I have absolutely no idea if this would work, just putting an idea out there as there aren't many comments on this thread.
Could you try mounting your nas through a separate app such this. Then in kodi looking for the local directory where its mounted?
If you are already running CIFS/SAMBA file sharing for your Windows machines or whatever, then probably something like this.

I can't offer a solution, but I can offer two workarounds:
1) I recommend AndSMB for wireless file transfers with windows shares. (I have the paid version and I sync my photos with my computer frequently) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lysesoft.andsmb
2) Copy the photos to a thumb drive with a USB OTG cable.
Had to look up what you meant, but no - just tried it and no go. Tried a Samba client compatible with the SHIELD called AndSMB and it can map to the share, but only for itself, the system doesn't see it. So effing lame.
I hope so, I've only got a tablet and a pi 2 at home, I've got a connection using samba so I can transfer files from my tablet to my pi, works for movies in Kodi, hoping it works for RetroPie too: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lysesoft.andsmb&hl=en
This is a common bug that has yet to be addressed through several iterations of ES file manager. There is a theory that the main thread goes to "sleep" after a certain period of time, causing the connection to the fileshare to drop.
It sounds like the same issue as you are having. At the moment, the only real advice I can give you is to try an alternative client - such as this one.
AndSMB will allow you to connect to Windows Shares:

You can use ConnectBot for remote administration:

Maybe try UnixAdmin too. It has FTP as well:

Play Store link and the pay version
AndSMB https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lysesoft.andsmb An old favourite, updated and works
I use AndSMB to push/pull to Windows boxes. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lysesoft.andsmb&hl=en
I'm a sysadmin and use the hell out of this app.
