Thanks for the nice app! I've been using xkcd Browser for years now, and while it's very good feature-wise, yours is a welcome change from that holo clutter.
I'll point out first things I've noticed, good and bad:
1 Really smooth! I like the zoom in-and-out material animations, though the image, and especially the text 'jumps' when settling into their places. Not a big deal, but breaks the experience a bit.
2 As I'm sure you know, every xkcd comic has a number (the last one "Hemingway" is #1540, for instance); you should put that somewhere. It's nice for reference. Then maybe in time, an option to directly go to a specific comic number... Also you should give credit to explainxkcd.com instead of just saying "Explanation".
3 I'd prefer a 'favorites' option and 'star this' FAB instead of 'share'. xkcd Browser has this, though what I don't like about its implementation is that it doesn't save those preferences to the cloud so you lose it every time you get a new device or flash a new ROM etc. A favorites option with cloud-backup would definitely be my biggest request.
4 Put the 'shuffle' button on every page so we don't have to go back to the homepage to shuffle again?
5 Swipe left-and-right to browse previous and next comics, so we don't have to go back to the homepage to see them?
6 Some time in the future: "New xkcd comic available" notification?
7 Right now it crashes on me if I try to rotate my phone into landscape, though I don't have your latest update yet, and I'm on M Preview on Nexus 6...
Again, thanks for the app. I'm keeping it :)
There's a mobile version of the site you can use, or on android there's the xkcd reader: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
You can also search for the comic being posted to r/xkcd
I'd be interested in this. I'm currently using xkcd Browser which is pretty full featured, but a little bit unstable and not very ascetically pleasing.
ok so its part of the XKCD browser but on my android phone its two different apps for whatever reason anyways in the upper left corner change it to what-if and enjoy :)
android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd&hl=en
ios: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xkcd/id303688284?mt=8
FYI idk anything about the iphone app so good luck
There’s a pretty good xkcd browser app for Android, it has a What If section, and I can confirm it has all the hover text.
I didn't know about the mobile site (thanks /u/grottenholm), but I can alternatively recommend this Android app. There's also one by the same developer for what if.
I downloaded xkcd browser (Android) and spent a few weeks going through and reading them all. I check for new comics daily. Alternatively you can go to the xkcd site and click First" and start reading.
I think the key is that an app shouldn't just be the website. It should be more easy to use than the website is when it's viewed on mobile - a good example is this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
Website that the app covers is xkcd.com
xkcd Browser is still excellent, although the UI is looking a little dated at this point. Of course it only works for xkcd (including What If? and Explain), not for all webcomics, but if you only need xkcd it's perfect. (I'm still holding out for a good Dinosaur Comics app!)
I don't remember. But why can't you use the wiki on your tablet? It works fine on my phone.
I use this app, which has a button to automatically take you there.
XKCD Browser - Read all "XKCD" and "What-if" comic with 'alt-text'. It also links them with explainxkcd.com. Also has offline mode and it's Ad-free.
edit:spelling mistake
Absolutely love this one, you can even save every comic to your storage for offline viewing.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
XKCD Browser lets you download comics and is extremely fast, I've been using it for years
There is a open source app... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
Whats wrong with this one? Has all the features you listed...
Actually there is already an app for that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
It let's you download all xkcd for offline viewing.
Someone did the exact same thing a few weeks back, with explanations also.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
This is the one I have. It notifies me of any new post.
Future update: What if support like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
It works fine in this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floern.xkcd
