I've been using Sync Pro on Android for a long while and love it (/r/redditsync/). I don't think they have an iOS app. If you have an Android device I would highly recommend it.
Even though they said they wouldn't do this, I'm pretty sure that at some point down the line they'll pull what Twitter did and change the terms of service for their API to make it basically impossible to have a third party app and force everyone to download the official reddit app. It's only a matter of time.
But honestly, restricting your access to reddit to only desktop is probably better for you in the end.
Quick link for Sync Pro. Dev deserves some serious credit. Updates it weekly.
Reddit Sync Pro is my undisputed #1. I've tried a great deal of Reddit apps and I always end up downloading the new / updated ones just to try them out when I hear about them but nothing comes close in terms of my user experience. Give it a shot if you haven't already!
That's simply not true. Sync for reddit (Pro) does not come with the ad libraries and hence doesn't require any of their permissions.
However, if the regular app was made ad free via IAP, that won't change the required permissions. The permission won't be used by it - but is still required for installation.
I personally use Sync for reddit. Its got everything I need. I've tried a few others but I always come back to Sync.

For me, Reddit = Sync at this point. Occasionally I'll get a Reddit result on Google that doesn't auto-load in the app, and it's bloody awful. Just comes across as desperate to get you to use the official app.
EDIT: seems like there's a lot of choices for good Reddit apps, but we're all united by a common distaste for the 'official' experience...
Assuming you understand this is a beta (bugs, uncomplete features, frequent changes and so on are expected), you can join the beta program using the Play Store. Go to Sync Pro there*, and scroll to the bottom. You'll find a dialog with more info and a Join or Accept button.

Just a word of warning...
If you have more than one Google account I advise buying the standalone pro version rather than purchasing via in-app purchases.
There is a bug whereby some apps purchased via in-app purchases will not retain premium functionality if you have more than one account as they become associated somehow with the wrong account.
Standalone paid apps do not have this issue.

I haven't used the app in over a year, but it was my favorite app. It adheres to Android Material guidelines and is very smooth.
Sync for Reddit (Pro) you can literally change everything from the font for all parts of text for the app, to colors, to thumbnail size and position. You can pause all gifs. They give the reddit text editing options in the compose screen. Also if there is a link to a website in a comment the app puts what the link goes to in parentheses behind it.

What platform are you on? Sync Pro for Android shows the text of flairs, including dual flairs on the CFB subs. It's pretty great.

I don't know if any of you have heard of it yet, but yesterday I discovered a cool Reddit app that has Material Design. It is called Sync for Reddit and the dev is on reddit too - /u/ljdawson!
The official app is terrible.
On Android, I'd recommend Sync -- Sync also has a universal content filter that'd work for hiding pulls posts.

Both played the audio, I believe the default reddit app actually mishandles a lot of media, I tried it briefly but preferred sync anyway. Sync doesn't do the new reddit chat, just the classic messaging. I personally don't use the newer chat and only realize I had messages in it when I'm on my PC, but if someone used that all the time Sync would definitely be a deal breaker.
The app is updated often and has been for years. Worth every penny. It just works. Highly recommend the pro version.

Sync Pro is a paid app, Sync Free is a free app with in app purchase to remove ads. After the IAP for free, Pro and Free are essentially the same. However, sometimes Google's IAP system can be faulty and a user of Sync Free with ads removed can have ads showing up on their app but that can be typically fixed with a reboot or reinstall.

Not sure how it works exactly, but when you watch OP's video it has the original audio. I think it must be identifying and serving the original video upload rather than Gfycat's soundless output.
I don't think you can buy it from within the free app. You have to go back to the app store.
You may be able to try going through the Play store support and explain that you want to refund the in app purchase, and then buy the pro app instead.
I bought the pro paid app 3 years ago for that reason. I forget what it added, I think ad free and maybe a few features. Well worth buying with Google fun bucks from opinion rewards.
Try Sync for Reddit. It’s my favorite Reddit app. In general, developers can do really awesome customizations with native apps for those sites that provide a rich API, like Reddit. I whole-heartedly recommend using a light native app instead of Hermit for sites like that. (Hermit Dev here.)
Mainly because of the search option. You can type in anything lets say i search for "sports". Every subreddit related to sports will pop up in a list with a brief description of the subreddit. It also looks really clean and is very customisable.
If youre on a subreddit that only posts pictures you can set the view to "Full height cards" and that was you dont have to open a link just to see an image. Pressing and holding an image will also give you a preview.

Yeah, unfortunately the filters use an exploit that doesn't work on mobile. Most reddit apps have built-in filters so I would recommend using one of those. Sync for reddit Pro has been my favorite for a few years now.

Sync for Reddit Pro had been my go to Android app. Tried several others and this has been the best looking and most configurable I've used.
There is only one developer and he can't work on the app right now (for whatever private reason).

And tip if you're planning to get pro licence, get the pro version instead.
Seems that is has less issues with purchase checks and it doesn't include ad libraries.
I'm surprised Sync for reddit hasn't been recommended, the Material You update is miles better than any other reddit app for Android
You might consider upgrading to the Pro version and opt-in to the beta, you'll get the new design that way with many improvements. Otherwise, you'll need to wait until end of this month (approx) for the non-beta to be released.

