If you're on Android - install Google opinion rewards (search the play store). Do a few surveys, they reward you with play store credit. Most times the very first survey is worth $1. Wait a few days, get over $2.
Purchase BR from the play store with store credit. Don't use in app purchase.
No ads for life, cost you nothing.
Also, the rewards app works better if you leave location history on. You'll get surveys asking to rank stores you've visited. Just don't lie to the app, they'll know you're lieing and stop sending you surveys.
I've been doing Google opinion rewards for 1.5 years, and have over $75 in play store credit.
Edit:. Here's the link to the rewards app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.paidtasks
It doesn't exactly look like you're dropping frames; I could be wrong, it is a gif. IMO this post comes across as needless complaining.
"How dare the dev improve the general user experience of the app with no real performance impact."
Yes, that little animation is slightly more expensive to render out, but not by much. Using your same logic you might as well ask why the font is being anti-aliased.
"Wouldn't it run faster if it wasn't anti-aliased?"
Technically yes, but, for the small performance cost, the aesthetic improvement is beneficial for most people.
Ultimately, the dev is the one who is gonna draw the line in the sand on this kind of thing, but generally if the feature isn't causing you problems, maybe don't complain about it.
The reddit iPhone app is open source and sees pretty active development. Maybe baconreader could benefit from the same. Free software is something we should all support, and making an open source application to interface with an open source website on an open source device would be fitting, ha?
If you buy the premium version through the Play Store, there should be no ad code. If you do an in-app UPGRADE to premium, you'll still have the ad code in perpetuity. BR seems to have a tendency for this "dormant" code to pop up for premium users who upgrade in-app.
Tl;dr: Buy BaconReader Premium instead of upgrading through the app, or you're going to have a bad time.
Well. I thought it would not be correct to advertise other apps. After trying of couple of them I ended up with Sync
I'm pretty happy with it so far.
If you DO decide to pay for the app, buy the standalone BaconReader Premium app, don't do an in-app upgrade. Upgrading leaves leftover ad code which has popped up even for paid users before.
I would highly recommend using Chromer in conjunction with BaconReader. It has perfectly fixed ALL issues with links of any sort for me.
Good morning /u/skunktrunk. Apparently you have not been reading the responses from us re: the ads and the battery drain. We receive ads from various networks, and use their sdks to display the ads. Ever since the battery drain issue surfaced, we have responded to 99% of the complaints, explaining there are ads that are keeping threads open in the background, and to alleviate the problem, you need to back all the way out of the application instead of hitting the Home button to background the app. Backing out will stop the background threads from running. To be a little more pointed about the source of this issue, we have to point to Google. They have admitted that their new ad sdk is the source of the battery drain: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-admob-ads-sdk/dYeHyCqVVvU
If you would like to do something productive to help us out, feel free to apply pressure to Google.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.damianpiwowarski.navbarapps
Use this and you can change it to any color or image you want.
Sure thing! One place that uses gfycat a lot is r/soccer, usually with at least one link on the front page at any given time. Here is an example of a link that caused problems: http://gfycat.com/DelectableDecimalBufflehead
Ill see if I can find some that work, I know that the occasional one does
Edit: I also found this one which works fine with the gif option, however the html5 option fails to loop the way it is supposed to http://www.gfycat.com/MediocreRepentantBluebottle#
The only difference I'm noticing is that the second one has a '#' at the end which could mean something ( gfycat has randomized naming so the # is definitely not just part of the file name)
Sync for Reddit (Pro) you can literally change everything from the font for all parts of text for the app, to colors, to thumbnail size and position. You can pause all gifs. They give the reddit text editing options in the compose screen. Also if there is a link to a website in a comment the app puts what the link goes to in parentheses behind it.
Edit: Adding stuff as I remember it.
Hi BaconX2, yes, as some users have stated, the battery drain is being caused by the google ad sdk. There is a thread below you can read regarding the issue, although they have not updated the thread since November, and it states they are fixing it on the backend...however our ad sdk source is telling us that Google informed them it will require an updated ad sdk from them, which we are still waiting on. Meanwhile, if you will back all the way out of the app (instead of backgrounding with the Home button) or swipe it out of recent apps, it should help as this will kill any background threads they are leaving open.
Here's the link to the google issue: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-admob-ads-sdk/dYeHyCqVVvU
Sorry you feel we are being "shady". We actually are working with our ad providers to remove any offending ads...but the largest culprit is Google: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-admob-ads-sdk/dYeHyCqVVvU
Feel free to apply pressure to Google to help us out.
FYI, we actually make more money by serving ads, than we do by a 1 time purchase of the ad free version.
