Blood Bowl, if you're unfamiliar, uses 32mm bases on a square grid board. Passing is carried out using a range ruler, though, with 4 different passing ranges having an effect on roll modifiers. A circle with those 4 ranges on it using a 32mm base would show all viable targets and the passing range to them.
Something which would also be nice would be interceptions, but that's added functionality on what you have here. An interception is possible if, when you lay the range ruler over the centre of the passer and the target, there is an opposing player within the width of the ruler.
At the moment people use grid-based apps such as this excellent app to do the calculations, but I think yours might be popular for it.
Back on 40k, though, I was wondering if there will be spherical ranges possible for when units are at different heights such as on ruins.
Not trying to rain on the parade, but somebody already made one for free: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cyberedelf.interception
I believe they do if used properly. There is error, ofc, but that's most often from people making errors in selecting the start and end point of measuring. The NAF recommends using the chart over the ruler to remove such ambiguities, and provides links to a chart and an app (which is excellent) for interceptions.
I've not seen any examples of the ruler being too wide in BB2, although it's not something I personally have checked. Do you have any such examples?
Counting in your head is going to be more difficult, ofc, particularly for interceptions. Having the app to hand works wonders.
I'm not sure on the square shape for passing. It would be a considerable buff, I think, which might actually be what is needed to make it a more popular option.
First off, including the digital adaptations, I have an embarrassing number of matches of this played (at least 200), which is only outdone by the even more embarrassing numbers other people have pulled, such as some of the more legendary teams over at FUMBBL having over 3,000 matches played. Not a coach (The human is called a "coach" in BB to clarify him vs the units which are called "players"), but one team! Granted, none of the original, or even 10th generation players would still be alive that far into a lifespan of course.
Might be worth waiting as the miniature size is changing to standardize the game with all the other GW products, which means the play mats will be a touch too small. It's going from 25mm to 32mm bases, so it's a bit of a step up in size. That said this is only a worry if you intend to play in an actual Games Workshop (no 3rd party minis allowed), or use their 1st party miniatures at home.
The actual size differences don't matter as much as long as you use a passing chart not the range ruler, excluding interception edge cases which ruler or not are fiddly, and there's a android app for that. Both are recommended over the range ruler as edge cases can be problematic, especially if someone has shaky hands.
Rules will be the same though, except rumors of some minor "why are they even bothering" hire price adjustments of a few units. And supposedly they've gotten rid of the absurd rule that let's you be a dick if the other player forgets to move his turn counter before touching his pieces, which used to grant you a free reroll, which can be game changing as most teams only carry 2 or 3.
If you use the passing template (or the excellent app) instead of the ruler then you can just use the same stuff.
