I've used Forge in the past but 20$ a month is way too expensive. At the moment I'm using https://runcloud.io since it has the same features for 10$ a month. The only thing I needed to do was to create a .env file.
At the moment I'm working on my own server management tool because I think it's more secure to store ssh keys on a European server. It will take a while for me to finish it.
I was just testing different solutions the other week. I've tested multiple solution but end up using RunCloud.io. Feature wise, much more than forge can offer. It give a loud bang for your bucks. Give it a try if you want.
p/s: I know this is a bit shameless plug, but here's my referral link https://runcloud.io/r/1345JjQP5KQX
Runcloud.io is a server managment control panel. Siteground is a traditional hosting company. Big difference.
Runcloud dont give you a vps or hosting space. they just manage your already existing VPS which you purchased from any cloud vps provider they support.
(further reading)
Siteground let you sign up and purchase hosting space (shared hosting or a vps) and you manage any of these through siteground panel.
But my opinion on this is that the most effiecint way to manage a linux web server for non technical people or digital nomads who just do have the time.
Also a little knowledge about web technologies & linux would be a huge kickstart (atleast you would know what you doing when managing through managing server managment panels)
Runcloud free plan does the job in the sense that you can easily install web apps and Runcloud itself takes care of security. However you are missing out on more advance features that complete the experience so if you are not too bothered by that, then why not, give Runcloud.io a go. I suggest you try the premium trial and then revert to free plan .
If Runcloud doesn't tickle your fancy then there are many other hosting panels that you can use. If you are really inclined to go the free route, then there are panels like VestaCP and CentOs web Panel.
But I would like to put a warning on VestaCp that there was a security bug although that has been fixed. Its very solid though!
Kinsta is a fantastic service and is very polished. You are paying a premium for a website with 2000 visitors per month .
Here are few options:
-Stay with Kinsta
-Cloudways have pretty decently priced plans for VPS
-Use Digital Ocean + Runcloud.io
Persoanlly, I wouldnt go with shared hosting as I haven't found it suitable for me.
I have used both. I liked Cloudways at the start but I started to find resource pinching and the step up got costly, and their pricing now is something I do not want to spend. Serverpilot was amazing, but if you want to monitor, or have multiple servers you have to pony up for EVERY server. I have switch to RunCloud and not looked back. They have some amazing features, and the pricing is per account instead of server. I have 11 VPS units with all features and it is only $10 a month.
I've been using DigitalOcean for 3 years now and it has been rock solid. Prior to that I tried all the top tier managed servers but I would always encounter either outages, software, or server issues.
The one drawback to DigitalOcean is that you have to manage the server yourself, but if you are a Linux nerd it's easy to setup a server. I got tired of managing the back end because I wanted to focus on my WordPress installations and I use Runcloud.io to manage the DigitalOcean server. Their interface is excellent and you can manage your server and domains with ease. I especially like their RunCloud Hub for caching and it handles my many WordPress configurations better than I expected. I don't use Oxygen but once you have a solid server setup any WordPress installation will work great.
Ok,I went to RunCloud.io and it says PHP Cloud Server Management Panel, got 0 interest in Php, I'm trying to use it for node.js and dotnet core.
But thanks for sharing your experiences.
Bien ahi, unas "criticas constructivas" XD:
Instead of Cloudways which is quite restrictive (e.g. you don't have root access to your server) I use Runcloud with Digital Ocean which I've been very happy with so far. Sets everything up for you so you don't have to worry about security, vhosts etc.
I'm using https://runcloud.io/ to manage my servers, it's pretty nice to use. When I was freelancing I set everything up myself on DO but didn't have the time to a. learn it properly and b. maintain it - so everything kinda went to shit. I don't want to be a sysadmin so paying a middleman a small amount to do it for me makes sense :)
A suitable size cloud vps from (Digitalocean, Google Cloud Platform, Vultr or Amazon AWS),
A Junior linux sysadmin to setup server stacks (Php, MariaDB, nginx alone or as a reserved proxy after apache) or just the normal classic stack (PHP, MySql, Apache) stack. He will be resposible for adding and managing new clients website's virtualhosts, databases, host configuration and optimization according to clients website or web app requirments.
This is the most recent advanced setup for speed and performance optimized websites and apps.
You can also use some 3rd party server managment providers to easliy manage your vps with very little technical knowledge like (serverpilot.io) , (Moss.Sh) or (runcloud.io), Perhaps you can do your own search from here and compare services and pricing
Feel free to msg me if you did your search and still needing some answers : )
I use Vultr and originally went with serverpilot.io, but I recently switched to runcloud.io and like it much better, so check that one out as well. I started on the free plan, but switched over to the $8/month pro plan since I liked the site staging feature and a few other features too!
Another option but involves a bit more initial work (but a better setup) is signing up for a free RunCloud account + a DigitalOcean droplet ($5) and either one-click install WP or use a html theme instead. For email, sign him up with Zoho Mail. It's free and paid plans are cheap like $12/year if he needs the extra features (I doubt he does).
What's nice about VPS's is that you can destroy them as easily as create them. I would do that and then start with a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 along with PHP, MySQL and Apache/Nginx.
This is a two part process, first you'll install the OS along with creating a sudo user, configuring the firewall and creating SSH keys. Digital Ocean has good docs and I'm sure Vultr does too. It's the same process on either.
After confirming you can login (with your new sudo user, NOT root) you can install the other packages. Once again, DO docs are pretty clear.
Then it's the regular old WP install.
You can also streamline this process with a service like Runcloud. I'm pretty sure they have a free tier.
If you get through this you'll have a much better handle on how to manage things down the road when something goes wrong.
Umm, I don't really understand what you by regular vultr instance. It needs some a few "skills" to manage and run server right?
Fortunately I just saw runcloud.io and I think their free package suit my newbie skills.
Thanks!
I use digital ocean with Wordpress sites and manage my servers with Runcloud. It’s been a breeze and I really enjoy the performance of digital ocean servers.
I know many other people that use Cloudways with no problem, so you definitely have some options.
Maybe before switching your whole hosting solution, you could try something like that.
Good luck!
I just use a blank Ubuntu droplet. And then I'll use something like RunCloud to take care of the actual website management. They have a free tier, but I use the paid one, just because it makes my life sooooo much easier.
I appreciate your help. I'm not that advanced and need a developer to assist. Any idea as to whether it has to do with wordpress files, or a server setting?

