Yes, it's possible. It's also detectable, just not by your browser unless https has been downgraded to http. You can however get browser extensions/addons like "https everywhere" and "duckduck go privacy essentials" which enforce https/secure connections to websites and depending on your settings, completely revoke insecure connections.
As others have stated most of your traffic is encrypted nowadays, at very least the login should be. Unfortunately for some sites non-login data or other transmissions can be insecure but this getting less common.
The security can be downgraded in some instances without warning but usually you'd see a warning. There's usually a line through the padlock on the taskbar and a popup or page warning you that the login/page is insecure or some aspects of it are. That is cause for concern, particularly if you were already logged in or have not seen that error on that site before.
More valuable is the DNS information, they could collect metadata on you and use that against you, for example in social engineering. There's a reason governments collect or want to collect this data.
This is why people use a VPN. Here's some tips for you.
At the end of the day a determined hacker would more likely target your Wifi than the physical layer. Change your password to a long randomly generated one and use a VPN, check for DNS leaks and keep an eye out for problems.
Use Tor as a browser, or get a VPN.
I would still use a normal browser for generic crap, so she doesn't figure it out, and Tor/VPN for everything else.
I'm not suggesting you go with these people, its the explanation that will help you understand though. It discusses provider/owner.

Dude you, yourself said that vpns weren't banned, only some VPN companies were. Additionally there haven't been any arrests for VPN use. Which kinda throws a wrench into the whole its illegal argument.
Once you said that you weren't American I amended my argument to say that you're just from an American vassal state, which seems accurate based on the fact you keep swallowing American propaganda.
And as for the brainwashing, yes, you are. You will probably swallow any line of evidence that there is that promotes US imperialism. I'm not asking you yo make a major change, but I am asking you to at least pretend to think about how your own perception can be influenced, and has been influenced by media and political influence.
