I was glad that they said capped plans can now tether for free. Not for unlimited plans though, they still have to pay. Thanks FCC!
pressurenet will track and upload your readings, and view a map with everyone else's readings. It's not a very good visualization of the stored data though, but it's got potential.
I used to use Bacon Reader, but I think Reddit Sync is the new best Android Reddit application. It's gorgeous, fast, and intuitive.
Unified Remote does everything ootb. Full version has more apps premade, but the free version includes spotify, vlc, wmp, standard keyboard+mouse etc.
To wake the pc you need to enable wol (Wake-on-lan) in your BIOS . There's apps to do that also - I've never used it, but it should be trivial if your computer supports wol. First google hit for me searching android wake on lan.
Here is mine. I really am loving the nice simple look. http://i.imgur.com/g6G7U.png
Edit- A bit more info on how I did this 1. WP clock live wall paper 2. Stock launcher with her icons made using desktop visualizer and metro station - metro station to make the icons I wanted then I used desktop visualizer to make a widget that would open the desired program. 3. Part of it is probably that you're running newer software on an older device (updated Play apps, updated launchers, updated OS, etc.), all of which over time take more advantage of faster modern phones.
If you're experiencing a slow down over just a few months, there could be other factors as well. This article has some advice, including some things which are root-only, and which newer Android updates do by default now: http://www.howtogeek.com/183004/why-android-phones-slow-down-over-time-and-how-to-speed-them-up/
I agree, also you should post this in /r/android it's possible the fact you have a Gnex is unrelated to whatever if causing the phone hax. Something you can do is install lookout to see if you have any viruses.
Sixaxis Compatibility Checker (to confirm successful Bluetooth pairing), then the $1.99 paid version to use the controller.
I used this altimeter on a flight yesterday.
When I was taking readings, the cabin was pressurized to about 7kft (2km).
Works perfectly with 'Play Movies' in AOKP b30.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_time
Looks like something happened with the internal time
A funny glitch in older iPods was related to this where if the internal time gets screwed up like yours did, and somebody guesses the wrong password and locks the device for a certain time, you could end up with [this issue](http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/54386/iPod+disabled+for+21%2B+million+minutes+(can't+restore)
It doesn't seem to work if your bookmarks are encrypted in Chrome sync. You'll have to:
AFAIK, Facebook is still not adhering to Google's API. I would imagine that the fact that it is still present in the Accounts menu is shear lack of action on FB's part to remove the code that makes it appear there.
In the mean time, use this for all your FB syncing needs. I just recently installed it ($0.99) it works exactly as well as stock Facebook should--status updates, profile photos, and links directly to the Facebook app when clicked in the contact info.
From Engadget's review of the phone: > Using Google Navigation with LTE enabled? The battery drained so fast our in-car charger couldn't keep up, leaving us unsure of which exit to take off the 101.
They did go on to say that it was OK if you changed to 3G. I agree though, this is pretty bad. It really shouldn't be using that much power.
> This presents another problem with the lack of SD card; no easy way to backup all the data on the device.
You could install AirDroid. After clicking on Files, you can right click on a folder and choose "Download as ZIP".
Light Flow Lite. It allows you to set up different LED, vibration, and sound notifications for stuff like text messages, emails, calls, and a bunch of other apps.
You need to flash the new zip file to update, nothing will happen automatically. If you do not wipe /data via CWM then you will not need to reinstall your apps. But please read the instructions for the ROM you are using.
For AOKP, if you are upgrading from Build 21 to M3 then you do NOT need to wipe /data, If you are on an earlier version such as M2, the you do NEED to wipe /data to ensure that everything works correctly. Either way, you NEED to flash the latest GAPPs zip after the ROM, this can found on the AOKP site.
OLED screens emit light at the pixel level. They have no backlight. Thus, darker themes may save battery.
EDIT: Disclosure, I did not downmod your comment.
