The thing about "cut" is licensed by Microsoft. That's why Apple can't put that feature in their OS. (that's what I know.) If you want a cut feature like in windows try TotalFinder
I was wondering why I couldn't Cut files on an M1 Mac, and it turns out this functionality is enabled by a third-party utility, TotalFinder, which doesn't work on M1. So if anyone is wrangling a fresh install and wondering, "WTF?" that may be your answer.
ForkLift and Path Finder have been performing well lately, without exhibiting any conflicts with system operation. (The rollout of Path Finder 9 was a bit hasty, but version 10 seems to be more reliable.) I'd imagine most users grant these applications read access to the full filesystem, including external volumes. Such privileges can be revoked later by wading through the Privacy system preference pane.
I suppose things could start misbehaving if you were to change your default file manager and delete the Finder altogether:
defaults write -g NSFileViewer -string com.cocoatech.PathFinder
Totalfinder and Marta are some additional possibilities to consider, if you haven't seen them.
Sounds like System Integrity Protection is getting in the way. If /tmp
doesn't already exist it can't be created without first turning it off.
Used to be able to do this with an App that kind of replaced finder, called Total Finder, but then MacOS introduces SIP and it pulled the rug from under it. Was a great shame, any new Mac or reinstall, one of the first apps that went on.
Think it’s abandoned now.

Not much help I know. Carry on.
Not really an out of the box solution, but I've used TotalFinder for probably 8 years now and it kills the native macOS Finder experience. Using the Visor feature is an absolute game changer, plus the tabs are just straight up a better implementation than what Apple cobbled together a few OS updates ago.
