Oh we can do that:

Ah yes, Send Me To Heaven, banned by Apple because they were worried about users sending $700+ devices up in the air to have them shatter on the pavement.
Google shrugs it off and still allows downloads.
I use this app for android. What it does is that the volume buttons only control media volume. So I can silence it before the video starts and not worry about it. I never change the ringer volume, I only change it to vibrate or mute when I need.
No, stories like these have been in the news for a little while. Like the little girl who "accidentally" ordered cookies and a dollhouse... and then TV news covering the story played the clip, resulting in purchases made in the homes of viewers with an Alexa. But the point of this is that most people don't want others (particularly large corporate entities or clandestine government agencies) listening in on their conversations.
+1 for KeePass. It's compatible with basically anything (though I'm currently having trouble getting auto-type to pass through to a Hyper-V VM), and has some QoL features that make it usable. It's not as nice as, say, 1Password browser integration, but auto-type with window context works quite well. Clients are available for all the major desktop and mobile OSes.
Does anyone know if Randal gets any kind of royalty fees for when xckd shows up in textbooks? The xkcd license only allows for redistribution for noncommercial uses. A textbook is very much commercial.
Here you go! In short, we won moderation back from the evil /u/soccer when they missed the 2-month posting deadline. The holocaust-denial and other links are removed from the side-bar, and balance has been restored to the ~~horse~~ subreddit.
Invading from the Ingress crowd. Hello fellow xkcd fans.
Basically, Ingress is exactly as he put it in the alt-text: "Foursquare with Space Noises." It's owned by Google, so naturally, it's Android-only for the time being. In a nutshell, it's an augmented reality, location-based, international game of green-versus-blue capture-the-flag.
It's in closed beta at the moment, but you're able to request an invite for it on the official website. You can also try to impress the developers on Google+ and Facebook with fanart (which doesn't even have to be relevant to the plot, it just has to be nice and shiny) and earn a code that way.
There's also an alternate-reality game going on simultaneously on The Niantic Project website that gets you in-game goodies and reveals the story about the game.
And yes, in the game, there are space noises.
I've installed Easy XKCD and set it as the default to open any xkcd links. Works like a charm, has a better interface than the mobile site. I think it might have been made by a redditor. But yeah, it's certainly annoying that the mobile site doesn't turn up anywhere unless you make it.

Oh man, I'd just print out a bunch of the final third, and buy some double-sided tape. every time he takes one down, just pop the next one you have up, with slightly more tape. Eventually you may have to get to something pretty strong...
visit the website in browser, and put an m in front of the link, like so:
xkcd.com/449/ --> m.xkcd.com/449/
Alternatively, Relay for Reddit supports XKCD links just fine.
I was thinking the same thing. SMBC, maybe?
EDIT: I believe I have found the graph this comic reminded me about. Kind of similar, but the bottom axis of that graph should probably say something along the lines of "% of task complete" instead of "task size".
The solution to this problem: http://stackexchange.com/
The Q&A remain alive there and are much more likely to be updated with relevant information and supplied with a good answer. And, you can always bump an old question up to the front page and/or alert the asker or answerers that you need more information.
Yes. It looks like the word tsunami has been gaining ground for the last 50 years, but 2004 was when tsunami became the dominating term.
These are becoming more popular in the UK. They often have proper plugs but USB on faceplates are definitely a thing. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LWK7AVC/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_JB1X2A64MK2JY1DAA72G?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
AutoHotKey would likely be able to handle that without issue. May be "overly complicated", but autohotkey is amazing. I use it for a number of hot keys for launching apps, folders, and various other things.
Relay does...

>none of us has a "direct IP"
You mean a static? Everybody has an IP address. Seen here. Then you'd just have to forward ports to something and uhh...
I dunno, I use this sometimes. Super easy. Forward port 80 to the box, drag and drop some files, take that home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you've got a stew going.
They're 70 cents each for most consumers.
If you're going to buy this many, you can get steep discounts. I found this manufacturer selling them at between 20 and 2cents each. Min order 10,000, and shipping not included. Shipping will run about ~$20-100 per cubic meter.