With LeanKernel, you can use this script to adjust its many parameters from the terminal. To access, type "lkflash" from the terminal emulator app and hit enter. Make sure you've typed "su" to be superuser first! The rest of the on-screen interface will be easy.
Franco also has adjustable kernel parameters via his market app. You can also read his kernel thread and see that there are many parameters you can adjust by manually writing them into an init.d script, but a tutorial on init.d scripting is outside the scope of this post.
Finally, if you're running a ROM like AOKP you can set some of the high-level kernel options in the Performance Settings menu: CPU governor, minimum clockspeed, maximum clockspeed and voltages.
I use AutoGuard (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard&hl=en).
Its set to record once the phone starts receiving power (which means the car is on). And I have it set to allocate 24 GB of the memory for video recordings and it just deletes the oldest video when it runs out of space and it takes videos in 15 minute intervals. So I get more or less 8-ish hours of driving.
I recommend buying Pro for the ability to record with the screen off. The GNex just burns up if its recording with the screen on. It runs cool otherwise.
Hi, everyone. I saw a lot of speculation being done with no hard evidence that can bring us any closer to understanding why some people can't shake the reboot ghost, so I decided to see if there is a common thread.
Whether or not you have a rebooting Nexus, please take this survey so we can establish some clear trends.
//EDIT: As we near 100 responses, some interesting trends are already emerging. ;)
//EDIT 2:
Okay, first interesting result thus far. I am not a statistician, so I will leave that to the professionals, but here are the numbers:
So far it seems that LTE users are more likely to suffer reboots and shutdowns than GSM users, but GSM users are not in the clear.
//EDIT 3:
If you are influential in a large news outlet or community (e.g. Android Police, Droid Life, XDA, RootzWiki) can you please post this on my behalf? Or tip the news staff?
//EDIT 4:
I don't know how messing with your DPI affected your root status, but if you aren't rooted then you will need to reroot. If you are in fact unrooted, check out the WugFresh Root Toolkit in the side bar. It seems to be the best way to do it.
You're on a Galaxy Nexus. Virtually every ROM is stable despite not every release being a 'milestone' release. As long as you make sure to wipe everything, you shouldn't have any issues on the latest release.
When you restore your apps with titanium backup, you have the option to restore all of your data along with your apps. As for your launcher, all of your shortcuts and folders should be there, but your widgets will need to be put back manually.
As for your actual installation steps:
Backup your apps with Titanium backup
Backup your messages with SMS Backup & Restore
Boot to recovery and make a nandroid backup
Do a factory reset, and then wipe dalvik cache
Install your ROM
Install GApps
Reboot phone
Install Titanium backup and restore your non-system apps. Restoring system apps can lead to trouble. Also, don't restore Google Wallet with Titanium backup, because apparently this can lead to problems.
Restore your text messages with SMS Backup & Restore
Reboot your phone
A thousand times, this ^ I/O is a month before Apple's WWDC, and with APPL's earnings plummeting this year I think we could see a new phone that's mean to let Glass really do its thing with a perfect partner phone
Titanium Backup PRO. It takes about ten minutes to restore my apps+data.
FWIW, I've been using redditisfun for over two years.. Sure i've tried some of the others, however, the latest version of RedditNews is AWESOME, especially if you hang out in the comments section a lot.
If for no other reason than it loads the link and comments at the same time. It makes it feel so much faster than browsing reddit on a pc or any other app for that matter.
I linked to the free version, but the paid version for $1.99 is the best $1.99 I've spent.
Hey man! You can go back to stock android, you just have to flash the stock image. No problem. If you want google apps you have to flash a gapps package. Google apps: http://paranoidandroid.co/gapps/ and stock: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakju It honestly is easier to just use a toolkit to go back to stock. Check the sidebar for the link to the XDA Galaxy nexus toolkit. EDIT: You can just flash the google images the same way you flashed CM. I recommend the newer version of CM11 actually. To get back to stock don't flash those images the same way.
Well, the "building" and assembly is likely done in samsung factories but the individual parts like chips and controllers are sourced from other suppliers. YOu can see what they specifically used in the teardown on ifixit...
