The only browser that I think looks better than Firefox is Vivaldi, but using VivaldiFox with FF makes it look basically the same.
Well, you can start with VivaldiFox which pretty much brings some of Vivaldi's customization into Firefox. If you need something even deeper than that, it might be doable through editing userChrome.css.
Edit: > For features like tab stacking, I recommend Tree Style Tab
An addon I've been using for a few years, VivaldiFox, has worked fine since I updated to Proton. I have it set the current tab /url bar & toolbars/hamburger menu to a color according to either designated CSS color/tab background/favicon but it can all be set manually too.
It was intended, as the name implies, to set the colors of Firefox according to the current tab but it also works well as a super simple dead easy way to make a normal "static" Firefox theme. Changes work on-the-fly/ instant feedback so I'd recommend it to anyone who just wants to play with it to make Proton to their liking. Not too difficult to edit CSS, but this is just much easier for the average user. Also has support for an auto dark mode too.
Since I've made a few tweaks I've actually been enjoying the new UI a whole lot.
You could suggest it to the author of VivaldiFox, he is also contributing to improve the theming API so could forward the requests to get the needed features in the API if needed.
Fun fact: this feature is already available on Yandex Browser (when enabling the bottom tabs).
> In their meeting notes, Mozilla has explicitly stated that supporting add-ons like CTR are a non-goal.
Just to clarify, the text reads:
> Non-Goals
> * Completely implement add-ons like classic theme restorer
That is to say, some or many (being optimistic) customizations may end up being possible, but Mozilla isn't going to ensure that they all are.
> * Have decent Tree Style Tabs
This should be doable as they've already discussed supporting this function as well. I can't find the bug now, but there's one which includes the functionality of VivaldiFox which draws from the page itself for color scheming. So bundling with addons as well as interacting with them, should be possible.
changing the main colors: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/vivaldifox/
sidebar for websites: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/url-in-a-box/
Note that Firefox has a "Load in sidebar" functionality for bookmarks.
Not necessarily you're looking for, I know you mean much deeper options in general, but VivaldiFox is a neat addon that themes the browser according to the web page, it's a nice look and works well.
VivaldiFox is another dynamic WebExtension theme. There's an article on Hacks about the new theme APIs we're working on.
No cool new themes here. The API is strictly more restricted than what we have now. For example, change the UI colour based on the page is already possible. The big plus for developers is the amount of work to support a theme (they should be forwards compatible), at the cost of losing freedom in what they can change.
Decentraleyes - Stores often needed CDN content locally, so that you don't have to send out a request each time. Improves privacy and loading speed.
VivaldiFox - Colors Firefox's UI with the colors of the webpage that you're on.
This would require an extensions because there needs to be interaction between website content and chrome.
Extension that colors the chrome
However, if you mean the real titlebar then even this won't work. That's controlled by OS itself and cannot be styled from within Firefox.
If you like Vivaldi, but would really like to use Firefox, you might want to look at setting up https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/vivaldifox/ , an addon for giving firefox some of the vivaldi features. Disclaimer: I have not used this myself, I didn't use enough Vivaldi features to miss them on transition.
Any chance you could look into getting the buttons to work on a dynamic theme, like with the VivaldiFox extension? The buttons completely break when using it, but I love the color changing too much to give it up for the OS X style buttons. Thanks in advance if you do happen to look into it! <3
> Vivaldi
Vivladi's tab colouring is a little different. It themes the tab bar with the favicon colour. VivaldiFox does a pretty good job at replicating that.
You might try VivaldiFox for the grey color issue. The folder colors have to be changed with css. Instructions can be found here.
Sounds more like a job for Vivaldi Fox, the AMO page suggests a 57+ port is in progress, which from what I understand should work on mobile. Not sure that this functionality will be there natively (haven't seen any chatter about it but haven't read the mobile photon specs)
This add-on has an option to grey out inactive tabs (it says Windows, I'm assuming tabs), although I haven't seen it in action myself. Maybe I haven't noticed (installed it a few days ago). I got the add-on for the theme features though.
I hope it helps!
