I've been using Scrivener for Windows (Beta) lately, along with the Mac version with Dropbox sharing when I feel the need to write on my Macbook instead of my PC.
Prior to that I was organising everything in .txt files and Q10, a full-screen 'distraction free' word processor. I prefer Scrivener because it offers me more organisational functionality though, and I've made quite a bit of use so far.
I used to use Q10 http://www.baara.com/q10/ (sorry, windows only) but I'm not sure about what others are using on what platforms.
I'd recommend abiword for *nix, not sure what to recommend for Mac.
You could try Q10
It's a very simple writing tool. Like a full screen word processor with minimal interface. Press CTRL+P to bring up settings. You can change background and text colour. There is also an info bar that counts your words as you type. You can have this on the bottom or the top and again have this whatever colour you want.
It's a very small program. Can be installed directly or even used on a pen drive. You can also get one with a spell check.
Download from here
>I can't keep making the characters say something like "Well I'm just a simpleton who doesn't know how this works."
I dunno man, that's worked pretty well for Denzel Washington.
I really love these interviews. They're crazy inspiring and I get a weird enjoyment out of learning things about people.
Also, that Scab story sounds pretty fucking cool. Even the angel wings bit.
Also also, give Q10 a try for a writing program. Heard about it through /u/BloodworthOOC. It's super simple and takes up the entire screen, kinda cool.
If you're on Windows you could also try yWriter It's similar in scope but not as featureful as Scrivener. Also free.
Page Four may also be worth a look.
I've personally used just about everything and settled on Scrivener. Been using it since the first Mac beta. To me it felt the most featureful for my needs. I really loved pounding away at Q10 but I felt that I wanted to have more control over my work as a whole as well as keep everything necessary, research, notes, etc., in a single file so it's all together. And Scrivener has the full-screen distraction free editor which is what I loved about Q10.
Q10. It's a full-screen word processor. It totally minimizes distractions because I can only focus on what I'm supposed to be writing, not anything else in my toolbar.
It's great for starting essays, fighting writer's block, and powering through creative writing projects.
I like Q10. It's bare-bones but very easily customized, good timer and color options etc. You can alter the progress display - word, page, line, character count etc, and vary things like words per page (default is 250). I haven't used many writing programs so I'm not sure whether or not it's standard. It also has the optional typewriter noise if you like that sort of thing.
I used to use JDarkroom, which is basically a windows port of a popular mac program that was recommended to me, but Q10 is much better. I don't think there's any internal documentation, it's all on the site so be sure to check it out.
Personally, I like rum because it mixes quite well with tea. In fact, in Germany that was more or less common at one time, to drink tea with a shot of rum on a cold day. And it also mixes well with cola, coconut milk, and lots of other things.
Whiskey is also quite nice, especially for cola. This might sound like a drink a lot, but I don't maybe once or twice a week, but I enjoy my alcohol, too, so I thought I would post in commiseration!
I use Q10 when I want the type-writey sound. It's a very light program (I keep it on my USB stick), and it has word count capabilities and timers with alarms. It also fills up the screen, so you have the feeling that you can only write and do nothing else. And it's free, of course Here's the link if anyone is interested: http://www.baara.com/q10/
mmmmm good one on the sound. Yep, i like it a lot the click clack tick sounds.
Years ago i use a app called "q10" that have sound when you write. Beautiful clikyti tackity.
This:
Hi all.
Im new to python (and to program). And i would like to do a WordProcessor, something like Q10 ( http://www.baara.com/q10/ ). that, as you can see, have a "elementary" GUI.
That kind of "for writers".
What would you think im gonna need to learn?? What library it will be good to use (if any is appropriate.).
(im just starting, and making little "stupid" programs (in the other hand challenge for me), and want to do in the middle this word processor)
Thanks to all
(i dont speak english).
Like a full screen word processor with a black background and green text? There are several programs out there that do that.
Q10 (Windows only): http://www.baara.com/q10/
FocusWriter (Windows/Mac/Linux): http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/
Both free. You'll just have to set your colors in the options.
Text writer Q10 actually has an audible *click* sound, but it's not as obnoxious as the one in the video. Just a simple click sound :)
I need that in my life now... ^(and with life I mean my IDEs)
Very simple one here - Q10 http://www.baara.com/q10/
Distraction free writing program. It opens fullscreen, and saves into a txt file. It's tiny, self-contained, and portable. You could put it on a flashdrive or Dropbox. If you need to focus on writing something, this works wonders.
Even though I use a Mac now, I'm still a huge fan of Q10. It hasn't been updated in years but it is so feature-LESS that it probably doesn't need to be updated that often. It was the first program that I found that offered a full-screen distraction-free writing environment.
I prefer to use full-screen word processors like Q10 and ZenWriter. I've been using Q10 for years, it's very basic and comes with a spellchecker. ZenWriter has the option to add music or background, but I find that can be distracting at times. Both have a word count at the bottom of the screen, and the appearance of the program can be changed which I find helps with creating and establishing a certain mood while I'm writing. I've never been a big fan of MS Word.
If you need help with distractions I recommend Q10 It takes a little learning to pick up all of the shortcuts, but it's minimal and I find it very easy to tune the world out and just write with it.
I don't have much of a hardware preference, but I'm significantly more productive with distraction free writing programs like Q10 for Windows or iA Writer for Mac.
Q10 is nice because its portable (no installation required) and provides some basic configuration options so you can pick a font you like and colors that keep you in the zone. Outside of those small tweaks, the only thing you can really do with the program is up and write something. It also has optional typewriter sound effects. I find that the aural tik-tik-tik in the background helps me set the pace and keeps the words flowing.
iA Writer is nice because it just is. One article I read described by comparing it to Starbucks. Word and similar programs are like your office; a nice place designed around getting stuff done, but it's filled with doodads and switches you can easily spend all day customizing. iA Writer like Starbucks; it's the place you go when you want to get some stuff done. You've got the most basic requirements, your intent, and nothing else to stand in the way of completing your goal. Starbucks just sits there providing you with a place to get your work done. iA Writer does basically the same thing.
Q10 is a great program if you want nothing else on your screen except your writing. It is minimalist and lets you block out any distractions - and its FREE!