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-Teardown/7182/1
That's pretty much exactly what it is. All the image files are displayed in a slideshow at the speeds specified in the .txt file.
EDIT: helpful guide
Actually people keep getting confused about this which is Google's fault but while there is a Google Voice (the VOIP service) the name of this feature is called Google Voice Input (which is the name of the Android Voice Input feature). Think of it with a break in the way you pronounce (Google, Voice Input or Google, Voice Recognition). So technically, Google Voice applies to both of the features unless you wanted to really make sure that the word input or recognition is included. You can read more about it here. Cheers.
EDIT: I see that Google Voice Actions is another term used as well for this more fleshed out feature. Basically the Voice Input is the physical capability of speaking in to the device while the Action component is the newer fleshed out application giving you results. Hopefully Google will figure out a more cohesive way to name these components instead of overlapping but IMO they kind of shot themselves in the foot with the way/names they rolled out from the get go. IMO Google Talk should be called Google Chat; Google Voice (VOIP) should be called Google Talk or Google Phone; and this feature should be called Google Voice. Thanks.
Not sure on an actual fix to this issue, but I recommend Tasker as a solution. I tend to fat-finger my volume buttons when grabbing my phone, so I made a Tasker profile to adjust media volume to a preset level when I plug in headphones. It also runs Winamp, waits 5 seconds (just incase my phone was sleeping, give it time to get Winamp running), then starts playing music*. I don't even need to press a button to start playing music in my car - I just plug it in.
*I actually have to use an app called Media Button Router to correctly send the play command to Winamp. The app specifically says it doesn't work with Winamp, but I believe that it only for Bluetooth commands - it sends Tasker's play command to Winamp without any fuss.
Not too sure, but I use a single button set of earbuds and customized what the button controls using JAYS Headset Control.
Works well for me, try it out if you can't find a better solution.
Installing Enhanced Email ($9.99) will allow you to ignore the pin unlock requirement. I don't think rooting is required, but since I am, I couldn't tell you.
It's a good app and you can get a demo from his site to check it out.
Guise, whats the difference between the official Samsung one, and this $54 one from Google? https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Desktop_Dock_with_Pogo_Pin?id=galaxy_nexus_hspa_pogo_desk_dock&feature=accessories#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDExMSwiZGV2aWNlLWdhbGF4eV9uZXh1c19oc3BhX3BvZ29fZGVza19kb2NrIl0.
If you're looking to log what you eat and maybe set a calorie budget and see how you stack up against it, MyFitnessPal is pretty good for that. Personally, I used it only for about a week and then gave up on calorie counting, but I was just playing around with it. It seemed to do a good job and had most pre-packaged foods already in the database. I believe it also has a way to track workouts, but I didn't try that part. It has a companion web site where you can enter/view stuff too, so you don't have to do it all on your phone if that's not always convenient.
As for exercise logs, Endomondo is supposed to be good for tracking running, walking, or cycling. I already have a Garmin GPS watch that I use for that (and I don't want to wreck my phone by sweating all over it or tripping and falling on it), but I have heard good things about Endomondo from people.
TogglePanel also gives you radio toggles from the dropdown menu.
No Root needed.
The SGS3. Amazon has it for $70, which Best Buy will price match if you'd rather buy it in person.
Yes, maybe you need this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount
As a side note, I was also able to connect my GoPro camera directly to the phone and be able to view the video files.
I've posted this before, but check out LCD Density Modder Pro. It installs a modified Market that spoofs your DPI so that there aren't any incompatibilities.
Just updated. Here's a screenshot.
~~not many options but neat upgrade.~~ Lots of features I just suck at exploring.
Edit: Actually biggest thing for me is the menu button. Missed this button. Last time I used it was on was my Optimus V with physical buttons.
I just found this. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.im.RemoDroid&feature=also_installed#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwNCwiZGUuaW0uUmVtb0Ryb2lkIl0.
