This is Ron, the last character (so far) in the game: we decided that animating a werewolf wasn’t complicated enough and added at least three different animals. And some frogs and a pet hedgehog, because why not.

Maybe try "Almost a Hero", It's a rpg clicker, 15 sec per minute playin it is ok. Usually I don't like clicker but this one is really good, full of content. :)

I've really been enjoying Almost a Hero. First idle game I've ever really enjoyed. I haven't spent any money on it and it hasn't felt like there's any kind of paywall to it. I would recommend it.

We wanted to create a werewolf-type guy, but we ended up turning him into at least three different animals, mostly at the same time. And added some frogs and a pet hedgehog, because why not.

Check in atleast twice a day. Normally not long but often. It does have ias but you truly don't need them I find. I spent $4 on a black Friday pack to buy cosmetics other thrn thst nothing for like a year and a half.
Godville, but that may be too passive for you, although it matches your first paragraph's description. You can get as involved as you'd like to be and it can be complex if you want it to be. You could not login for a year and come back to progression (and an achievement!) and read up about important happenings gone by, and you can also get deeply involved with the community and guilds for that added RP benefit. I've "played" GodVille for almost 6 years and nothing has come quite close. It's available to play from your browser (the link I provided), found on Facebook, and there are apps for it as well.
Almost a Hero? It's an idle clicker but one of the few I haven't deleted and enjoy playing still months later, because there is more involved than just clicking and idling by. It is an Android App only though.
Both my suggestions might be off-base to what you want, but maybe you'll become a fan of one of them anyways :) Sorry if you think they suck :(

The only way it doesn't fit is in the offline progression, you won't have much of that in the beginning. Clicking quickly goes away as a core mechanic

There is no best for idle game that the "best" is not a flat concept. But since you play "idle heroes" i think you are ok with RPG concept. Also you are asking for "multiplayer" but that is not a thing for most idle games since the challenge is "idlling" mostly.

GodVille, passive or not-so-passive idle game with a great RP element in the community. Browser based or there are apps for it. You don't need to get involved with the community, you can play completely solo, or even not play and still progress.. It's cool. I linked the browser version
Alto's Odyssey or Adventure smooth, peaceful "runner" type games. Link's to Android.
Also a Sketch/Paint App is a must. My favorite completely free and easy to use for beginners app is Sketch

It's not that aggressive on its monetization. But I was patient about it.
Actually, it's hard to imagine idle game without a grind. It is basically synonymous.
Almost A Hero is my current addiction. I think it came out mid/late 2017 but I just found it a couple weeks ago. It's a grind but that's the whole point. Lots of fun.
