Being you use public wifi I would recommend getting a VPN. They don't cost much and it will help protect your personal info. Private Internet Access works well and is cheap with many locations to pick from. You might also look at getting an outdoor wifi antenna and mount it to above the cab for better reception. Another idea would be to find a mount that you can swing the monitor to the sleeper or to the desk off a single point. They do make clamp only mounts that might work for you setup.
I dont use a microwave but an aroma egg shaped rice cooker
I buy broths, fresh veggies, spices and meats and make stews and soups. You can also do that with a slow cooker or crock pot if you dont want to spend the money on the rice cooker.
Also I have an electric skillet. I fry up burgers, pork chops etc occasionally. Not too often because that often leaves truck smelling like cooked meat for 3 days afterwards.
I fry up a couple pounds of bacon at home and put them in ziploc then the fridge. Then I buy half a dozen eggs and get a small 1 or 2 cup Tupperware container. Scramble a couple eggs and salt/pepper and maybe a slice of provolone. Nuke it for a couple minutes with a slice or 2 of bacon. Makes tasty quick breakfast.
Jerkey is a bit cheaper in Walmarts compared to truckstops. Also, pepperoni and cheese cubes make an awesome snack when you don't have time to cook.
You can still love your job, but you may have to love your job with another company or with your own rig. If they're treating you like shit just be sure to document everything. EVERYTHING. I suggest you get a call recording app as well. I use ACR and it actually saved my ass on Monday when a repo company called my boss and outright lied about my phone interactions with them. NY is a single party consent state, and FWIK in a 30 second google search it's the same in Canada. That means as long as you know that you are recording the call then you don't have to tell them that they are on a recorded line. Best $3 I ever spent.
Stay strong. The world is full of assholes.
I must be. There was that. Officer claimed I wasn’t wearing a seat belt because a shoulder pad obscured his view of it. He also came into my lane and forced me on the shoulder and got me for failure to maintain lane.
Got ticketed because I was riding the white line.
Got another ticket when I “illegally” crossed the road from the TA in Wildwood, Fl to the SB entrance of I-75 even though it was 0200 and nobody was on the road. The cop was hidden. He said I needed to cross one lane at a time.
Then again in Georgia for not having both hands on the wheel because I was playing with a fidget cube even though my hand was not in view. So I no longer take one hand off the steering wheel except to change the radio and take a drink.
Had the cops called on me in Athens, GA a month ago because I hit one truck while backing into a dock (my fault, I’ll own up to that) and a second driver claimed I nailed the center of his front bumper. The cop said the cards are against me on that one and he took the driver’s word and cited me for that incident as well.
Most recently because I was driving 58 in a 55 in Indianapolis.
And the one from this morning.
That’s been since February. No more than 6 months worth of tickets.
Sir, may I introduce you to the Hot Logic Mini. For a mere 40 dollars you can now warm all of your food in your truck. They have both a 12v and 120v model (which is what I use with an inverter.) I usually just take leftovers with me, but it also will cook up those frozen meal sorts of things in about 2 hours. For the winter months when I want soup or chili I use the Crock Pot Lunch Crock. Hot Logic LunchCrock
It's a 4 camera system, they have them pointing forward and backward on both mirrors. It's ok, but cheap chinese stuff. Need to use their free shitty software to view the videos and convert them to avi for further editing.
I have an A119 in the truck and every car I own. $90 on Amazon. It's nice and slim and works without any issues. I leave it on 24/7, it has motion detection so it won't record if nothing is moving for hours.
Make sure your get a high endurance card, not just an SD card. Most of the time it's actually the card that craps out, not the camera.

