Indeed! In 1967 they were attacked by four neighboring countries. Four against one and it took them all of six days to send them back home with their proverbial tails between their legs. One of many sources
He also hated being called Teddy.
My favorite president by far.
If you haven't read this: check out The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt
"In the shadow of a redoubt near the river, the articles of surrender were signed at eleven A.M. on October 19. At two P.M. the French and American troops lined up on opposite sides of a lane stretching a half mile long. Baron von Closen noted the contrast between the "splendor" of the French soldiers, with their dress swords and polished boots, and the Americans "clad in small jackets of white cloth, dirty and ragged, and a number of them . . . almost barefoot." Led by drummers beating a somber march, thousands of defeated British and Hessian soldiers trudged heavily between the allied columns, their colors tightly folded. As they ran this gauntlet, they had to pass by every allied soldier. Legends claims that British fifes and drums played "The World Turned Upside Down." In another reminder of allied revenge for Charleston, General Benjamin Lincoln, who had been refused the honors of war there, led the procession. Even at the end the British evinced a petty, spiteful attitude towards the Americans, gazing only at the French soldiers until Lafayette prodded the band to strike up "Yankee Doodle," forcing the conquered army to acknowledge the hated Americans. At the end of the line, the British soldiers emerged into an open field, where they tossed their weapons contemptuously onto a stockpile, trying to smash them. Then they filed back past the double column of victors. The entire wonder of the American Revolution was visible for all to see. It wasn't the well-dressed French Army who were the true victors of the day, but the weather-beaten, half-clad American troops."

FUN FACT: THAT'S NOT A WIG.
No guys I'm serious. Washington never wore a wig. The style you see is actually quite common among military men at the time. His hair was grown to shoulder length, and pulled firmly back. His hair would then be either braided, wrapped with a ribbon, or in some cases Washington would put it into a small silk bag. He then would take the sides and roll them a bit to fluff them out. The rolls would stay because of all the pommade people at the time would use, and it would then be set with powder.

Well, I do have a shirt with that design on Amazon. I just didn't share the link because I didn't want to spam this sub - I just wanted to pay homage to such an awesome event.

After leaving office, he led a dangerous expedition into the uncharted Amazon to find and map one of the sources of the Amazon river. It's an amazing story, and very well told: The River of Doubt.
>Among the top books chosen, Mattis recommended “No True Glory” by Bing West, “Battle Ready” by Tom Clancy, Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War,” ten of the most difficult books to read of all time, and The Bible. Marines, however, were only assigned four coloring books.
It's satire? Really?
Reminds me of this excerpt from the sci-fi novel by John Ringo, Gust Front.
Read from the top of the page down the break, trust me...
"If I determine the enemy's disposition of forces while I have no perceptible form, I can concentrate my forces while the enemy is fragmented. The pinnacle of military deployment approaches the formless: if it is formless, then even the deepest spy cannot discern it nor the wise make plans against it."
-- Sun Tzu, "The Art of War"
It's a misattributed quote.
"It has been declared this attribution is 'unsubstantiated and almost certainly bogus, even though it has been repeated thousands of times in various Internet postings. There is no record of the commander in chief of Japan’s wartime fleet ever saying it.', according to Brooks Jackson in 'Misquoting Yamamoto' at Factcheck.org (11 May 2009)"
Yeah. When I was in college, I took an American military history class and we read this book. If I remember correctly, most people on both sides were just fighting to protect their home or to defend those principles you mentioned. It was really the politicians who ranted and raved about slavery and states rights.
This one is a closer reproduction.
I'm not trying to throw John McCain under the bus. But the votes don't lie. Democrats overwhelming supported the holiday, Republicans were mixed. Southern states used to celebrate Robert E. Lee Day instead of the federal holiday. Many cities (in Republican states) refuse to call it MLK Day, instead calling it 'Great Americans Day.'
If combining MLK Day with a celebration of the traitor Robert E. Lee isn't enough to show contempt for Dr. King, what is enough?
America, Fuck Yeah!
May I suggest that once this one wears out, you replace it with a tangle free flagpole and grommeted flag.
I don't have to constantly untangle my flag and the Annin Tough-Tex flag has stood up for two years so far (albeit a bit faded). Annin flags are also made right here in 'Murica.
Yeah, seems like a lot of people want there to be no evidence, so they say there isn't any. Even the President Elect said the hack was probably Russia. Saying there is no evidence does not make evidence disappear.
> All in all I like the fact that many people here care about the sings, it makes traffic safer for everyone. obeying the sign is kind of a nice, respectful gesture from everyone to everyone. If you're not in a hurry a few extra minutes waiting for the light to turn green will not kill you.
All of the things you said are perfectly sensible / rationale / respectable. And yet I would still absolutely hate living somewhere where this is the societal norm.
I'm not trying to take a dump on your culture or anything, it's just your culture, not mine. Americans are more individualistic and less socially conscious than Northern Europeans.
There are pluses and minuses to this, and I'm honestly not suggesting that you or anyone else should change.
But I don't think it's an accident that it was an American, not a German (or Austrian) who came up with the phrase "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission". But an American, shout out to Rear Admiral Grace Hooper
It's Sync for Reddit.
I'm a bit of an Android fangirl, so I'm probably not the best to ask, but I've never really liked how iOS looks. Android looked horrific back in the Honeycomb days, but the fairly recent Material Design update, imo, makes it look very pretty, and way better than iOS.
New York Times, avaliable here. Lots of types and measures of it and I'm unsure which this is, I hate to say. The peak was in 2009 at 9.3% according to that article, though.
A good way to think of it is in terms of car companies. Fiat (Italian) owns Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep. Would you say Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep are Italian cars?