I'm on digital ocean using runcloud.io to manage the server.
Long term serverpilot user here, it automates wordpress instals, manages apps and databases, mostly it helps with apache setup and php environments. Even though I have a fair bit of experience managing linux servers, its so easy I cant stop using it. A valid alternative would be https://runcloud.io/
AFAIK WP multi-site only works under the same domain.
If your company doesn't have a devops / server admin, I suggest using management services like Runcloud. It will save you a lot of trouble. The only thing is it doesn't manage emails.
> I have no experience scaling a server(s) horizontally. There are many things you can do before you need to do multi-webserver setup:
If you've done those and still need extra performance, then you can consider going multi webservers with load balancer. Usually, any large sized WP site is fine on a single VPS with CDN.
You're on the $20 plan with DO which Runcloud advertises as the specs for their $42/mo plan.
They provide management tools for unmanaged VPS like Cloudways does:
You will need to order another VPS from DO, install Runcloud's scripts on it, then migrate your sites from Cloudways VPS to your new Runcloud VPS.
>I'm unfamiliar with A2 but I think they've being spending a lot more money marketing on Facebook with how much they've been coming up here lately. I would be skeptical of them actually delivering equivalent performance to what you're seeing right now.
>

>
>Lets break down your costs.
>
>Basically you're paying $20/mo for DO and $22/mo for Cloudways to automatically manage your server for you.
>
>If you wanted to reduce your costs you could look at implementing Runcloud.io ($8/mo for one VPS) to replace Cloudways.
>
>Alternatively you could learn how to manage your VPS yourself and paying nothing other than the VPS hosting costs.

Thanks for your reply!!

Regarding the DO cost, TBH I am not sure if I am on the 20$ or 40$ plan, as DO have 2 plans on their website, it seems one has a better CPU than the other (Standard Droplets and CPU Optimized Droplets)

Anyways, I prefer anything managed as I don't have the time and technical skills to manage a VPS server.
Could you please tell me more about the Runcloud.io?
For the WordPress sites check out EasyEngine, Webinoly, or Runcloud.io.
As for the JIRA installation I highly suggest just using the SaaS edition. It's incredibly CPU and memory intensive, difficult to optimize, and definitely not something that's easy to resolve if you have issues.
I use a VPS which is connected to RunCloud.io. With that I setup the website in a testing subdomain. After completing the domain name is changed to the production domain. I use Peach to replace serialized Wordpress strings which contains the testing domain name.
Thanks for the information - i'd like to ask with what service can I get all of the aforementioned for $3? I've seen many hosting deals that offer promotional <$3 hosting, but the back-ups and security features are extra, and I end up having to pay for 3 years of service for the best price - like $250+ upfront. From what i've read though, service like RunCloud already offers fail2ban and other security measures - it seems they do the hard-work of running the site for you - you can take a look here: https://runcloud.io/features.html. Let me know what you think, and thanks again for the help!
I will push Digital Ocean until the day I die.
And to make management of the server a little easier, you can connect servers to https://runcloud.io/ It's $10 a month for an account, and you can connect as many servers to it as you want.
Oh yeah, I'm with you on making a little extra side bucks, that was my own intention too.
My own "let down" moment is when I've been pointed to https://runcloud.io/. They basically do it, it's beautiful, it works, and it's cheap. So I decided to stop my own version of the project. ;-)
Good luck on yours!