81 quart cooler/freezer it has two compartments I run one for freezer and one for fridge. I buy the healthy brands of prepared meals from Walmart and can fit a weeks worth at a time. Used it all summer and it has held temp very well. They have different sizes and a 3 year warranty. Here's a link to mine should be able to find others from here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NJQZDFQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_C086TGJFXJXXM076JN2Y?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Pretty much any BPA free silicone cup works, these come in two shapes, plus spares so you don't have to wash daily if you can't find a sink. Or make a bunch of eggs, that also works. You can find these things at Walmart too out on the road, little less variety but easy access.
We have a lot of silicone stuff around the house, my sister got hella into the whole silicone baking supplies phase and it's actually good shit. Some of the things we've had for years and no rips, melts, nothing.
Your GPS is only as good as the person who programmed it.
If you don't have one of these you need to ask about it. It's a recall so your heater won't roast you.
If you have the freedom HF inverter, get ya one of these and an extension cord. It will not only power your 110V, but also charge up your batteries. Great for a 40hr break with no autostart, or to keep the fridge cold when your home. The little cable is because the truck has a 110V 40amp plug and most outlets are 110V 20amp. Never had any issues with using 20 amp circuits. A second extension for the block heater isn't a bad idea.
If it's used, ask them when the last time the screen in the bunk heater had been replaced. Mine is right at a year, and it was clogged.
Keep an eyebon the autostart, a small generator with battery charging leads might be useful. The autostart has been the name of my existence.
If it's auto, shift into drive and pull forward slightly if you can. Maybe just a quirk of mine, but it just got back from peterbilt for transmission issues and it seemed to really fuck up after backing into a spot at the truck stop and not pulling forward. It just thinks it's not in neutral, then it freaks out.
If it's new, make sure your fifth wheel locks easily and securely. Some of the petes we've gotten in 2020 were so bad they started harvesting fifth wheels from the outgoing internationals. Mine dropped trailers and didn't lock correctly until the dealership worked on it.
If I think of anything else I had to deal with, I'll try to update this post.
Get it cheaper on Amazon without the weeks of waiting.
If you want weather for trip planning one of the most helpful was paying for the feature on Garmin and with one button it will show you the weather hour by hour along your route. And one of the best weather apps is dark sky it's got a simple forcast and also more info if you want it like radar.

If you have a ps4 controller there is DS4Windows. I found this thread for using DS3 controllers
I went ahead and bought the expensive one here
But you can get cheaper ones. I use this one because I use it mostly at night and it has good IR night vision.
Get a 12v rice cooker. I recently switched from this big bulky one to a little 12v cooker. Loving it.
I'd get this very useful, hooks up to the trailer brake air to inflate tires. One of those things you wouldn't think to buy on your own but can make your life 100x easier when you need it. https://www.amazon.com/Plews-Edelmann-574-50gh-Inflator-Equipped/dp/B001JT1JZG/
Almost all semi’s already have triangles. If you don’t, ya just get em. It’s a federal requirement to have them.
The jumper cables are pretty useless. Rarely do you see one truck jumping another unless it’s at a company’s parking lot, and the cables will be on site.
The air compressor will be useless. Our tires run 100-120 PSI. That thing will put out 50
PSI on a good day and take fifteen minutes doing it- besides not reaching any tire on the truck or trailer.
Good suggestion for a gift is a pocket knife, a flashlight, a 3 pack of leather gloves (like you may find at a home improvement store) maybe a nice insulated water jug.
Subway gift cards are a lazy but good alternative.
Other thoughts- a long charger cable for their phone. An air gun kit. Some nice full bed sheets (some guys get the custom sheets, I’ve been using full for a while and they fit well.) disposable flossers. A couple of pillows? An entire box of grocery bags from a big box store for garbage bags? I’m just looking around the truck at this point.
Oh! And ya really wanna make the dudes day? Get him one of these I’ve had that exact headset for six years. I’ve been driving ten. That thing. Oh god. It’s actively dying after almost seven years. I have thousands-THOUSANDS of hours on it. I will absolutely be buying the same exact thing. Probably in another year lol. (Actually mine is the one with the single pin charging plug but still.)
Yes it's a google photos album. I to tired tonight to move them all to imgur.
Lol I'll help you out man
Here's how I do it.
Speedify program I use SPECIFICALLY for channel bonding. Though it forces you to use VPN. Not that it bothers me cause I can get behind locked sites. Plus the VPN speeds are pretty Decent and camera long way.
Buy 1-2 extra wifi dongles and install on your PC.
Connect to 2-3 different internet WiFi's and speedify will bond them together into 1 channel for, actually, very impressive speeds. For example.
Pilot/loves wifi + McDonald's wifi + whatever other wifi around like so cafe place that my wifi picks up.
Plus I always shoot for parking at my terminal whenever I can for laundry or whatever cause nothing beats my terminal internet.
Overall, It does good for elite dangerous. And decent on playing destiny. I don't pvp, not a pvp guy
Was just about to recommend that. Only about 120 bucks and the night sensor is pretty good along with picture quality
For a semi? Easiest thing is to buy a multicam system and mount the cameras on your side mirrors. https://i.imgur.com/j5x3cQy.jpg
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CGK6B52/
Alternatively, cameras inside the truck pointing at your mirrors.

