This is by no means a comprehensive list so others please add your own.
PM me if you have questions about any of it. I don't know as much a s a lot of posters in [/r/Android](/r/Android) but I'm happy to help if I can.
Edit: Oi, how could I forget bloatware removal?
You should have gotten the Alien Blue HD app instead. When you search in the store, it lists iPad apps and iPhone apps separately. You can see this at the top left corner on the groups in the search page.
I use http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ for tethering on my Android phone. Granted, you must have root access.
If you don't want to go all-in with custom roms and such, there are apps out there that may or may not work with your phone on your carrier, but the free ones all require that your phone be rooted. Check out Wifi Tether or Barnacle.
By far the best, if you have root (you do, right?)
Just sideload it. The 2.0.7 version supports Bluetooth tethering, which is really fantastic and convenient.
Android wifi tether if your phone supports it; Barnacle if it doesn't.
I run ViperRez. It's based on Sense 4.0. Not much to say, it works great. For tethering, download WiFi Tether 3.2-pre1. Since you're on the OTA release, you're probably S-ON still. You'll need to manually flash the kernel.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
I have been using that on each of my Android phones that I've had since 2010. Never had an issue with AT&T catching on. I also don't go insane when I tether. I usually use it for vpn+ssh to fix servers or very light web surfing.
AT&T will not let you install wireless tether for root users. They have blocked it. It is not your specific phones fault, just your carriers. You can side load the app found here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_8-pre1.apk&can=2&q=
Perfectly valid reason. My advice would be to use a better WIFI Tether software, though.
Edit: Seems that open garden is more than a WIFI Tether software, it has mesh networking software. Seems that GPS would be pretty necessary for such a software? If you're not using the mesh networking part, might I suggest Barnacle or Wifi Tether.
if anyone down there has an android phone, you can put wifitether on it if its rooted
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
then you can have a roaming wifi hotspot from your cell phone as long as your battery lasts
It's a crap shoot. There have been reports of people getting caught or not getting caught. 5.7 gigs in reality isn't that much, just say you were listening to Google Music or something.
Also, what tethering program? I have heard good things about Wired Tether and Wireless Tether (I have used them), and my friend at Lifehacker swears by PDA Net
All that being said, technically it's breaking contract (at least it used to be on blackberry's) so don't say you haven't been warned. Although Verizon is good about letting you know before they kill you.
Try this bud: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ nothing can be done about no root. :/
If you need help rooting let me know. :D
EDIT: Nothing can be done about rooting and using wireless tether as far as I know i've not seen this done for a very very long time. Usually people do it via wireless-for-root or if they are running CM7 it has a built in feature which (At least it hasn't for me on AT&T) set off any alarms. It's right in the settings.
You can use wireless tether for root. No ad-hoc needed. It acts like a hot spot (fully supporting infrastructure mode) so your nook color will see a regular connection with a wpa2 key.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=Generic http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/06/11/free-android-wifi-tether-for-root-users-app-now-supports-wpa2-and-full-hotspot-infrastructure-capabilities-on-evo-4g/
I'm not familiar with your phone, but if you manage to get root you may want to take a look into wifi tether ( http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/). Not sure which devices it woks on, but it has worked on all 3 devices that I've tried.
Wifi tether will not work on my or my wife's S3. We are rooted and running scrosler's CleanRom for the debloat. When I start wireless tether regardless of the device profile (tried auto, S3, GNex CDMA/LTE with reboot in between the switch) the wireless network does not show on any devices.
I have not tried another rom, and I know that might help. Before I go about that, has anyone encountered this issue and been able to solve it to get tether working? I am leaving to France in 4 days and need to be able to tether for a presentation I will be giving :)
Damn! Are you using an Android device, is it rooted, and if so, are you using native wifi tethering or this one: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Might be able to get the longer name out of app.
If you're on verizon, you probably won't be able to get wifi tether from the market (at least I couldn't). But it's also here. This one requires root.
You might also check out EasyTether or PDANet.
No, no, what I mean is that there should be a built in wifi hotspot feature in the ROM. You should be able to find it in your settings somewhere. Something like settings, tether mobile hotspot, turn on.
If that doesn't work, try some of the beta wireless tether apps.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/SupportedHardware
The tether option is built into the phone. The app is something you can install if you've rooted your phone.
Kies Air however is a Samsung product and will allow you to connect to your phone wirelessly to transfer files and data but not use to connect to the internet via the phone.
I apologize if I've repeated any information you're not already aware of.
Not sure, but didn't CyanogenMod have tethering built in? If so, it would probably be in the source code of that if you want to do a little digging.
EDIT: Hmm, couldnt find anything there, but did find this which may have some clues in the source code.
