter so something won't be out of shot. Requires password protection to retrieve videos and will continue to record while in range of your cars bluetooth, but you can have it run until battery runs out as well.
There are a number of apps that will do this. This is first one that comes up when I search dash cam: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
It's not as "set and forget" as other options, but....worth a look I guess.
I have used AutoGuard Dash Cam in the past with success.
There is another app called Auto Guard. I know its for android. I know nothing about iOS.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
I use this android app in a phone mount, just forward, not behind, but it catches twats. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en
With this free app you can make a dashcam out of an old cell phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
Or you can use a cellphone app to do the same thing.
Here's one for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard
You can get apps for your phones for this activity. I use Auto Guard.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en
Can you use your phone as a video recorder while in android auto mode? I have this app installed:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en
Here is a small list of apps that I use everyday.
AutoGuard, turns your phone into a dashcam. You get full 1080p recordings with audio, automatically turns on when it connect to your cars bluetooth, automatically saves over your last recording unless you mark to save it. If you are in a collision it automatically marks the recording for saving so it doesnt get deleted.
Unified Remote, lets you completely control your pc and any infrared controlled devices (pc over wifi). Perfect for when you never want to leave your bed.
Sleep as Android, like Sleep Cycle this wakes you up inbetween sleep cycles to help you feel more energized in the morning. It can also records noises you make during sleep(great for recording silly sleep talking), has a few different alarm choices for waking up (shaking the phone, scanning a QR code I like to put mine in the bathroom as it forces me out of bed, solve a math problem, or lets you enter a dream diary), how much you move during your sleep and using that information it creates nice graphs on your sleep patterns/sleep deficit.
Geo Tracker, turn it on and it will track the route your phone is travelling on a map using gps. I use this for when I want to go on a hike or take my dogs for a walk. It's great for recording how far/long you are taking your walk for.
Twilight, turns off the blue light emitted from your phone, great for using before bed. Recent research suggests that exposure to blue light before sleep may distort your natural (circadian) rhythm and cause inability to fall asleep.
AutoGuard for Android is good.
Why not both?
I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en
AutoGuard seems like a decent dashcam app.