Have been using this Bluetooth set for legit 2 yers. 0 problems!
1500 watts is about right, if you don't run everything all at the same time. The microwave is the large draw. Look for a 800 or 900 watt microwave. That can run with the fridge. Turn off the Play Station and tv when you cook. The tv and Play Station will be ok with the fridge. If you do trip the breaker while cooking, get an outlet switch for the fridge. Turn it off for a few minutes while you're cooking.
I have the gray and white coleman cooler from Love's. I've had it running constantly for about 7 months without issue.
I just bought an Alpicool 2-3 weeks ago. It is really nice. It is much more expensive than the Coleman cooler, but it has a compressor and programmable temperature down to -4F. They sell them in several different sizes. It feels very well made, I got the 55 liter version and used a strap to secure it in the passenger seat.
It's a 4 camera system, have them pointing forward and backward on both mirrors. It's ok, but cheap chinese stuff. Need to use their free shitty software to view the videos and convert them to avi for further editing.
Try librivox.org it's free no strings . They have a library to download from via search. Kinda like Gutenberg but audio rather then text. Been using them long time.

Been driving for 2 years and recently forgot how to back... Played this game and figured it out again, could be good practice to help you understand how the truck moves.

I'll agree with u/ShoreCircuit. You do want a pure sine wave inverter. And the Xantex is probably the best. Mine died and Xantrex 1800 Prosaid my $400 inverter was too cheap and lowend to be worth repairing (WTF?). So I bought this 3500 watt pure sine wave, peak 7k watt for the same price. Not problems yet.
3500k is overkill. But I run my CPAP, microwave, TV, PC and chargers off of it. Turn everything off and I can run a vacuum cleaner or tools.
Regarding ditching the aluminum can - I wonder if you could snip the handle off something like this and then stick it in the air fryer.
Yeah it's a Rove on Amazon. It's like $120.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074JT3698/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_2F290NKNNX3BQF2WDQVF
It has speed tracking abilities but I turned that off because it might hurt more than help.
I use this one.
Pretty easy to hard wire and mount to the rear fuse box so its always handy and always charged.
Just get a dishwashing container that folds up when you're not using it (like you would use for camping) and some dish soap like a normal person.
I use one just like this and I like it a lot.
I bought this for my 15 year old lab. Took her some getting used to but pretty effective if she goes straight up and you hold it for stability.

