This company has been remote for three years now. We're a good way through thinking about this stuff. At the moment I'm agitating for more of our meetings to be completely unscheduled, using something like this https://sneek.io/ The only downside is I'll have to start wearing trousers.
Since the pandemic started, there's been a wave of horrendous surveillance software used by companies with shit cultures who don't know how to manage people remotely. Sneek, as mentioned in this article, for example. It doesn't market itself as awful invasive monitoring software, but jesus christ:
>Every minute or so, the program would capture a live photo of David and his workmates via their company laptop webcams. The ever-changing headshots were splayed across the wall of a digital conference waiting room that everyone on the team could see.
So yeah, this wave of surveillance software is definitely my answer to this question, because what the fuck. Sneek's not even the worst I've heard of. I'm glad my company has always been remote and understands that knowledge workers can't be 100% productive and focused on the screen for 8+ hours a day.
And they also mention Sneek in the article. An application that takes pictures with your webcam on set intervals so everyone in your team can see what you’re doing.
The fact that people think these levels of invasion of privacy are necessary in order to have accountability and transparency is crazy to me.
"Send Sneek snaps to any Slack channel using “/sneeksnap u/user” when you see someone making a funny face, looking seductive or picking their nose."
So, just stumbled across an article talking about a program for businesses doing work from home:
In order to keep productivity high while working remotely, some companies are turning to tools like Sneek. The software features a "wall of faces" for each office, which stays on throughout the workday and features constantly-updating photos of workers taken through their laptop camera every one to five minutes.
fuck. that. no way in hell i would ever agree to that.
I've seen some remote work startups use https://sneek.io/ to monitor/spy on their workers all day. Watching your completely dead coworkers faces all day must be soul crushing. Unsurprisingly these places have very high turnover.