Hard to fully say if it was tied directly to imgur as I know there have been some periodic issues from time to time with their connection.
Typically if that is the case, we look here: http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/imgur.com.html
Does seem that clear cache will speed up things, especially if the space on your device is a little crowded.
Let us know if this continues, anyone.

Right now, this site is showing a bit of a delay by imgur in the past couple of hours? Can you try restarting the app or even restarting your device?
http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/imgur.com.html
There were several reports of imgur being down yesterday. (e.g., http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/imgur.com.html)
I'm not having any issues at the moment for it. Are you still experiencing issues?
I believe reddit has been having server issues out the ying-yang recently... which would explain the 503 errors.
The CloudFlare redirect... CloudFlare is a security/optimizer and it looks like Reddit.com uses them..
TL;DR: It was Reddit & Reddit.
Nitpick: we would actually like to be able to set "official" flair to posts/users through the app... it is on our roadmap as a want. :) In the meantime, we find that [This sort of delineation] works.
Although, no big changes in latest release 5.9.6.2. we are looking into this to fix asap.
May I know which android OS version you are on?
I use this app and it works great: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tegnatiek.veddit
Just share the post to the app and it will be downloaded, you can also quickly share the downloaded video.
Same here (Samsung S8).. been like this for a month or two, presumably since an update was pushed out.
I'm getting so sick of baconreader's bugs being left unfixed for years.. probably going to switch to Relay
I can't speak for IOS, however there is a separate app listing for pro on the playstore.
Here is the link for BaconReader Premium on the play store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.onelouder.baconreader.premium&hl=en
This happens when this directory is deleted. To fix it, just recreate it with your favourite File Manager. I recommend ES File Explorer.
We are sorry you are offended, and that you think we are "tricking you". Honestly, the battery drain culprit is the ads...coming from the Google ad sdk. Google is aware of the issue, but so far it has not been corrected. If you would like to see the status of the issue, go to this link...but notice how there has been no update since December...and had a supposed ETA of January... Best thing to do is always back all the way out of the app to exit (not hit Home button), or swipe the app out of recent apps when you exit
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-admob-ads-sdk/dYeHyCqVVvU
Thanks for letting me know. Try swiping the app out of recent apps each time you leave it, or back all the way out, and let me know if it helps.
EDIT: Here's a link to one post re: the google issue if you care to follow along... https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-admob-ads-sdk/dYeHyCqVVvU
We have not yet heard if they have done their "engine overhaul" or not.
Try NewPipe, an alternative youtube app. I was having issues with the stock youtube app on my Moto X 2013, and it fixed them all. I have it set up to open all videos with MX Player.
Yes, it was up until about a year and a half ago. Apple pulled all the 3rd party reddit apps out of the store for NSFW content and required the removal of NSFW toggles for the apps to be republished.
yeah. hit up this link, and then scroll down to find the android download. Of course it isn't available in the play store, and you'll need to change your android settings to allow the side load of APK's not from play store.
Has it happened a lot?
Whenever something comes back from reddit like this, I like to check:
http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/reddit.com.html
It gives insights into whether or not it is us or reddit typically... looking at it recently... it says... Last down within the past hour so I will credit this to being a reddit server thing indeed (as /u/jrlionheart00 mentioned).
Well hopefully you can see this:
Imgur was having issues anytime between September 7th (21:46 PT) and September 8th (4:06 PT) which would have been within the last 21 hours...
Feel free to check this link/site in the future
/u/onelouderchic says it best:
"You are correct. We did not want to hold up either iOS or Android releases with HTTPS to try to get it working correctly. For now you will have to use the external browser to view them."
It was a curveball imgur threw at us a few days before we were to release the new version. And let us know if imgur is working now, it looked like there were troubles around the time of the original post with loading about 5x slower.
/r/BlankElixer, Is this still occurring for you?
Looks like there may have been troubles through imgur with connecting about 14-16 hours ago at the time of this post: http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/imgur.com.html

Not a BaconReader rep or tech. But I have a particular set of skills - skills that I have acquired over a very mediocre career...
My advice would be - at ALL times and for ALL apps - to use a basic auto-saving mark-up tool for crafting any post of longer or detailed composition; and then, to copy those wysiwyg creations into each corresponding target field...
Interruptions happen! By using an app like WriterPlus --
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.easy4u.writer
-- work does not get compromised or lost, no matter what the interruption is or however long that it lasts...
It's what I do...
Just sayin'...
I have photosensitivity and this flashing ad is hurting me. I tried to report and change adsense settings in various ways to no avail: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.home.news.breaking
Seeing as they obviously tried to fix it; they fully understand it..
