Don't build websites that need to rely on ad revenue to operate. If you want to publish something like a blog, use something decentralized or have someone else host it that can amortize the costs (using something like writefreely. If you want to build an application, make it a desktop app.
I wish more people would use federated services like WriteFreely or others, or even a self hosted blog with an RSS feed. It would help combat the control that all of these unnecessarily centralized services have.
I just remembered that Wordpress exists, but that is hard to use just as a blogging platform, so I'll put in the website builder section.
Is it https://writefreely.org? That looks excellent. Unfortunately, my school forces me to publish stuff on Medium (they also force me to use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, and a Chromebook), but I'll remove the asterisk from it.
Not sure if you've seen WriteFreely; might be an interesting tool for blogging. Also has the potential to tie in with Mastadon if we ever decide to make our own federated platform for discussion.
Yeah, I love Write Freely; I'm planning to set one up as soon as I have enough money to pay the $2 for hosting / move somewhere where the ISP gives me a static IPv6 address / get cjdns working properly.