I do a lot of dockside breakdowns, and these are the best pair of gloves I've used so far.
Thick enough to not fall apart, but thin enough on the index finger to use my scanner. Doesn't work with my phone however.
As far as when I'm picking up, or dropping a trailer I've been using the same ole nasty yellow pair of work gloves for a few years.
I got a nice pair of Redwing boots I've been wearing pretty much nonstop. I prefer to spend a bit more on boots to make sure they last.
Bought a cheap ass pair of 80 dollar Wolverine workbooks, and the sole split on one boot within two months. Garbage.
Redwings are made to last.
Leather gloves, no fabric to soak in the diesel. Pretrip, landing gear, connections and such. Men's Leather Work Gloves with Adjustable Wrist, Large (Wells Lamont 1132L),Saddle tan https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004R9RW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JCAVQRQ9WBW32YAGQ89W
Some decent hiking type boots you could slip on and off fairly easy... good pair of shoes as a backup. If you’re a flip flopper just ignore all my comments.
For steel/aluminum wires I use this:

I haven’t ran into any issues as of yet. I’ve used them for many years.
I’ve tried these but they work typically better on smaller wires https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00125KG9C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_MEGA36X1C8JDCQEY17XV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You can have him try this small adze. Only weighs a pound and a half and you get cutting surfaces that are 90 degrees opposed to make chipping ice easier.
I wear Bates composite toe with side zip. Very light weight, warmer because no steel toe, ANSI rated, not terribly pricy, easy on/off and very comfortable. I buy the desert tan because they are cheaper than the black ones, avail in a couple of other colors, too. I wear wool socks with them and sock liners if I'm going to be working outside all day, stay warm.
thanks. they look like a solid company.
grabbed this one:
Milton S-693-12 1/4" FNPT Extended Reach Dual Head Air Chuck
I bought a little plug in oven, I bring something to heat up and eat warm everyday. Great in the winter, something like this:

This one, though I'm not sure if they make it anymore as it doesn't seem to be in stock on Amazon? Too bad, it's a great unit!
I wanna keep a couple of cheap locks on hand for people that poss me off. Not just other drivers. Shippers and receivers too.
Maybe get some super glue for key hatches...hmmm...pretty tempting.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alk.copilot.mapviewer&hl=en_US Also available from the usual pirate sites to load onto Android with the maps needed, the maps are stored on the phone so mobile service isn't needed, that's where the old phone comes into play. This app was loaded on my handheld device at my first trucking job, and I have used it on my phone as well. It'll work as well as the device it's installed onto will, the Windows CE device was always slow, but an Android phone with nothing else running is great. Used it on a Nexus 5, and an LG something, a mid-range phone at best. It's possible to get the app and maps separately too, if one desired to keep costs low, again via pirating.
I've had several students use this one and pass the first time https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.truckingtruth.cdl_test
After each question you can scroll down a little and gives you the text right from the book concerning that question. Also some time they will have their little comment after that.
I use CoPilot for trucks which is also one of the ones that omnitracs has available to companies through their elog.
I would recommend that you use street view and Google maps to get GPS coordinates and use that to program your stops. The addressing algorithm is it's weakest thing. I had a company that used CoPilot and didn't program it correctly and it was horrible. Doing it using gmaps to set the waypoints makes it pretty reliable.
That being said, with any navigation aid you're the driver and it's up to you to ensure your not breaking laws or hitting bridges.
I put a star on Google Maps at every shipper in consignee. I also use Google Opinion Rewards app. It sends surveys to you based on places you been and whatnot. Since we travel a lot, why not? In return, you earn credit in the Play store. I've bought a lot of apps with my earned money from surveys. I joined on 11/9/13 and have racked up $116.90 to date. Google Rewards
My Niece bought me this https://www.amazon.com/RoadPro-RPO-24DT-Over-The-Wheel-Desktop/dp/B001JT3N5A/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2JKIAG0668MV2&keywords=steering+wheel+desk+for+semi+trucks&qid=1671501061&sprefix=steering+wheel+desk%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-5Years ago. I used it darn near every single day I was driving.
I use these when I'm unloading or it's wet. Bare foot with my socks when I'm driving, and some cheap $7 Walmart slides doing anything else.
I went with the OPT7 Aura Pro. You can run it from the fuse box and have it activate when you open the door or any aux port. I'm running from the port at the foot of the bed, near the fridge. It runs under the carpet to bluetooth controller behind the passenger seat. Cable is wrapped around the seat strap to keep the cable from wandering and run under the carpet to the driver side, wrapped and measured for full rise in the seat, then zip-tied with the led strip. the splitter is at the corner where the 2 strips meet.
It’s a company called purple. I tried one and didn’t care for it at all. Mine was a free knock off from the company though.
Tennis ball method works. Also, no wallets in back pockets, and try not to cross your feet when you sleep.