Bugs happen.. It's not like bugs are introduced on purpose, especially not ones they just wrote about having fixed, yet obviously didn't. We're all human - everyone makes mistakes. That doesn't make us more or less suited to fulfill a job..
But seriously.. My dude.. Have you considered Google's reward program? - it'll easily help you get the 2 bucks that BaconReader Premium costs - then all these ad-related issues you have; will be totally gone..
Aside from the copy/paste step, there isn't much of a difference with regard to the overall functionality that you're requesting...
I mentioned what I do very specifically because it's quicker & easier to use than anything else in my experience. Definitely a testimonial of sorts on my part!
Edit: Did I mention that the app is free and WITHOUT ads? Because it is...

No obligation! No hidden charges! Act now!

Today is your LUCKY day!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.onelouder.baconreader.premium
Pro Tip #1: Download the linked Premium build. Do NOT upgrade your ad-experience build to Pro from within the app. The two builds are not precisely the same...
Pro Tip #2: As an Android user, I can only link within the Play Store. For Apple users, getting to the Premium point-of-sale is all on you...
Use imgurviewer (it's not just for imgur links) and set links to open in external browser. Then set imgurviewer as the default to open images/gifs/videos. Then, never want to open images/videos in baconreader again. It's so much better. I wish baconreader could be set to let v.reddit links open outside of the app. Imgurviewer was so much better for that.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ensoft.imgurviewer
It's also open source, so it gets support for new sites all the time and has 0 ads.
Are the videos that you are trying to download from v.reddit? IIRC the video and audio on that site are stored as two separate files. There is an app called v.share.it that merges both files together. All you'll need to do is share the v.reddit link to the app. Then it will let you choose where to send the MP4 file.
There are no advertisements if you upgrade to premium. Just make sure you don't upgrade in app and you instead get the premium app. Saves a lot of headache with advertising bugs that people have mentioned in this subreddit.
If you buy in-app, ads will pop up at some point and then you'll have to search the sub to find out how.
But, if you buy Premium you won't have to worry about it.
If you're on Android, I use AppLock for this purpose. It's really good, has lots of themes, etc. The only downside is the fullscreen ads in the free version that usually pop up when you exit an app, but they are easy to get rid of by just hitting the "back" button one more time. Or you could buy the premium version if you like it and not worry about ads.
I came here to say exactly this. Most times the first survey you get is for $1.
If you're on Android, install Google opinion rewards, get free credit in the play store, buy Baconreader premium with credit from surveys.
Every app I use that had a paid version has been upgraded, and it cost me nothing.
That's one year with of surveys.
Edit:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.paidtasks
Bacon Reader.
If you like the app, buy the premium in the market place.
Too young or don't want to spend money? Use Google Opinion Rewards. That's how I bought mine.
The one solution I can think of is to enable the external browser and use Chromer and log in there, which will save the log-in for next time.
I found a fix for my phone (Galaxy S4). I downloaded an app that disabled ipv6 on my home network and now gfycat and other apps work like a charm:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.lennartschoch.disableipv6
Uninstall the non-premium, then go to this link and install from there. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.onelouder.baconreader.premium&hl=en&referrer=utm_source%3Dgoogle%26utm_medium%3Dorganic%26utm_term%3Dbaconreader+premium&pcampaignid=APPU_1_b13mVbvoKtCXygSGkZdQ
Woah, how do you expect someone to pay for an add free app Mr. Moneybags?
Not by installing Google Opinion Rewards and getting a few free dollars a month for awnsering 10 multiple choice questions I assume.
I will jump in (again lol) just to confirm it's not just baconreader. I've even left a comment in your review section on Google Play to let people know the issue. I've been drowning in emails and bad reviews from HTC One m8 users about how my app no longer opens these past days. Can't believe this issue isn't fix it yet. Anyway sort comments by newest and look here. m8 users are not very happy with Android System Webview: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.webview&hl=en
EDIT: Wow thanks for the gold!!! :)
I respectfully disagree :)
> What's New in 4.1.0: >Revamp of how we handle various link formats: >- IMAGEs (.jpg, .png) - no animation, stored in image cache, shown in zoomable image viewer >- GIFs (.gif) - animated, now also stored in image cache, shown in custom gif viewer >- VIDEOs (.gifv, .mp4, .webm) - animated, not stored, shown in VideoView >- WEB PAGEs (.html) - just web content
Looks like it's the second latest update. if you are still using the same method but cleaned the UX up a bit I'm not complaining.
Ooo... you should let us know what you think about 1Weather, it's a weather app. A Cake Day present of advice. :)
Disclaimer, we also make it in house as a 1LouderApps app.