Disagreeing with someone or not liking them does not mean they do not deserve your respect. Go read Sun Tzu's The Art of War, some of the points in the book are timeless and applicable beyond the theater of war. Most specifically in this context, the parts about not underestimating your opponent.
I live about 30 minutes from 'Muricas most visited national park. Lots of folks around here drive those intimidatingly big vehicles, and every time I hit the trails, all I notice is purple mountains majesty and the sweet, sweet scent of FREEDOM on the mountain air.

I didn't compare alcohol or cigarettes to pot so why are you? You stated crack. The reason crack isn't allowed is because it is highly, highly addictive, can cause harm to others and yourself, and there is no potential benefits from it any way.
Cigarettes you are at least in control of your body and they have a calming effect on people (although I don't smoke cigs).
Alcohol also has a medicinal effect if used in moderation. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/alcohol/art-20044551
Not saying people choose to drink alcohol for health reasons, but if it is done responsibly then there is no problem. That's why you can't drink and drive you dingus.
Crack is going to be highly addictive from the start and dangerous to consumers and people around them. It is illegal for the danger alone. I don't know how you can put the two on the same pedestal and think you have a rational argument, because you do not.
Uhh, my best recommendation would be things like Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series on the Punic Wars. He really is a good story teller.
here's most of those podcasts streaming for free, but I pay for mine, Dan Carlin is worth paying for
Quite a lot, actually, or cheaper!
Over the past few months, some gas stations have already engaged in town-wide "gas wars" to see how cheaply they can sell gas to compete against their local rival gas stations.

>Her pipes are bad. “When it’s this cold, water freezes everywhere including pipes which may cause a rupture,” English Russia reported. “To prevent this, they just don’t supply almost 60 percent of the cabins with water (neither in winter nor in summer). The situation with latrines is just as bad. The ship has over 50 latrines but half of them are closed.”
>Almost 2,000 men. Twenty-five latrines. Do the math. Training and morale are so poor that in 2009 Admiral Kuznetsov sailors apparently botched an at-sea refueling, spilling hundreds of tons of fuel into the Irish Sea, pictured at left.
I got the Constitution from Amazon. And no, the hat did not come with it, someone gave me it at some public support thing they were doing near where I live and I thought it would bring the picture together.
I'm reading George Washington's biography right now. The descriptions of the horrible conditions of the Continental Army are matched only by the descriptions of their astounding achievements.
They didn't have enough food, clothing, guns, ammunition or training. Up to a quarter of them were sick most of the time and their enlistments kept expiring, so there was major churn. If you didn't love America enough already, just read Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow and you will cry tears of pride.
You're breaking a cardinal rule of basic logic: don't create a generalization out of a single example. To say all Muslims are like Bin Laden is straight ignorant. If you want an example of a wonderful Muslim, read The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

I would also HIGHLY recommend Edmund Morris' Biographies of Teddy Roosevelt. I'm halfway through "Rex" now, having finished "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" a few months ago. "Rise" will make you want to go out, kill hundreds of animals, eliminate crime in a major city, and then go win the medal of honor.
Its not even an Islamic word. Its origin Latin/French stemming from Catholic/Christian rhetoric. Its not Arabic, or commonly used by muslims. They would more likely use "Kafir”.
It's top definition is "one who is not a Christian or who opposes Christianity"
The secondary definition is "an unbeliever with respect to a particular religion" or "one who acknowledges no religious belief"
I found on pretty close to it. Sorry I couldn't find the exact. :/ Wallet

This was almost 10 years ago, so I may be a little off with the details. The company I dealt with from Facebook was in El Salvador. They were a pleasure to deal with. They made the jacket, belt, and pants/shirt singlet. I want to say this all ran me nearly $300. The hat and glasses I made myself, and the boots came from amazon. I could be confusing that $300 with the total cost of the costume, because my memory is garbage.

