Sure, counting the breaths is a technique that not all but many meditation teachers recommend. It's a kind of "noting" or "labelling" phenomena that arise while meditating and it helps to establish a mind state called "calm abiding" (samatha). And it may just as well help you to count the duration of each in and out breath. Culadasa in his book The Mind Illuminated also recommends to look ever more closely at all aspects of the breath, e.g. the length of in- and out-breath and the pauses in between and how they compare to each other. At some point, once you established samatha, the counting will naturally disappear, as you don't need it any more.
You may find the teachings and instructions of S.N. Goenka interesting. He emphasised that meditation goes hand in hand with ALL religions. (It just so happens that Goenka was not a big fan of counting the breaths. But do it anyways if you find it useful.)
And check out the app Pranayama Breath if you want to keep a particular rythm of breathing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abdula.pranabreath
What have you tried that has or hasn't worked? I have sleep issues as well. Cbd oil or just smoking/eating weed in general, copa iba, and breathing exercises.
This is a nice and simple breathing app to learn techniques, if you have Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abdula.pranabreath
Concentrate on your breathing. Every time your mind goes to something else, just go back to your breathing. I’m definitely NOT an expert, but I use the app Prana Breath which really helps me when I need to calm down.
There is a huge world for meditation and every person could use different type.
Just choose want feels right to you
If you want active moving meditations, search for catharsis https://youtu.be/xYMTXYB-Fvk this one is great, or even punching pillows can work. You can also try osho dynamic.
On the other spectrum, you can try hatha yoga or yin yoga.
If its pure meditation youre looking for, try vipassana or mindfulness (they have retreat centers everywhere) its very hard, sitting many hours, very strict .. but the benefits are amazing.
But my first recommendation would be breathing... You can try downloading the app prana breath (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abdula.pranabreath) and play with it... Or check 4:7:8 or type "pranayama" Im google
I used to use an app called Prana Breath which helped me a lot since I knew nothing at all about meditation and stuff like that, it's very user-friendly.
I suggest you to try it out because, at least for me, after every session I always felt good and energized, plus meditation kicks away the urges, what do you want more? ;)
I imagine this is like when you were a kid and you got on the bicycle the first few times.
To prevent anxiety or heart attack, learn to breath properly when you're under stress and need to relax. Seems silly but it does help. Like others said, the stress will probably be less as you get more experience and more comfortable with the work.
This is the app that I use for breathing.

I meditate with Prana breath off and on for about 5 years. I like that there is no taking and a variety of training options. There are audio and visuals as well. I've calmed myself from a panic attack using this app.
I also use downdog app to try to practice every day. Again there is a lot of customization on voice type, length, style and directions. This has been the best at home workout for me and I've tried a lot of different things from P90x, pelaton, to a rowing machine, etc.
Basically, I've tried almost anything an article and therapist has recommended to me over my mental health journey. The thing I've finally realized is to pick up each thing, when I need it. It may not be every day and definitely not the same thing in a week, but to try to do something daily. This seems to fit my personality the best.
I hope this helps someone on their journey!

A helpful place to start with Pranayama. The designer is Ukrainian and sent out a message to please practice patience with the app for the time being. Nonetheless, I have used Prana (and this app) before matra mediation, yoga, or Apnea training as a warm-up and find it helpful.

I know it might seem simple, but I have found it very effective. If you have not tried this breathing app, Please give it a solid week of effort. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abdula.pranabreath&hl=en_US once installed, if you flip up on the screen, you will find options for Relaxing and Anti-Stress. these are my fav
I use this app and practice Square Breathing (there's a Sanskrit term for it but I can't remember) Its not in the app by default but I added it.

For meditation, I'm a beginner and find it easier via guided sessions. Currently I'm doing a 30 day course called "How to Meditate" in Calm Premium Subscription.

Thanks for taking the time do to such an in depth reply. I think it's important to have more awareness on the subject since there's a crucial lack of information and discussion on this matter. There lot of information to cover, having a dedicated sub for this matter might be a interesting idea; modern pollution and how to deal with it.
I do sauna at least three times a week, happy to learn it might help for this matter, it such a great thing to do. I recently added pranayama breathing withing the sauna and I had amazing result.
I don't really freak out about all this, It's more for me about optimizing all the small detail in my life to live more healthy, awake and happy.
Cheers.
Why can't you get through it? Have you tried an app? if you're on android this one is awesome. So much control and structure. You can gradually work yourself up if the problem is what you're practicing is too hard...if it's patience and keeping structure over a long period of time, the app is amazing. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abdula.pranabreath&hl=en
This app, Prana Breath, which visualizes breathing habits has really helped me. Deep, calming breaths do wonders for stress.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abdula.pranabreath Do not underestimate the power of breathing.
I use an app called Prana Breath on Android.

I use Prana Breath. It's simple and light https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abdula.pranabreath
You realize in Zen meditation your eyes are open? But yes there is something good about "quantum breathing"--the "Prana Breath" app for Android calls it "Harmony" and has you do 1 in 4 hold 2 out 1 hold out instead of 1-1-1-1. I do four seconds so it's about one breath every 32 seconds--four seconds in, hold for sixteen, eight seconds out, hold for four seconds. And sometimes I'll hold the in or out for a complete cycle and start breathing again after the extra 32 second hold. It seems to massage the vagus nerve system.
And there is something with Vipassana meditation as well. I attended a ten day silent retreat earlier this year and part of the spell that they didn't fully describe seems to be a hypoxia high--getting high off long time lack of oxygen. I could feel my heart beating in 2/3s of my body and almost felt like I was flying.
There are also some people who claim that DMT is produced in your lungs.
My go to is Prana Breath Totally customizable in every aspect down to the millisecond.