I'd say you could do the whole thing under $5k, just with a rough guess.
I'd be interested in this. I'm currently using xkcd Browser which is pretty full featured, but a little bit unstable and not very ascetically pleasing.
By my calculations, XKCD was pretty close:
Assuming 100% conversion efficiency from 'earth' into 'nanobots':
40% of the volume of earth in cubic microns: 4.3x10^38
Number of IPv6 addresses: 3.4 x 10^38
Size of each nanobot: 4.3 / 3.4 = 1.26 cubic microns
so 'a few cubic microns' is not far off
I checked Amazon. 1 can of Del Monte creamed corn is 1 pound, conveniently. It's $7.07 a can, for corn with 1 star reviews, so that comes to $28,280 for 4000 cans of creamed corn.
I'm using CLIP to basically search the parameters of BigGAN to make the image I want. CLIP is something made by OpenAI, where it identifies images about how close they are to a certain text, or it tries to identify the text of that image. It basically starts from a random BigGAN image, and then messes with the parameters until it ends up to something close to the text. (artbreeder.com has good examples of the parameters I'm talking about)
Channel.html files are usually Facebook API related... not sure why this one is all chinese characters, or even why XKCD needs one
I think they're referring to blockchains, which bitcoin popularized. They are a way to keep data (like financial transactions) in a way that's reliable but also decentralized. Specifically IPFS is using blockchains to try to solve the problem. Of course it is still experimental and time will show if blockchain based technology can solve or at least help the problem that Randall has presented to us.

Hi! I made an Android App the day the Bun Alert XKCD came out. You can download it here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.refect.bunalert
I am working on an improved version with iOS support. You can keep up to date here https://www.facebook.com/bunalertapp/
Been using xkcdViewer for the last 9ish years. Hasn't failed me yet!
Lets you tap a comic to view alt text, open links (on comics that link to something like a higher res map/image), browse by number (or random), search by title, or open the explainxkcd page for a given comic straight from the menu. Also has a favorites system.

Should be reasonably straightforward for someone who's been saying they need a programming project for months (yeah, I'm calling you out specifically) to build off and print a bracket for upcoming games!
A quick google seems like their API is friendly enough. https://www.waze.com/about/dev
My concern is monetizing it to a degree where it'd give a developer that's good enough to do it justice the incentive to go all the way through with it.
What that means for the security of people's travel plans and patterns could be a deterrent for use.
Additionally, I imagine a lot of people charmed by the concept wouldn't want to be responsible for a data breach in-practice.

For anyone that want a good editor, easy to use, looks pretty, but that can be very powerful, try Atom.
It's free, open source, made by the Github team. And of course it works nicely with any git project.
Gladwell writes for The New Yorker, and the articles are essentially pop-science. It's fun stuff, not rigorous, but I enjoy reading them (he's god a good TED talk too). Same with the other guys in the Alt text - Steven Levitt did Freakonomics and A.J. Jacobs will do things like live an entire year without breaking any of the rules of the bible, or read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica.

Indeed, with the size stated by bob it appears they would still not run out of address space. His calculation on the volume required in order to consume the whole earth and fill the address space at the same time results in a very small bot
Alternatively you could switch to the free open source xkcd Android client "Easy xkcd" which displays them flawlessly on it's own:

There’s a pretty good xkcd browser app for Android, it has a What If section, and I can confirm it has all the hover text.
You just inspired me to write an android version! You can find the source here: https://github.com/jayseejc/XKCD-Dating-Age-Calculator