To collapse all comments, click on the speech bubble icon with the number next to it. If you're on version 20, this is in the header area at the very top when you first open a thread's comments. If you've scrolled a way down, hit the three dots in the top-right and then "Collapse all". If you're on version 19, I seem to remember this being in the same place, but I could be wrong.
To collapse a single comment, tap once on a comment. This can be changed to a long-press, which I prefer.

Very customizable, and very intuitive. Using anything else feels like learning a new language. No ads in the pro version. Worth the money.

The features should be the same between the two. However buying the Pro apps gives you the advantage of being able to share it using Family Library.
I recommend sync if you're on Android. I've never had an iPhone but I've used several Android apps and sync is by far my favorite.

I use sync pro and it's 100% worth the cost. Started using it when I swapped over to android 4+ years ago and I'm still using it now.
I use Sync for Reddit to remove posts and change the flair... May have to just bite the bullet and use Sync. But I don't want to because I like Boost.

We already have that with the chat system. I don't know if you can send images and chat but you do have to approve people before they can talk to you.
IIRC they can say one message to open with and then need approval for more? I never use it because I always use mobile with Sync which doesn't support it
I can vouch that Sync for Reddit is a very neat reddit client. Its not very expensive also. You can probably buy it from two surveys on Google Rewards.
If you're going to buy, buy the actual "reddit Sync Pro" in the app store. People have been running into issues upgrading the app, where the ads remain active.
Also, keep in mind that the app hasn't been updated since April 26, 2019. Bugs are starting to pop up with new Android updates, and none are getting fixed. You might want to hold off buying.
Yes but it depends on what platform you re on. RES for desktop/chrome and (I use) sync pro which also lets you do it.
Delete the app. Use a third party one, I personally like Sync for Reddit Pro, it's got a good dark theme, it's easy to read, and it's fairly customizable (I've got mine looking like this). The $4 for the pro version was worth it for me, but I hate ads a lot so the free one might be cool if you're alright with them.
The Pro version of Sync for reddit, although as far as I know it's not a paid feature so it should be in the free version as well. It'll show the size in the bottom right corner when you select an image or gif, and you can cancel loading it.
It's a handy feature to have, in my opinion. Sometimes (like this post) people will link larger versions than nescessary and there's often a better, more bandwidth friendly version in the comments (like a webm).
Sync for Reddit. Buy it and thank me later. If you're broke then download the pro apk from somewhere meanwhile. But just buy it dude. $3-$4 bucks will change your Reddit experience and the devs worked hard on this.
Sync for Reddit Pro– in my opinion it's not just one of the best Reddit apps out there, it's also the one of the best apps I have on my phone. It's beautifully designed, works flawlessly and they are constantly releasing updates that actually improve the app instead of just behind the scenes bug fixes. There is a free version, and I'm not sure there are very many extra features when you pay for it. The point is that it's so good that they deserve your money so they can keep doing what they're doing.

Instander Is a good modified Instagram app of you use the platform. I've been using it for a while and it blocks ads. This app requires you to delete the official Instagram client before installing.
YouTube Vanced is another one I've been using for a while. I enjoy the ad and sponsor blocking feature.
My Reddit client is Sync Pro two years of use, and no issues at all.
The non Google play Telegram client. A fee weeks ago I saw the Google Play store and Apple Play true power when they both blocked a news channel called (Disclosed TV) a lot of users were complaining that they weren't able too go into the channel group but all content was blocked, most had GPS and AAS versions installed. Only a few of us on Android had the direct downloaded app installed from the website that wasn't effected by the block at all.
Bromite is my browser of choice. It's strips all the Google things for those concerned about privacy and all the other Google related stuffs.
Bitwarden is my number one password manager on Android, right now I'm testing out Googles new password manager system wide on my device. It's working nice so far especially with Gboard, and I plan on keeping just encase some type of breach takes place on whatever platform. My plan with that is too simply download all my passwords via a .csv file and then delete everything from either service just as a just in case scenario.
(I still prefer Bitwarden tho 😉)
The share sheet stuff is Clean Share when you share a link to someone, you select (Share Sheet) when the share menu shows up, then it brings up a cleaned up sheet that strips all tracking instances from whatever link you share to yourself or someone else. I find it pretty cool.
None of these apps effect my phone's performance and I'm using A12 Beta 2.1, and I'm still amazed that this is all possible on a platform such as Android.

I am using Sync for Reddit in "Sports Mode" where it auto-refreshes right where I'm scrolled to.

I use this app instead of the normal one. You have a to pay a few bucks, but it's worth it.

Actually, some third party apps do have push notifications. Sync for Reddit for example has it, and even has an option for instant ones by having the official Reddit app installed.
As for desktop sync, I don't know what that is. I mean, I know the purpose by the phrase "desktop sync", but don't care for it.
The official Reddit app is shite, I recommend Sync Pro.
I don't use the web interface on my phone, I use Sync for Reddit, once set up properly it is a joy to use.

Even on my iPhone I was pretty much all Google which made the transition easy. I'll encourage you to do the same - Google Photos especially. Sync those up before you get the phone.
I gave up on iTunes and pretty much just use Spotify now which works well. Pick yourself up a Chromecast or two if you haven't already.

I've been using this for ad free Reddit...
after 2 years the developer thought to place ads that's the reason for all the criticism.
but aside from ads the features and experience it provides is the best (I have paid for the Sync Pro, but after that switched to Joey) even now with the ads it is far better than others (in my opinion).