I haven't tried it yet, but it sure blows Airdroid's glorified file browser out of the water.
Swiftkey X is a fantastic keyboard replacement. You'll be sold before the trial ends.
Badass Battery Monitor is helpful to find battery hogs.
>Turn on quick commands for the browser in settings.
This is true if you use the stock browser but I'd recommend using Chrome Beta
no free tether for VZW unlimited customers
EDIT: most ROMs have enabled the built in tether app without reporting to VZW, but they can still look at your packet information.
busted USB port, it's a very common/widespread problem. You can try nudging the little tab in the micro-usb port a little bit and see if that helps (make sure the phone is off).
You'll need to replace the port yourself here or send it into Samsung.
Most people opt to just fix it themselves for around $15. Samsung has denied any issues with the port and claims it as being water damaged and will charge you around $50~ to fix it.
This is where I found out about it.
I have the APK on my Dropbox, it's the same one from that link.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zhf8p40ubkq6ju8/Wallet_1.5-R79-v5.apk
[edit] Fixed the Droid-life link
The moment I got my Nexus I installed Nova on it and it has served me well, but Apex Launcer blows it away speed wise & has the same options only available for the paid Nova version.
So that's my preferred choice for now.
He's wrong. The Galaxy Nexus, for example, has a SiRFstarIV GSD4t GPS chip in it, at least according to ifixit.
Unless you want to re-root and unlock, you will have to flash the updated stock ROM anyway: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/update-galaxy-nexus-android-4-0-2-ics-without-loosing-root/. So far when I have flashed new ROMs, I have not lost any apps or data. This sounds like a win-win. New stock ROM, same data/apps, no need to root/unlock.
Edit: According to this discussion, the upgrade from froyo to gingerbread did not touch user apps or data. Hopefully also the case, so another possible solution to your question.
The most stock JB feel would be Bugless Beast (BB).
franco.Kernel Updater in the Play Store. It's $2.99 I think, but worth it. You get tons of options and the ability to get the latest version of his kernel right from his app. I think there is a free .apk on XDA-Developers.com for it though. Alternatively, there are many other apps, free and paid, in the store that will give you similar options. SetCPU is another good one. Here is the .apk for SetCPU. You'll need an account to download it. Just make sure you have "Unknown Sources" checked under Settings>Security.
EDIT: Just make sure that you don't have the clock settings set on boot until you make sure they're stable. Or else it could cause a bootloop.
Here are the mtpref files for those and the others that I used. You can just save them under the MinimalisticTextPreferences folder that is made and when you make a widget, choose to restore from file then choose the file of the widget you're trying to restore.
No.
I've never used a screen protector and I've never had a scratch on the screen itself, although, I'm very cautious with my toys. I used the nexus one for two years and I've grown to love the included pouch so much, I found a similar pouch on ebay for cheap. It's made for the galaxy s2 which is slightly smaller in height, so it sticks out a little on the top, but I'm fine with it. The screen will never get scratched in your pocket in a pouch unless it gets filled with grit/sand. The pouch also makes a great cushion for laying your phone on if you want to rest it on a table. I think the screen looks and feels so much better without a protector, but of course there is always the risk of something going wrong. I'm willing to take that risk because I'm just crazy like that.
For the curious, I bought a pouch like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Android-Pouch-Case-Samsung-Galaxy-S2-i9100-/270882306995?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f11d7fbb3#ht_2170wt_772
To find and remove duplicates log on to https://www.google.com/contacts_v2/#contacts on a pc, hit menu, then 'find and merge duplicates'. These changes will sync back to the phone.
ICS no longer syncs from Facebook. You can turn off Twitter contact sync in the settings menu, under accounts and syncing.
plus one for haxsync (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mots.haxsync&hl=en). works perfectly. lame that $.99 needs to be spent for a feature like this, but cant blame the app for that as the app does EXACTLY what is intended.
hey I just downloaded your other game today, Tank Hero. It was fun! I'll give this a shot.
edit: just tried the split screen. it's fun as hell! A bit tight, depending on your finger size, but manageable. I second exor674's suggestion of dimming the soft buttons.
edit2: if you look at the official TED app, it not only dims the soft buttons, it hides it if you play the full screen video. You guys should definitely look into doing that.