I am not a lawyer, XKCDs licence basically sais 'tis fine with it as long as you give credit and don't outright sell or otherwise charge your derivative work. The problem here is figuring out if a buisness using it on an (internal) sign like this would constitute commercial use which is probably best discussed with a lawyer for the business' local court. Of course the lack of credit doesn't help much for this sign. Not that it resolves the legal issue but sometimes people find these comics reuploaded elswhere without information about the author or the licence so it isn't always done in malice. A proper business would have an employee do due dilligence figuring out what the rights are to an image they intend to use.
XKCD comics have been used on signs, notices and emails on all kinds of campuses or technical workplaces and I think that goes well with the spirit of XKCD.
nice!
two comments on the source:
KeePass Additional FAQ - Is storing the database file in a public place a security problem?
> A KeePass database is a regular file, which users can store wherever they want. KeePass does not require Internet/cloud access. Anyway, some users prefer to store their database file in a public place (such as a shared network drive, a webserver, a cloud storage like e.g. Dropbox, ...), in order to always have access to their database whenever an Internet connection is available. > > If you use a strong master key, storing the database file in a public place is not a problem.
Having looked into the matter, it appears that monkeys rarely eat bananas in the wild in the first place, as they don't have access to them.
Some zoos even exclude bananas from monkeys diet because they contain too much sugar.
So it appears that the whole 'monkeys like bananas' theme is a fabrication.
edit: my misconception probably stems from the myth (that Randall plays with in the mouse-over text) plus a documentation about Bonobos where at least one opened a provided banana 'from the other side'.
OpenSSL was basically filled with legacy code that should have been ripped to shreds years (maybe even a decade) ago. The OpenBSD guys made a fork and ripped out/rewrote a large portion of the bad code.
here are some of the reports on their work. Of note I recommend the First 30 days presentation. Goes into parts of the reasons why OpenSSL got the way it was.
If you're using Windows, first download Python from here, and then download the imaging library Pillow from here. After you have those installed, move the script to your Python directory (should be C:\Python), open a command prompt and type .\python.exe xkcd_downloader.py -h to see all of the options.
Zapier co-founder here; love seeing excitement like this. :) Shoot me an email sometime () I want to say thanks!
We have a relatively open platform anyone can add apps to. Notivo seems like it would be an awesome fit. Details here: https://zapier.com/developer
Either way, good luck with Notivo. The search widget on the homepage got me very excited.
As /u/blauster mentioned get Wifi Analyzer and see if there is an empty-ish spot in the spectrum that you can use.
Reduce the channel width from 40MHz to 20MHz and drop down the speed (no need to 300mbps speed if your ISP provides you with 50 ... it just clutters the spectrum with lost packets )
Depending on your house/apartment geometry and router placement you can even benefit from lowering the WiFi power, since signal reflection from walls can disrupt signal integrity. Tinker and find your perfect/best settings by pinging your router from your phone and looking at the packet drops.
And finally - if possible and your devices support 5GHz, get yourself a nice (not $20) router that supports 802.11ac - wider channel width, more channels overall (wider spectrum), less signal wall penetration because of the shorter wavelength hence less interference from neighbors.
This is what comes to mind, if someone has any other ides - please share :)
These two are both very good and each has its strengths. Let me know which you like more.

You have a hard time typing that word, don't you?
Typing class: sit your left fingers in proper typing positions (pinky on A, first finger on F). You can type S+E+R in a single legato by just moving 2 fingers up. SER. miSERably. Good.
For the web developers: he's using srcset to display different images dependant upon resolution & screensize. It's pretty nifty stuff. And like just about all nifty stuff in the web development world, it's not supported by IE.
Maybe, but lots of places just grab something off the internet, credit where they got it, and never actually discuss licensing with the copyright owner. Yeah, sometimes things are licensed under Creative Commons so there's no discussion needed, but a lot of times that's not the case.
There was a TED talk about flying cars from someone who's actually been designing it. These ones seem to be automatically controlled by computers, so "dangerous cagers" (what exactly does that phrase mean? non-native speaker here) aren't too much threat.
He says they're coming soon, but (iirc) doesn't mention a particular time frame. Looks very interesting though.

Nice, but two things:
That's all. Really well-done otherwise.
Oxford Dictionary's interpretation is that a vowel is any open vocal sound where the breath isn't partially obstructed, so any time it doesn't have the 'ya' sound it is a vowel.
OK so we can draw two conclusions from this exercise.
Here's a sketch of what I was thinking. Frontend isn't my strong suit, but I think you can do it with raw CSS.
Nesting breaks up, but that's kind of a necessary step to get deep explainer things.
You could make it work, as long as the casing of the plug is just decorative.
I've seen chargers that are a single cable that splits at the end into two+ different charging tips, like this.
Just encase the two tips in a plug shaped exterior so they're held firmly. As long as the two phones you charge are thin enough to not get in each others' way, I don't see why it wouldn't work.
We can even see two phones fitting into this spacing here, though the wiring is definitely different. :)

Oh, come on. Even a math nerd or geek should use a standard base 10 page numbering system. I'd even allow him to start on page 0, or perhaps have an introduction from pages -5 to 0, just to be clever.
Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! didn't have pages exclusively numbered with the Fibonacci sequence for shits and giggles.
I really like my TerraLux Lightstar 300:
http://www.amazon.com/TerraLUX-TLF-3002AA-BK-LightStar300-Aluminum-Flashlight/dp/B004VMWAKQ/
The only downside is that it doesn't have a true "low" setting (only 100 and 300 lumens), but that doesn't bother me much. Also, I like the wide beam and flood on it. That's more useful to me than a tight beam for long range.
November 24. A few people seem to have early copies though.
Try the android app WiFi Analyzer. This will show you where the most noise is, and what channels are the most heavily populated. Using that info you can pick a good spot for your router as well as change which channels you use. Some ISP-provided or especially bullshit routers might not have that functionality though.

