Both are chat apps. Both have support for one-on-one chats and group chats. Just because one layout might work better for collaborative work, doesn't mean it's automatically better if it's not end-to-end encrypted. Semaphor by Spideroak is another good alternative to Slack with a focus on privacy
I think it would be good for the Sia team to interface with Spideroak's backup team as I can see a really good collaboration happening there.