The WiFi on my college campus can be spotty sometimes. I was chilling in a lounge reading a book when I overheard a girl on the phone with the help desk angrily complaining that the WiFi had gone down again and that she really really really needed to submit a paper through Blackboard before the upcoming deadline.
Whipped out my Motorola Droid, fired up android-wifi-tether, bam, instant internet access.
When android.git.kernel.org is up again you might be able to find how the internal apps to do it and make an app for it: Link
This looks promising also (mostly just because it is being run from the shell, but I understand this is a slightly different app..) http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=411
Hope that can help somewhat, sounds like a frustrating problem to have :(
The apk link from that article is 404, so I googled the file name it was supposed to be looking for, and found this page.
Looks like someone is hard at work on this. Unfortunately for my Liberty GB, I can't get the SSID to show up on any other computers. I guess I'll keep watching for it!
Have tried
wifi_tether_v3_1-beta6.apk
wifi_tether_v3_1-beta1.apk
no it WAS a free app on the android market for rooted devices only. however after putting a custom ROM on my phone i went looking for it again in the market and it was gone. this does not surprise me though as verizon and AT&T are having fits over this so called "illegal Tethering." lucky for me i backed it up to TiBu so i still have it. it does not charge for anything and i have no idea about SSL but if you give me a way to test it i can check for you.
edit: definitely not on the market anymore but found it here
I actually went through a slightly lengthy, but totally worth it process to help my dad out with his Droid X. I'd rooted it for him with the simple use of Z4, but when the OTA Gingerbread update hit, it absolutely screwed everything. Superuser was stuck, and it was basically a mess. Here's what I did to fix everything:
That should do it!
No, Sprint everything data plan. Only thing they have done that annoys me is the sprint myfi hotspot, which they want another 30 bucks a month for, is locked down on the phone. I already pay an extra 10 for the smart phone (which is fine) but if someone should I don't know say root the phone there is this handy app http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
I hear it works great.
Only not available for AT&T or Verizon users if you use the Market. You can install the apk pretty easily; you can get it here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Requires root, naturally.
I have a DroidX and love it as well. I haven't really dove into unlocking it yet, but I'm temprooting it with Visionary and tethering with android-wifi-tether and it couldn't be easier. Even supports WPA2/PSK. I played TF2 over my phone last nite!
EDIT: I would recommend a fan or some other way to keep the phone cool while running wireless tether.
This might be of interest, but does require a rooted device.
Also - depending on the cell service provider - Android 2.2 has native tethering support.
Also look at this comment thread under the issues section..
It mentions something about the 'hide SSID' option only working with specific chipsets... and which version it was removed from...
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=16
I've recently gone through a lot of wifi tethering apps trying to get it working on a co-workers phone. Hiding the SSID didn't seem to be an option in any of them..
However this might be what you want. I haven't tried it, but the image does show 'hide SSID' as an option.
Here's the Google Play link
I don't know that it is optional, I flashed the JB boot loaderbefore I flashed the ROM. It may work with the ICS bootloader, but I can't think of any reason not to use the one for JB.
I tether with the Wireless Tether app because I don't want to risk VZW somehow charging me for using the native tether options. Though I rarely use it, it is nice to have.
Thanks for the information. I was able to make it home and root my phone. I tried using FoxFi both before and after root, and FoxFi didn't work either. The only way for me to get wifi tether was to root and install the apk from here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
For those looking to root their Sprint GN, I used the tool kit from this thread and it worked like a charm:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
There you go. Root is required. It's not on the market so you have to download the apk there. It's its own tethering app so it doesn't use the native Android tethering but it gets around having to pay your carrier for a tether plan.
I'm on a Thunderbolt as well running CM7. I noticed that the latest Wifi-tether app at http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ didn't work for me but an earlier version (2.0.8-pre1) did work. The only issue is having to change the SSID everytime I use it, but thats not really to much of a hassle.
I think zimm3rmann is referring to using your phone as your wifi. I use wireless tether for my wifi sometimes. I installed super one click and then installed wireless tether using app installer. Might work for you if you're ever in a situation when you need wifi and don't have it. :)
Here is a direct link to WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-beta9. (the latest non-experimental) The one from the market is outdated.
This is not an ad-hoc network and will work for connecting to other Android devices like tablets.
Thats terrible :(
I would try some of these then if no other apps on the market are working for you:
Beta versions (and past versions)
Good luck!
I just checked to make sure mine still worked. All is well. I'm using android-wifi-tether version 3.1-beta6. The Photon does not have the netfilter kernel module, so access control probably won't work no matter which tethering app you use. android-wifi-tether will give a warning about it on start-up, but all other features seem to work fine.
I use this version on my Incredible and it works fine.