I had a similar problem, but it turned out vibration was turned off in a non-intuitive way. Try installing this app. Open it, hit the menu dots then 'vibrate settings.' Make sure 'vibrate whenever possible' is selected for each. Hopefully this will fix it, if not I'm sure smarter people than I will step in and help :)
You can use Secure Settings to do this if you're still having trouble. It's a free plugin on the market.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.intangibleobject.securesettings.plugin
After installing it, you can access it through the "Locale Plugin" option.
Full disclosure: I'm the developer.
I don't remember the source because I downloaded a ton of icons to decide which is better... So... Sorry source!
But here they are, I uploaded them for you: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dllkdas2x0ip9wk/lines_white.zip
You do indeed lose everything when you initially root your Nexus. There's not much you can do about it besides backing up everything you can through you Google Account (contacts, pictures, apps).
Once you do root (and depending on whether or not you will be flasing ROMs), you'll want to use Titanium Backup to back up your apps and settings. Here's a tutorial for TB.
That is Kaloer Clock - Night Clock I have it set up using Llama to only launch while I am connected with wifi at work and docked. Then in the program I have it set to close the application once the phone is undocked. It works out very well. The app launches when docked in this dock at work and doesn't launch when I am at home charging overnight.
I forget what the default skin is, but if is not selected you can change the skin in Settings>Behavior and layout>Layout>Skin>Weather
Usually if you don't have a tether plan you cannot tether (unless your rooted). This app can wifi tether without root or a tether plan. Hope this helps
And if you get the LeanKernelTweaks kernel you can download a terminal application and type in "su" then type in "lt" and it will give you so many more options to enable fast charging, zram, sound boosts, etc. Just follow the on screen instructions :)
Nope. I have my phone as a desk clock every night using this app, set to red text, black background, minimum brightness, and dimmed in-app. No issues, no burn-in (on my Toro, Supersonic, or E4GT), and no problems. Phone charges just fine, and sometimes I'll have SKY.FM playing on the Relaxation channel just for some noise when I'm not running a fan in my room.
Flashing AOKP will not magically fix your battery woes. The kernel plays a big part in this, but even the kernel cannot fix wakelocks caused by apps or other services running on your device.
Install the following apps and monitor your "Deep Sleep" and wakelocks! This will help you pin down apps that may be causing the poor battery life.
Ok, what I did: I installed the official cm12.1, used f2fs for data and cache and overclocked the gpu to 512 MHz with https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=kernel&fdid=com.grarak.kerneladiutor.
Works relatively smooth :)
It's a fairly simple process, just make sure you have the right tools! http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairing-Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-Verizon-LTE-Micro-USB-Charge-Port-Main-Mic/9641/1%3Cbr%20/%3E%3Cbr%20/%3EH
Animations are under the Developer Options section in Settings. If you don't have Developer Options, then you must first open Settings, scroll down to open About Phone, then tap the build number several times until you see a popup. Now you should have Developer Options.
To get native videos working (native saves a lot of power) you need .3gp. it's basically an h264/mp4 encoded file.
for encoding go get handbrake, (http://handbrake.fr/) here are the settings for older android devices, (lower res, smaller files) you can fiddle or find newer setups (or use something like dvd catalyst) https://sites.google.com/site/bmaupinwiki/home/applications/multimedia/handbrake-android-settings
I think the automatic restore will only start if you flash Gapps in CWM recovery right after flashing the new rom, without booting your phone in between.
Or you can use AppExtractor to restore all your apps from a Nandroid backup (also all SMS/MMS, contacts, bookmarks, bluetooth, and wifi connections). The paid version's a few bucks and lets you restore more than 5 at a time.