Thomas the tank engine "Shed 17" for some real nightmare fuel.
If you are in the EU, the English version is available for preorder at e.g. Amazon Germany at https://www.amazon.de/-/en/dp/0525537112 (just a plain link, no affiliate stuff). I preordered it there to Finland.

Oh, I was confused for a moment, but it turns out both versions work, since reach can also mean "to pass or give (something to a person) with the outstretched hand".
I got our dog DNA tested one time. Was not impressed with the results. Obviously there was no way to validate them other than visually, but he just didn't look like anything but one (~12%) breed on his list.
Also, weird side note, I don't know that I've ever heard of a genetic risk factor for parvo. You can't just use the incidents/breeds documented because it is so prevalent in shelters and those have obvious breed biases (same with geographic biases). If someone has a citation for this, I'd love to see it though. I'm helping with a research program on canine parvo right now so it'd be really interesting to see.
Edit: I searched around a bit and found this paper and this paper. Unfortunately, I can't read either, but the abstracts claim pure breeds may be more susceptible. Their statistical methods weren't very clear as to how they controlled for breed related population variation, and the first paper had an absolutely abysmal survival rate with treatment (they had 64% instead of the expected 90+% with proper treatment - which makes me question the quality of their data a bit).
I'm quite skeptical of the conclusions of both although they did find overlapping breeds so maybe there's something there.
Minor correction: I managed to find a 1tb microsd card for only $32.99 here. As such, redoing the calculation, we get 32.99 * 25,000 which equals $824,750, or 0.8 million.
I know how to: calibre (which, by the way, does the one-click conversion to AZW/KFX.) I just haven't used e-readers for quite a while.
You want to boycott them, that's fine. Amazon is pretty terrible. I just don't understand the reasoning that others are that much better.
They stopped selling it I think. The Binary Heart one came back last year for a limited (maybe final) run before valentine's day on teespring.
Is this why the "Random" button is not working? I get linked to https://c.xkcd.com/random/comic/ and get ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED
Normal site works as expected.
[edit] Did a little digging and c.xkcd.com resolves to 107.6.98.34 This IP is located in Texas and seems to be down (at least for europe). Same for c2.xkcd.com
[edit2] Ok it is down for everyone, not just for europe according to http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/c.xkcd.com.html
I never understood why I would want it.
I have one account.
I don't care to see how many upvotes/downvotes someone has.
I don't need to hide my username.
Don't care to save comments.
I have AutoPatchWork - so I don't need "Never Ending Reddit"
Style Tweaks - I made all links red with opera, so they would stand out - don't need any other changes
I usually only browse the frontpage, r/nba, r/soccer - so no real use for a subreddit manager.
I went down the features list and that's the features I really don't seem to need. I don't see the point of it if it only has a few things I would use. The extension I use to view images works everywhere and not just reddit.
Do you use Disconnect by any chance? you would need to whitelist xkcd.com to let the extension work, since it relies on the Reddit API (which is considered as a "Social" request).
Hold on let me check...

It doesn't really work, not without some tinkering. A lot of stuff seem really hard-coded (e.g. it's only working for 3.3 and 3.4, and it files for 3.3 and 3.4, 64-bit and 32-bit in all installations, i.e. in my 3.5 64 bit installation I have files for 3.3 32-bit, 3.3 64-bit, 3.4 32-bit and 3.4 64-bit, but none for 3.5 64 bit :))
Still, the whole project is just about abandoned. The last time there was any kind of commit was almost two years ago. The author also doesn't seem to understand how subversion is supposed to work. Why not use cx_freeze instead?
Also, I think with Python 3.5 you can run a zip file directly, but I haven't seen any freezing program (such as cx-freeze, pyinstaller or py2exe) that uses that feature.
Anyway, you may as well download Python 3.4 instead. Personally I've only just about scraped the surface of the new 3.5 features, so I don't think there's going to be a problem.
I don't think we can just ignore Sue's turns. We know that Bob rolled a six before her, but the fact that she is playing makes it less likely that Bob would have gotten the six later, since then it would have been unlikelier that Sue hasn't still scored a six.
