They're the titular characters of one of the OG Warhammer 40k series of novels. They easily compare to or are superior in quality to their non-40k military fiction counterparts.
Brilliant characters, brilliant worldbuilding, brilliant plots, brilliant tactics and fucking crushing feels.
The first two books are a tad generic as they were originally published in a magazine but book 3 Necropolis is genuinely God-tier and it only improves from there.
They're packed into Omnibuses so you can get the books at 3 at a time for dirt cheap.
Found it!
“NOT FOR KIDS Bought this for my son, and was hugely disappointed to find that it's just pieces of plastic, no instructions and no paint. Total rip-off.”
Yup, a resin cast of a Hellboy action figure arm and the sword was from this set, definitely Buster Sword inspired. I wanted something chunky for him to swing around.
For roughly $25 USD you can get 50 dropper bottles and 100 stainless steel no rust agitators. This kit even comes with a funnel!
Love the Eldar, they are not depicted as beings like this enough. Arrogant xenos? Yes, Sentient species struggling for survival? Also yes; and it comes across in this picture: http://www.artstation.com/artwork/iron-hands-space-marines-vs-alaitoc-eldar
Hi just a friendly reminder on licenses since you said: "I kit-bashed a bunch of thingiverse files and did a bunch of extra sculpting and modeling on top."

In any case, great work. Can't wait to see it on a mini.
Not plastic. Resin, the Anycubic is a DLP printer, using a liquid resin and a UV display to print the layers. The quality is perfect as perfect as the model you load into the machine. no print lines, this model I only needed supports on the shoulder pads. Everything else was straight printed

For all those looking in google play, it's there, just buried. I just looked for all apps made by GW and found it.

Has anyone found how to enable push notifications yet? (according to the fine print, it must be enabled to be entered into the contest)
That one is definitely my favorite artwork on his site. The perspective is absolutely perfect. The POV is from the back of the Eldar squad facing towards the space marines, but the artist tilts the scene and lowers the POV closer to the ground.
This is what I imagine: You are recoiling from the dreadnaught appearing - you are in the middle of recovering from a concussive blast. And when you look up - very disorientated and shellshocked, you see death. You see your squadmate try to grab the one in front, but the chaingun from the dreadnaught is sweeping around - you know both of them will be torn to pieces the next time you blink. The rangers are completely exposed - puny and powerless against the imminent war machine. And then, right in the middle is a space marine readying his weapon, pointing right at you, and your squad. It will very likely be the last thing you ever see.
There is so much captured within one still image - and all because of the POV the artist chose.
But look at this scene without the Eldar - it's really cool, but you aren't really drawn into the action like before.
The torso fans are 4.5" battery powered desk fans I got at the dollar store, I have them attached inside to holes I cut in the torso but you can't see because the exhaust holes are covered by the tabard/cloak. For circulation I have one facing in for intake and the other pointed out for exhaust (think of it as cooling a computer case). The helmet has an O2COOL Deluxe Necklace Fan inside the back of it.