Listen here Super Sport, Trump's a businessman, his policies were opening offers to start negotiation. You don't list a car for what you'll settle for. You highball the shit out of that bitch so when the buyer talks you down he feels good about himself. Then, once an agreement has been reached, you look that man in his eye, shake his hand and say "pleasure doing business with you"
This man ran his campaign like The Art of War and he's about to run the office like The Art of the Deal. Try to keep up, I want you to MAGA too!
That was a really great series. i learned a lot and am now reading The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris. Very good.
I think a lot of Teddy's greatness was down to the greatness of his father who was quite an evolved human being. Both of them were incredible, warm and loving fathers.
I recommend Akhil Reed Amar, one of the foremost scholars on the Constitution. Along with Publius, he gives a lot of insights into how the Founders' logic and vision.
There's actually an interesting book called What Soldiers Do that deals with the American GIs in France. It's definitely an interesting read.

> "I don't think 'da man wit the chips' was throwing it back at police. I think he was throwing it away from him and kids he was standing near," said the man, who goes by the Twitter name @eyeFLOODpanties.
> The Source confirmed on Friday that it was, indeed, @eyeFLOODpanties in the now-iconic photo, which was taken by the St. Louis Post Dispatch's Robert Cohen.

Also, I'm curious as to how you think a tear gas canister operates. You do realize it has a lit fuse, right?

The industrial revolution had already kicked in. It was the North who lobbied for protective tariffs at the detriment of the South. The North used the South for its resources, and the South used the North for shipping and manufacture. Over time though the North continued to pressure the entire Nation into it's own vision of a national system, which the South deeply did not want. Here is an article that touches on what you assert, and refutes it more or less. An interesting excerpt from that article says that the CSA would have been the fourth wealthiest nation in the world, not an economy easily tanked.
I'm sorry you are so filled with hate for myself and my ancestors, despite them being French Canadian and in Canada at the time. However, the revisionist history is skewed, but in the way you believe it. I challenge you to read this. It is but one article of many here that touch on the Civil War, especially Ante Bellum North and South. The specific article I linked to you is specific about slavery during the Civil War, but all are good, and starting at the beginning also starts at the beginning so to speak.
Also, reconstruction was never going to be successful as long as Thaddeus Stevens was leading the charge. He hated the South and did everything he could to stop Lincoln's and Johnson's idea for reconstruction, going so far as to impeach Johnson and mollify his influence as President.
No is claiming slavery was not a major issue, but it was definitely more complex than that, and as far as secession documents go, it isn't like every state in the CSA acted in accord with the others and left at the same time. Actually, Virginia and other states stayed with the Union initially because that would ensure they could keep there slaves.
Edit: Here is another great article on the shifting importance of slavery and the Civil War. http://www.etymonline.com/cw/history.htm

I don't need to read. I grew up listening to the stories of a Cuban immigrant in person.
You can read Ramon Machado's story here:

Oddly enough, he just made the trip home for the first time in 60 years. I'm halfway convinced that he's there finishing what he started in the 60's... and spitting on Castro's grave.
i appreciate your thorough answer. If it will be allowed, i'd like to better explain my answer. I think i might have buried my point. There is an anecdotal story from the Korean War involving a depleted squad holding a trench section. During the night they are reinforced by a replacement soldier. During their respective watches, one of the soldiers offers the new guy a cup of coffee from their mess kit. New guy refuses and says he doesn't want any trouble as he is black. The Sarge leans over and asks the black soldier why they are in Korea. "To fight the Godless Communists." If they come over that hill, what are you going to do? "Shoot 'em, sergeant." If i say we gotta stay here? "I'll stay here." If I say we gotta go? "I'll follow you, sergeant." Then i don't care if you are white, black, blue or green, you can drink from my canteen. (<em>No Bugles, No Drums</em>)
The point the veteran was making to author/editor was that a soldiers' value is in their willingness follow orders and fight, whatever his skin color was meaningless. The greater context is that the integration was long over due. There was no sound reason for the segregation, a white man was no better soldier than a black man.
I'm inclined to agree in this utilitarian perspective. I personally don't care about the demographics of our armed forces. They have my respect for volunteering to put life and limb on the line for the American values and people. My concerns are that they are provided with best resources to discharge that duty to their utmost ability then be given their due as they have earned for their service.
That a recruiting ad would put so much emphasis on what i see as superflous details is what unsettles me. I fear it is indicative of losing the forest for the leaves. A failure that would see America badly hurt and quite a many of those servicemembers dead.
Now that the original run on masks is subsiding, you can get one of those "doctor masks" (the paper kind) for less than $1 each. Although distance is better, not everyone can keep >6 feet away at all times from everyone.

