Looks pretty good. I already use <https://www.trustroots.org/tribes> which is quite similar (no homeswaps, just stays) and larger tribes instead of smaller networks.
Good job on your first php app!
Neither has nearly as many members as couchsurfing, but I've had a bit of success with both, and both seem to be growing.
Trustroots, BeWelcome and Warmshowers are all 3 better alternatives to CS.
EDIT: I should mention that Warmshowers is specified on cyclists.
Trustroots focuses on niches, like hitchhikers.
BeWelcome has a more diverse member base, like Couchsurfing.
We launched the site just 4 days ago so any questions/feedback/ideas are totally welcome!
Trustroots is not meant to be "an alternative" for anything really. If something, we're targeting especially those using Facebook for their hospex/networking needs instead of CS/BW crowd.
Primarily we're now making it suitable for hitchhikers and other tramps (since that's our community), but in the future there will be place for other communities in Trustroots as well. If you're comfortable within those people, you're most welcome to join! We're also running some quite popular sites such as Hitchwiki.org, Nomadwiki.org and Trashwiki.org

yes https://www.trustroots.org/ https://www.bewelcome.org/ all ORG run by volunteers and only https://www.couchsurfing.com/ COMmercial so the moderators of this sub changed the side bar in "All requests must be handled through the Couchsurfing.org" they use volunteers now?
This is such an awesome opportunity.
If you're comfortable with it, you can sleep in your car almost anywhere except for central city areas. It is illegal to do in many countries, but as long as you go to sleep late and leave early, it will be absolutely fine. Just try not to get woken up by police with a fine. A hostel will cost between 10-20 euros a night. If you're fine with sleeping at strangers' places, hospitality networks are fairly big here and can help you get by for free. Pack some camping gear for Croatia and Italy. I can recommend Park4Night, which also has an app and BeWelcome or Trustroots.
I think you should be able to get by on about 200 euros a month for food. Cook in the hostels, eat out when sleeping on the road, invite your hosts to dinner when staying with someone. Travelling in a car is significantly more expensive than on a coach, but can be cheaper than trains in some cases and allows for a lot more flexibility. If you leave the car outside the city and use public transport, you can avoid paying for parking.
All in all, I think you'd be fine with spending around 1000 euros a month as long as you can deal with a lack of comfort sometimes.
There are two other similar platforms worth checking out as well, https://www.trustroots.org/ and https://www.bewelcome.org/
The community is in a bit of a transitional period now that couchsurfers.com is no longer useable for many people, so many people use all 3 platforms for the most coverage
> I assume you’d be walking a lot.
I second this. In Paris we walk at least 3-4 kms a day just to get by. So having a par of good walking shoes could come handy.
If you're a student or if you're less than 26 years old, you can have discounted prices while visiting museums, movies, in trains, buses etc.
If you're interested in slightly atypic accommodation, checkout TrustRoots, GlobalFreeloader.com & BeWelcome
Who told you this story? I am sorry, It was all a bit different. The founders couldn't realize their ideas about hospexp within the slow moving BW community so they founded their own one. The focus on hitchhikers was chosen, because they were part of that community. AFAIK they aren't afraid of normal people.
To cite the FAQ https://www.trustroots.org/faq
Is Trustroots exclusively for hitchhikers? No. Trustroots is for everyone.
But don't be afraid, TR will not become like CS, as they don't have a commercial entity which focuses only on userbase growth.
Ugh love to join you but I'll probably be busy working in Luxemburg at that time. If you (2) feel like you need an airbed / couch / shower / beer in Luxemburg, dm me. Can also organize bed + beer in the Ruhr Area although I won't be staying there at that time.
Do you know https://www.trustroots.org/ ? it's a couchsurfing platform for hitchhikers (actually the guys behind the hitchwiki). It's invite only right now, so if you need an invitation code, dm me as well.
Happy hitchhiking + stay safe.
