Rocket Chat is pretty powerful but more of a slack competitor. Apart from the weirdness on mobile push notifications I like it a lot!
Matrix seems to be quite powerful at letting anything talk to anything, but I personally haven't gotten that setup yet. While it seems it really shines as a middle layer in communications, it does very much have it's own communication protocol as well. Quite popular in this community.
https://revolt.chat/ Is a new one in my book, it's 100% not ready for prime time (no apps or selfhosting yet--but they're both on the timeline). But it's specifically marketed as a discord competitor.
Honestly, i have used discord before and it is exactly the kind of thing i want. I understand exactly what you mean. I am just kinda looking for a open source/Free Software alternative.
Last week i asked in r/selfhosted if anyone has used Revolt(open source discord) and basically nobody responded.
Just in case you are interested, https://github.com/revoltchat Their website is https://revolt.chat Seems very promising, but i see nobody using it. I'll wait until it is not in beta anymore.
You should be able to just go to the website and join the Public Beta? Before that, it was a Closed Beta that required invitations but I'm pretty sure just about anyone can get an account now no problem.
Guilded is probably the best mix of active and similar to Discord, but their clients are slow and missing a lot of features Discord has.
Matrix is far more popular and you're not locked into one client since it's just a protocol. Also, sponsoring doesn't mean anything in regards to leaning one way or another.
There's also Revolt, which is an open source discord clone that's gaining a small userbase. I'd personally recommend one of the later 2.
Hopefully I don't start any more as I have plenty of projects on the go that are already way too much. Maybe I should take on something more manageable but that's no fun 😅 the latest thing I've started and know I'll never finish is a client for Revolt
Hi one of the revolt developers here, The public instance running on https://revolt.chat is free for anyone to make an account on and use and multiple people from the community have selfhosted there own instances as well.
The pros is that revolt works very well out of the box, the cons are that its not federated or similar so you cannot access other instances similar to how matrix works.
Take a look at https://revolt.chat
The development team is trying to make it as similar, but more feature rich than Discord. Although they're not planning federation which is a drawback (although it is open source, so if we can get some people together to add it, then I don't see an issue)
I understand why you'd use Tidal, music streaming is really convenient. I stream music with private YouTube clients but it doesn't feel like enough, I miss Spotify.
I also use Discord, hopefully Revolt matures because it feels like the first viable alternative. And yea, I tried Matrix for a while and it doesn't feel that good to use. I don't think it's really possible to persuade non-techy people onto it yet.
I also use Windows right now for gaming, but I think I'll mostly be able to switch to Linux for gaming soon. Proton is getting pretty good, would recommend! I also use Linux for all my productivity stuff; I'm lucky that all the apps I have to use work.
Part of why I was evaluating Keycloak is it can be self maintaining. I was looking to set up some related websites with common logins across them, and having Matrix (or another chat system - I'm still evaluating) was one of the services.
Anyway, Keycloak allows for self registration, users changing their profiles and setting their passwords etc, without needing admin involvement. I don't know if it does the password reminder thing (haven't got that far.)
But... if you're already using Active Directory in your organization, then the other option is just to hook Synapse directly into that. If you're using Office 365's version, then similarly you can either use LDAP to get credentials, or use Office 365's oAuth2 system. This all assumes you want a 1<>1 relationship between users on Matrix and people in your Active Directory directory. But essentially that's something you can set up and never have to worry about again, once it's set up it's set up and everyone has automatic access and knows their password without you doing anything.
One other possibility: it's at an early stage of development, but there's a pretty simple to set up/no admin needed (I can't even find out how you get admin credentials) Discord-like system out there called Revolt. It works, but some features like reactions are still pending. I mention it because you specifically mentioned Discord. I think it's at too early a stage of development to be comfortable with it, but it's progressing well so far.
Just support open source alternatives! :)
*cough* revolt.chat *cough*
I can understand free servers etc. is cool and all (specially when you are young and financially capped) but having your own selfhosted server gives you so much more power.