On the other side, The Art of War (Sun Tzu), The Book of Five Rings (Musashi), On War (Clausewitz), Mein Kampf (not for everyone, but provides great insight into Hitler and manipulation of populist ideals), On Killing (Grossman), The Cambridge History of Warfare (Parker), Obama's Wars (Woodward), Strategic Studies: A Reader (Mahnken), Counterinsurgency Warfare (Galula), Inside Terrorism (Hoffman), Waging Insurgent Warfare (Jones), and The Origins of Totalitarianism (Arendt).
That is a very solid start, though not necessarily in that order.
Enemies Foreign and Domestic by Matt Bracken is a good (if maybe a touch dated) fictional work with some very real lessons throughout the series (it's three books) that are super entertaining to read.

I highly recommend to all you patriots the book (the audiobook is amazing) George Washington: A Life. It's a big read and it's great. It goes into a lot of detail on his relationship with Lafayette and our Ricky relationship with France during the revolution.
Yes please. Am reading The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt right now. I'm convinced there was no badder American President. This, followed by this speech:
>Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose. But fortunately I had my manuscript, so you see I was going to make a long speech, and there is a bullet - there is where the bullet went through - and it probably saved me from it going into my heart. The bullet is in me now, so that I cannot make a very long speech, but I will try my best.
I had a series of books as a kid that told stories about famous/influential peoople (ValueTales is what they were called). One of them was about Terry Fox; I always thought his story was the best of them, but found it weird that not really anybody else knew about him (I'm American).
Edit: Looks like there is one for sale on amazon.
Sarah Vowell is an amazing author who writes very readable books about early American history:
https://www.amazon.com/Sarah-Vowell/e/B001ILFO7E
One you might find interesting is <strong>Lafeytte in the Somewhat United States</strong>
I have read all three of Edmund Morris's biographies on TR, totaling over 2000 pages of Teddy Roosevelt's life. I also teach history. I doubt you can say the same. Here, do some reading before you embarrass yourself anymore.
If you think TR is one of the worst presidents in US history, you have a lot to learn, and quite frankly, are delusional.
there's actually an amazing book on this subject entitled <em>Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II</em> by Keith Lowe.
it details how the war didn't end with VE day; how it continued for years afterwards. rather than reconstruction and rehabilitation in the immediate post-war years, europe descended into mere anarchy, with chaos and violence everywhere, and groups using these conditions to settle 'old scores'. vengeance, displacements, moral disintegration, rape, torture, civil wars, and yes, a resurgence of anti-semitism and a re-opening of the camps.
it was only the marshall plan that brought stability to a region that was ripe for revolution and soviet takeover.
this is an important book, and i recommend it every chance i get, but it is not for the faint of heart: it is terrifying. but the fact is the europe, rather than enjoying a robust economy, would still be digging out from under the rubble today without the americans.
sometimes i indulge myself by wondering if we did the right thing.
If you're interested, give this a read: http://www.amazon.com/Refuting-ISIS-Religious-Ideological-Foundations/dp/1908224126
It's called refuting Isis and it methodically analyzes and picks apart all of the ideologies of Isis and similar militant groups. It goes into detail and explains how ultimately anti-Islamic every single thing they do is. Quick read, less than 100 pages.
I'd recommend The Adams-Jefferson Letters edited by Lester J. Cappon. There are prefaces and footnotes for each letter that help you understand what they're talking about and they (the editor's additions) aren't particularly difficult to get through. It also includes correspondence between Abigail Adams and Jefferson. She and Jefferson were good friends as well but ceased contact during the Jefferson-Adams feud, renewing it a few years before her death.
I would also like to point out that many of the letters are available online for free through Wikipedia and Google Books. Buying Cappon provides you with commentary and context; it's definitely worth it, though.
For everyone commenting about the state of California now, /u/baseacegoku is referring to the fact that we had almost no military defenses on the West Coast at the time of Pearl Harbor. Those that were there were ill-equipped, undertrained, and very short on supplies. Esteemed Historian John Keegan, writing in his book Six Armies in Normandy, notes this by basically saying the Japanese could have invaded, waited a very brief time to let the military bases use up their small amount of ammo, and then push forward almost without resistance from the military. Private gun ownership was not what /u/baseacegoku was referring to if I understand it correctly.
I highly recommend this book.