I have used the Purple Ultimate Seat Cushion for years now and swear by it. Can't remember what I paid for it, probably used Pilot points anyway. Beware of knockoffs on Amazon
Gives me about 3 or 4 hours before my ass starts to hurt
Magnetic mount. Went to that years ago and haven't looked back This one if it's a company truck or if it's your truck this one will fit in a much smaller space on your dash. Use the large metal plate on the outside of your phone case for the most holding power. Very rarely have mine pop off on even the worst of potholes
Good luck.
Start a business you know nothing about? You don’t know your cost structure, you don’t have customers lined up, you don’t know the FMCSA and DOT regulations. Maybe consult a CPA who knows the tax implications for depreciation, state, local, and federal taxes. Etc….
Trucking is a tough business. You probably heard in the recent past, money was being made hand over fist. Those days are over. FedEx Freight LTL is laying off drivers, owner operators without contracts are not making money because the bottom dropped out.
Freight rates have continued to fall as global trade volumes slow as a result of shrinking demand for goods, the latest data from S&P Global Market Intelligence showed. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/08/shipping-rates-are-still-falling-in-another-sign-that-a-global-recession-may-be-coming.html

I imagine this is like when you were a kid and you got on the bicycle the first few times.
To prevent anxiety or heart attack, learn to breath properly when you're under stress and need to relax. Seems silly but it does help. Like others said, the stress will probably be less as you get more experience and more comfortable with the work.
This is the app that I use for breathing.

Here I made it easy for you. This is the one I use. Great clarity in the image, and decent low light recording. You'll need an SD card as well.
I picked up a laptop stand that adjusts to the odd angles of the mattress to give a flat surface for a mouse pad.
While I'm driving I just put them mouse on the bed so it doesn't slide around.
Yes. I have lost three video cards and a motherboard trying to work out this problem.
Eventually I found thisthis which made all the difference.
There are several other variations of that support bracket, but I haven't tried them so I can't really recommend them yet.
Also you'll want to get a pure sine battery backup to clean the energy going into it. Otherwise every time you turn the truck on you run the risk of frying your memory. And to keep it from shutting off when you turn the key.
Not a trucker, but I worked many construction jobs and this may work. Always keep a 5 gallon bucket, a roll of TP or paper towels, and a few GOOD garbage bags in the truck. I can’t stress the good bags enough. These are good https://www.amazon.com/Hefty-Ultimate-Kitchen-Clean-Burst/dp/B00I9J3GUA line the bucket with the garbage bag, and you have an instant toilet. Throw enough paper in there to soak up any liquid (before or after the emergency before tying the bag up) That way if the bag gets a pinhole it’s not a huge emergency. It also saves the store it truck stop employee who empties the garbage from any mishaps (if there’s dumpster access to throw it right in there).
All you need is a place to sit on a bucket where no one sees you. There’s also no maintenance like with a camper potty. If it’s for the once in a while emergency, you don’t want to deal with that.