In fact I usually purposely flash Gapps separately, as AppExtractor is much faster than having to re-download every app, and restores all your APK data.
Dock Nothingness will work.
When you install it, since its dock activated, you will be asked which app you want to use, just set Dock Nothingness as the default action and you never have to mess with it again.
I used it on my ogdroid cause I hated the car dock home screen..
[edit] these are horrible articles. For instance, the LTE Tear down says it has an 8MP camera.
adb needs root, your phone doesn't. Lemme think... the fastest way to let adb run in root mode is to boot up ClockWorkMod. Download version 5.5.0.2 and put it in the same directory you're running adb from.
>(adb reboot bootloader)
>fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.2-maguro.img
Now don't do anything on your phone, just run the adb command from earlier again.
>adb push Update.zip /cache
I got it from ebay for US$280 the seller was "forceviewer_evo". It was the best price I could find at the time. It arrived pretty quickly along with a set of tools for doing the replacement, the packaging looked like it had been run over by an angry truck, but the screen was snug inside several layers of bubble wrap. The actual process of replacement I'd followed was from ifixit.com LINK very handy, but if you're doing it, be VERY careful to unstick the volume and power buttons from the chassis before you take the digitizer off, those flex cables are very weak.
I've also ordered a replacement volume button from TVC-mall, so i'll see how that goes when i replace it.
Hope that helps.
If you had windows 7 there is a programming called connectify which can do what you want.
For more details see www.connectify.me or http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/connectify-convert-windows-7-into-virtual-wifi-router/
If you're on verizon, you probably won't be able to get wifi tether from the market (at least I couldn't). But it's also here. This one requires root.
You might also check out EasyTether or PDANet.
Another suggestion: CWM Touch Recovery is significantly easier to use. Aside from that, these instructions seem reasonably similar to what I did a few months ago.
I'm sorry you had some hiccups. Good luck tomorrow!
Yeah, they're the exact same as the ones in the phone. Samsung labeled. Here's the ebay link that I got them from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/380394395206?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
Fuck, I really want a desktop dock badly but I'm not willing to pay $65 for it. I'd rather just pay for the cheap ass $15 on eBay.
$30 is about the max I'd pay for a dock without speakers and such.. OEM or not.
In fact has anyone tested one like this off ebay? It looks sort of solid but I can't tell how much it weighs. I'd be in fear of using it in the dock and having it tip over or something because the dock weighs nothing.
After about two weeks of use I noticed this issue. I had unlocked it right after I got it.
I have now ordered a new USB connector board to see if that fixes it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150713366355
http://www.ebay.com/itm/260913751912
I've had this in my watch list for a while but I hadn't decided on it. One it looks flimsy in comparison to the one you linked, less support for the phone, seems like it may stress the power connector a bit.
I also wasnt sure if it would support the extended battery and I would kind of rather have one in landscape mode myself.
If I recall correctly, the Galaxy Nexus does have reinforced glass but does not have Corning's Gorilla Glass.
EDIT: Source
Droid X: Single core 1 GHz, 512 MB RAM
GN: Dual core 1.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM
Games and videos and everything else work better on my GN than on my X. I find it nearly impossible to believe it's a hardware issue caused by the increased resolution/screen size.
Looks like this may be a bug from honeycomb that carrier over?
Well I've just been playing with ParanoidAndroid today, and I think the solution closest to that would be if PA adds the option to change the soft keys like AOKP does, or CM9 adds it and PA builds it in then.
Then you could remove the recent apps button which I never use (you can still access it by setting long-press home to open recent apps), and then have more room for home to be in the middle(ish) and keep the tablet clock/status where recent apps would be.
Or to get closer to what you want you could have a fourth key open the "notification tray" which I believe you can do in AOKP now, but then somehow "hide" the clock and status icons. But that would require a lot of modding and i'm not sure if you can bring back the top status bar while keeping the tray. It might be something the PA guy might be interested in, in the pursuit of true hybrid mode. But I don't know how much modding that would take.