Yeah no. Starcraft was not going to be a 40k game. Some at Blizzard wanted to license warhammer fantasy, but nothin ever happened.
"[Blizzard co-founder] Allen Adham hoped to obtain a license to the Warhammer universe to try to increase sales by brand recognition", Wyatt says. "Warhammer was a huge inspiration for the art-style of Warcraft, but a combination of factors, including a lack of traction on business terms and a fervent desire on the part of virtually everyone else on the development team (myself included) to control our own universe nixed any potential for a deal. We had already had terrible experiences working with DC Comics on "Death and Return of Superman" and "Justice League Task Force", and wanted no similar issues for our new game."
Very nice, but the actual imperial documentation on dealing with Orks is somewhat less accurate.
If you can find a copy of The Uplifting Primer (for less than $300) I highly recommend it, it's a hilarious read.
You say that as a joke, but after the 439th Astrillian Rifles implemented his guidelines for more ergonomic combat fatigues, their conquest of Patrenar VII went forward 7.2% more efficiently leading to an improvement in Time-To-Compliance of 3.7 Terran standard years below the average, an improvement in the ratio of Vile Heretics Justly Slain For Their Heinous Crimes Against The Emperor to Brave Guardsmen Nobly Martyred In The Name of Him-On-Earth of nearly 12%, and an attendant decrease in Munitorum resupply/reinforcement expenditures. On top of that, they were able to arrive at their next warzone nearly 17 months earlier than similar regiments that either didn't implement the guidelines, or that implemented false placebo guidelines, with no need for an extended recruitment drive/R&R.
So even though you clearly state in your blog post that you found this image on Instagram, you not only don't link to the artists instagram account, you also rehost his work, and then post YOUR "article" here, thus giving your blog views but passing nothing onto the guy who actually did the work. How about just linking to the guy who painted this in the first place?
Here, let me help you: https://instagram.com/drewzy_figurepainting/
See, that's how you link to someone's website. The link on your blog goes here: https://igcdn-photos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfa1/t51.2885-15/11008271_660661050729838_495559627_n.jpg
Stop rehosting other people's work and using it to get views from reddit. It's a shitty practice done by shitty people.
A gunpla-styled Titan would likely need to be as large as the Neo-Zeong, which is still cheaper than actual Titans lol:

This is what I used Pourable Plastic Deep Pour Up to 2" Thick Clear Casting Resin 3 Quart Kit Perfect for River Tables https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07HGNHM7V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_ghYUFbAE1HCTS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I did not do too much extensive research on brand etc. This was just a great price, non toxic, non smelling and simple 2:1 ratio to mix. It also had great reviews and is made for deep pours. This was the second I have ever used resin. First time I used some stuff from Michael’s and it was a disaster as it was insanely corrosive, ate through everything and it as the worst smelling shit, couldn’t go in the room for weeks. So far this stuff is already 100x better
'impcat' is a digital army painter app, but only has 6 built-in models (by Artel "W"). See here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DesignBench.impcat&hl=de
It has an import function for custom content, though. So if you can get your hands on compatible files, you can simulate paint schemes on them.
The #impcatMe campaign on Instagram lets the users decide what contents will be available for the app, i.e. their own miniatures
Pledge floor wax, under plastic wineglasses from Walmart to keep the dust out while drying.
Put the pledge into a dropper bottle, you can apply a drop directly to the area you want to work with and push around with a brush. Because it takes a few minutes to dry, it self levels out the brush strokes, but you should cover it while drying to keep clean of dust and hair.
Use as protective layer, mix with paint as glaze, apply before doing chipping, or seal whole mini and then airbrush, because overspray is much easier to remove from clear coat than from paint.
Thin coats, and try to leave surface level while it dries, since it dries slower than other products, you don't want it sliding down hill.
Frankly it has so many uses I'm still exploring. Use anywhere you would use lahmian medium, and most places you would use ardcoat. It's about seventy times cheaper, so you can afford to experiment.

Yeah, I don't exactly know why, but you have to specifically tell the Play Store search to NOT correct your input to 'impact'. Hope this helps: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DesignBench.impcat

Hello, I'm a bot! The movie you linked is called Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie, here are some Trailers
This tutorial helped a ton, particularly the part at 3:00 where he demonstrates the proper consistency of a glaze against your fingernail.
The tutorial guy doesn't mention it (I think), but adding a bit of matte medium to your glazes helps a ton.
Another trick that's helped me is getting this and pre-mixing my glazes in it. I've found if I try making glazes in my wet palette their consistency changes and they run around the palette a lot.
Hope that helps! Remember to be patient, both sides of that weapon took an hour and a half but the result is worth it.
Yeah I didn’t get some high end one, maybe in the future when I decide to do more than just base coating, I got the airbrush/compressor etc for 80 bucks off amazon