This is a very solid air vent one. It is very, easily adjustable, and it will stay wherever you adjust it. I used this version until I switched trucks and didn't have a convenient vent location to use it in.
There is also another version that has a clamp you twist tight onto a flat surface. I didn't think it would work well but it has surprised me. The clamp stays tight.
I carry both versions in a bag now. They're cheap and worth the convenience.
Come on people let's get creative.... Can't believe nobody mentioned this
It works pretty damn well
I’m no sucker, I’m making my own! Seriously, though, it’s fairly cheap to make your own, and you end up with a higher quality hose. I’m still piecing things together, (I’m lazy), but my plan is a 5’ section from the gladhand to a gauge like this, and then to either a 25’ or 50’ of hose with a locking chuck to attach to the tire. Call me a chickenshit, but I am NOT standing anywhere near a tire that’s being inflated.
I got an Extremus brand soft sided cooler from Amazon. Ice lasted for 3 days on a camping trip across Nevada in August with the cooler strapped to the back of my motorcycle, not in an airconditioned truck.
It's not designed with storage pockets, but it does have a bunch of attachment points you can clip other bags onto. It's also not cheap.
This is the one I got. https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Refrigerator-Freezer-Compressor-Vehicle/dp/B089DBWP7Z?pd_rd_w=fiQ56&content-id=amzn1.sym.1db61dc1-18bd-4e84-ade3-9872a4852ad6&pf_rd_p=1db61dc1-18bd-4e84-ade3-9872a4852ad6&pf_rd_r=E4WGNAY6YVP6NQJ4GSAM&... I've had it over a year now and works great so far. I don't use the 12v option, but have it ran to my inverter. From what I read it doesn't work well as a 12v, so I haven't bothered with it.
I actually bought mine from Zappo, which I think is owned by Amazon. But I found that the boots were cheaper on Amazon. I paid about 150$ which my company reimbursed me for. If they aren't comfortable swap out the insole. I've delivered during rainstorms and walked through puddles and never have my feet gotten wet. No complaints.

I recently ordered a pair of these buttons in my Star, which has nowhere near as purrdy of a you dash as you. They’re somewhere traveling back and forth between two warehouses the last 4days now according to the tracking.
Here in the states they sell generic bolt-on mirrors. You can buy the frame separate. I'd imagine they have similar there. Find something that fits, or make it fit.
I clamp this to the grab rail in the truck: https://www.amazon.com/Lamicall-Bike-Phone-Holder-Mount/dp/B08R8MZYMH
Basically anything that's meant for bike or motorcycle handlebars will clamp onto the grab rail, if your truck has one. Just gotta find one that can be clamped and unclamped easily without tools.
First and foremost you need to focus on getting the weight down. You say you can physically do the job, yet you can't climb in a trailer?
Are you able to climb underneath to check frames, brakes, kingpin, and crossmembers?
In the meantime this should work for you. https://www.amazon.com/DeWalt-DXL3810-06-Ladder-6-Feet-Silver/dp/B008DRMRU8/ref=mp_s_a_1_17?crid=VYPSZA8QTHDU&keywords=500+lb+step+ladder&qid=1660913517&sprefix=500lb+step+ladder%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-17
I would recommend a Plantronics headset. It's what most call centers use and they are fairly durable with a good microphone.
I recently began to carry some of these little battery operated ["beacons"](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XKB5PP1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 to help me get my trailer backed into my unlit home yard/parking lot at nights, and I'm thinking I'll also give them a try the next time I encounter one of these interior style docks.
I use baby wipes for the fast and easy stuff. But for brushing my teeth, washing my face in the morning, serious hand cleaning with degreaser, etc. I have a 3 1/2 gallon water jug with spigot in my drivers side utility bay that slides right out for use quickly (however note that there is a small clamp actually inside the spigot itself which needs to be tightened, or this thing will leak). - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09VKW9XSY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 - https://imgur.com/a/j1xtqlF
In Canada they're different. The red couplers have a small nub that isn't found on the blue couplers. I had a veteran trucker tell me it's so you know which is which when you can't see the paint (covered in mud or rust or wore off).
My "kitchen" tub (learned from car camping groups) include the basics.
$25 gas stove and a can or 2 of the butane fuel canisters are all you need. Works for camping or any small living space. Or if you have electric stove but wants to cook stir-fry which requires brief high heat and immediate cooler temp.

It's called Tempstick
My wife says this is the one we got.
Neither. This bad boy is 60 bucks and works like a charm.
No need to spend a ton. I got this a few years ago and it works great. Battery last all day and cancels noise perfectly.
