Actually just found that since 2015 team viewer has had a headless linus access system.

Never used to so can't speak to its reliability etc but give it a look
In that case /u/sbabster 's answer is the best. I use it to sync two machines in different cities, all of the My Documents folders. It direct links the two machines, no cloud storage. It can be a bit fiddly to setup but once done you can forget about it. it just does it's thing in the background.
Another program you'll want to look at is Teamviewer. It allows remote control of a remote machine. With it installed on both machines if you're at work and need something off the home machine you remote into the home machine and grab what you need. And vice versa of you're at home and need something from the work machine. Of course that means the remote machine has to be left on.
Install Teamviewer first, then you can install Bitsync on both machines at the same time from either machine. Set it up on the local machine, remote into the other and set it up, then test the process, troubleshoot if needed. The initial sync will take some time but after that it happens pretty quick.
