The "golden rules" have been working out pretty well for me (A2 Spanish): https://www.pimsleurunlimited.com/Unlimited-UsersGuide.pdf
I'm a few lessons away from completing Spanish I. On the lessons where I struggle, I'll repeat them the next day until I'm getting close to 80% correct, and then move on. The lessons have some overlap, so getting 80% and pushing forward makes sense to me. Their online resources are also fairly helpful (flash cards, reading, quizzes), though I don't use them all that often.
I'm not doing much writing other than "typing" in Duolingo at the moment. I treat those rules as guidelines - use whatever resources or exercises that you find useful for your learning style, be it writing, reading, watching, listening, etc.