Did you go into Menu -> Settings and set the encryption, SSID, etc?
EDIT: The latest version is available here.
Look for an app on the market to check if you really have root.
Barnacle should do it but I have not used it before. I use Wifi Tether..
Either should work.
One thing is it will show up as an adhoc network.. so if you are looking for the wifi hotspots from a honeycomb tablet it won't show up without rooting the tablet and enabling adhoc networks.
Good luck.
Are you asking if Android devices can be jailbroken? They can be rooted, which is almost the same thing, in that it gives you full control over your device right down to the "root" of the internal filesystem. With these privileges you can install apps that have enhanced features that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
Examples:
Cincinnati Bell has the Nexus S?
From what I understand you're using the built in wireless tether app right? Have you tried the other Wireless Tether app? It should be on the Market. If you can't find it there go to the Google Code site here.
I use this app with no problem on Verizon for my tethering. You will need to be rooted, but shouldn't that big of an issue. If that doesn't work, you may be SOL as far as an easy method is concerned.
BTW, Bluetooth tethering is much friendlier on the battery compared to setting up a wi-fi hotspot, I can leave my Nexus one tethering my ASUS transformer all day without noticeable additional drain (save the increased 3g usage)
Though it's not included in Android by default so you'd need to root and use http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Did you install the latest beta version of wifi tether? If so, you can go in the settings and play with the device profiles. Setting my DX to use the Droid2 profile worked for me.
I'm currently running CM7 Nightly 87 with Dalingrin's 5/23/11 1.2 OC Kernel. Wireless tether your NookColor to your phone. Use SyncSMS to receive/send texts on your tablet.
I just want wifi-tether to work. I need my phone as a modem this summer, and I cant afford another $20-40 a month for VZW Bullshit Fee.
On froyo, it works, on GB (959) it only redirected me to vzw "buy the data package" until I sbf'd back to froyo.
This has nothing to do with Verizon's blocking of tethering apps from the Android Market. Make sure you're not trying to run the tethering 'app' from the MIUI settings menu, because the MIUI rom doesn't and will not support tethering on the D1. Instead you need to download android wifi tether and sideload it.
I have a Nexus S purchased from the US T-Mobile running on a foreign network in New Zealand. They're all unlocked out of the box - mine shows up as a 2Degrees Nexus S in the browser-based market. Can you just take your SIM card out, or find a foreign one somewhere?
Or just sideload it from here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Careful Ohyayer, you have an Incredible like me. I found that with Cyanogen CM7, using WiFi tether (which I prefer as noted previously for the MAC address filtering), doesn't mix well with Cyanogen's built in one (really it's Google's built in one that carriers removed so they could charge for this service).
When you load this app, if you say "GO WIFI TETHER" you'll see it's icon in notification tray start as well as the Cyanogen (stock android) one. It never seems to actually work for me.
I will see it start, devices can even see it and try to connect, however with MAC address filtering my phone should vibrate and let me accept them (UAC Control). With stock sense ROM we get it has always worked perfectly. It remembers that MAC so from then on out you never have to allow that specific device. With CM7 it doesn't seem to do anything.
I have had better luck by not installing it, and using just the one built-in with Cyanogen with a WPA2 code. Just keep that in mind when testing.
Also, the one on the Android Market has worked less often for me. I actually keep the .apk of the one that has worked best for me, as the maker didn't used to put it on the market and uses a code.google.com site to publish the app and its versions for people.
The one I like most is 2.0.2-pre14 and 2.0.6 http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I like this app more than the others because 1. it allows MAC address filtering 2. It shows me the band up/down I've used while tethered 3. It shows a temperature gauge.
The Temp gauge is nice as if I'm riding in the car for a long trip and use it for an hour, the NIC gets HOT. I'm talking it goes from 26C to 42C hot. So I'll just put it in front of the AC vent to cool it down as to not overheat my device. When back to 26C, not care for another hour or so.
You have to root the mytough4g, which will then let you install the wifi hotspot app.
Here is how you root it: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=TMobile_myTouch_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
And once you do that, here is a link to wifi hotspot app: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
This is a free wireless tether. However since you are on AT&T you will be caught no matter what you use, however this is the one I use and I have been for over 8 months now on Verizon with no problems.
Sorry I wasn't very clear in my original post.
I have the original Motorola Droid with Android 2.2.1 FRG83D installed and rooted. On this page (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) under the device column, it lists Motorola Droid/Milestone as a compatible device, but then in the Android Version column it says 2.0.
My confusion is, does that mean the application requires my Droid to be running Android 2.0 or does that mean it at the least it needs Android 2.0?
I found Barnacle to be unreliable and buggy.
I'd recommend the original and the best open source tethering app: http://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether
Project site: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