TL;DR: It's not a mod I've seen anywhere and I'm pretty sure it's unlikely to happen unless you figure it out or request it and they like the idea, but i'd say best option is to request/wait for changing the soft keys around in CM9 and then make some more room down there by taking out recent apps.
edit:
This is what I've been playing with, moving the nav buttons around, I don't know if anything like that would be close enough, but anything more would be a substantial mod.
I'm thinking of buying the Samsung Galaxy S II Adapter from eBay.
Yes, that. The animation is OS but I use my launcher gestures. launcher>Gestures>Launch app>Pinch in>Screen off and lock.
Can you not merge all of your contacts on the phone with the Google contacts so that they are saved and stored? None of my contacts are saved on my phone for this exact reason.
Here's an app that can help with that
EDIT: Woops. Misread "contents" as "contacts." Ignore me. Brain-fart. Though DropBox, Google Drive, etc. are all great for storing phone data without a USB cable.
For #2: The update to 4.0.4 should take care of that (it did for me). Did you receive it yet? You can check by going to Settings>About Phone>Android Version
For #1: I have "ToggleSwitch" widget which has an ICS style and allows for 4 levels of brightness. I recommend it. Play Store Link or Screenshot from my device. Bonus: The widget has a wi-fi tether button which bypasses Verizons $10/mo charge and works great! Creates a hotspot for your laptop to log in to and browse/download at 4G speeds.
And #3: Yes it is an "Options Overflow" button as quackattack mentioned as well.
I had the same question the last time the 4.0.4 update was supposedesly available. Someone linked to this app: Voodoo OTA RootKeeper which is supposed to keep your phone rooted when taking an OTA update.
I don't know if it works or not, since this will be the first OTA update I've taken with this phone.
Wallpaper is Mystic Halo
Stock CM9 Launcher, so I've done nothing with the icons on this phone.
Minimalistic Text:
If you get a voip address, such as ipkall etc and use google voice, phone is covered.
For text, there's always google voice.
And then If you ever want a plan, T-Mobile have a $30 unlimited 3g plan with 100min.
Anyway, Yeah, using your phone for a desktop works quite awesome! I've tried it before. The only drawback though, you can't watch netflix while browsing websites. But that's all ^^
Oh and SuperVideo does help a bit.
Without rooting, I know Nova Launcher can enable that setting no problem. A great ICS launcher if you haven't/don't want to root.
I have it set to block apps from access the network unless I explicitly allow them. It's a bit of a hassle when you download a new app that needs network access because you need to go into Droidwall and allow it, but I still prefer that level of control.
You can also control whether apps are allowed to access 3G and/or Wifi.
I've used ClockworkMod Tether successfully with Verizon. It doesn't support Wifi tethering, but it seems to work pretty well over USB. Doesn't even require root.
I'll answer the second question first. AOKP already is 4.0.4, so it will already have all the OS updates that the OTA update would have. You also need to flash the radios to get those. That being said I'm fairly certain that the OTA update will just check to see what version of Android you have, so since AOKP says 4.0.4 nothing will happen. The update shouldn't touch the kernel so I don't think there will be anything there.
As for keeping all your data and settings, there are two methods. One the backup which I have there will backup your music, apps, app settings, and most all your data. The ONLY things I found that were missing afterward were some google apps (GMail, Map, Music, and probably few others like those), all my 3rd party apps were fine. You can also download Titanium Backup which will backup EVERYTHING for you. Oh and your homescreens will be cleared.
I use the Samsung dock in my car but use the Exogear in my wife's car. The Exogear is excellent but it's a bit shaky over rough roads. The Samsung dock is a pain-in-the-ass to use but the one thing it has going for it is a solid grip on the phone.
I pre-ordered one, but kind of afraid of cracking the corning-glass screen like Gizmodo did. The protective case wasn't available to order with it, unfortunately, but it's pretty blah.
I'm going to name mine Deckard. If he was made to retire Nexus 6s, than surely he is a Nexus 7.