Legends tell of a fabled forge world where nothing but the finest plastic drip bottles are produced for the glory of the Emperor.
Im playing, not OP but i found these on Amazon
I would suggest looking in to some actual modeling paints. Especially for the blacks and metallics you'll need for those Deathwatch models. That set of inexpensive artists acrylics will not have the pigment saturation that you'll need for quality coverage.
This is a great starter set and comes with a wash and a quality brush - https://www.amazon.com/Miniatures-Highlighting-Miniature-Army-Painter/dp/B01MTXRU2L/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1546629959&sr=8-5&keywords=army+painter
There's the GameFor app for finding events and players in your area. I've not used it much myself as I've already got a bit of a gaming group, but I heard about it on I've of the 40k podcasts (although I can't remember which one)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iamgamefor.gamefor
If he wants Aggressors, then that's probably the thing to get. If you can find a local store in your area you can usually get 20% off MSRP (plus it's good to support local businesses). Otherwise, here is a link to the thing he wants on Amazon:
Yeah the Codex Astartes is like The Art of War: it's not a book full of specific procedures and tactics, it's more like the general principles that should guide a commander in coming up with the strategies and tactics they use to defeat their opponent; the Codex Astartes of course also having a sizable portion of its text given over to the organization of Space Marine Chapters.
I hate the Ward bullshit as much as anyone, but I think the Ultramarines hate is going a little overboard at this point.
I have the White Dwarf issue with these rules in it. It's White Dwarf 237 and it's a Jetbike Duel game by Gav Thorpe. Here is a link.
https://www.scribd.com/document/200693180/White-Dwarf-237-US
Go down to page 57 (page 55 in the book) and the rules are there. I can transcribe the pages if you need them but it's a lot of reading.
I printed these http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:42776 out on my MakerBot Replicator 2 "disclaimer I work for them" I'm thinking of furnishing my whole table with exclusively 3d printed terrain. What do you guys think?
Thought I would post of pic of this and just mention where I got it. I saw these on Amazon and after checking the size figured, what the heck, I'd give it a try. I ran across it by accident searching for paint racks. After looking at some of the different size racks (metal, etc) in the Amazon search nail polish racks came up. I got to looking through some of those and realized they had alot of variety. The one pictured here was only $17. Smaller ones come in around $14.

Here's the [link]( https://www.amazon.com/5-Shelf-Glass-Curio-Cabinet-Black/dp/B00FPGP4KA) Its called a 5 shelf glass curio cabinet black on amazon and its from Coaster Home Furnishings. Hope that helps! They're great, much better the Ikea's Detolf imo.
If we’re going with store bought solutions, Citadel textures are crazy overpriced. Vallejo texture paint is under $20 for 200ml of texture compared to Citadel’s $8 for 24ml.
In case anyone is looking for the link on android or apple
LOL, Right? Who wants vocabulary!? People today are so dumb!
>Untoward first showed up as a synonym of unruly in the 1500s, and it is still used, just as it was then, though it has since acquired other meanings as well.
It's more like the scale of Dawn of War III in general is just off.
Seriously, look at this and tell me it doesn't look at least somewhat ridiculous.
EDIT: As a bonus, here's an official scale they released in case people bring up the in-game cutscene exaggeration argument.
Siphon feed airbrushes (with the paint reservoir on the bottom or sometimes side) are usually intended for larger applications like automotive spraying. That’s not to say it won’t work, but you will likely wind up wasting a lot of paint.
If all you’re doing is priming and base coating, then something like the classic cheap Master airbrush off of Amazon should work just fine.
Master Airbrush Model G22 Multi-Purpose Dual-Action Gravity Feed Airbrush Set with a 0.3mm Tip and 1/3 oz. Fluid Cup - User Friendly, Versatile Kit - Spray Auto Graphics, Art, Crafts, Tattoos, Cake https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EKUU0WY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_648S65AJMG17MV0YZ50S?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It’s frequently bundled with a compatible compressor as well. If you progress and want to do more advanced stuff with an airbrush there are better kits you can look into later (and since this is relatively inexpensive if won’t break your heart to stop using it eventually).
Well crap, I double checked it and the link is expired

In my opinion when you start out buy the cheap shit on Amazon.
You'll need an air compressor. I had a pancake 6-gallon compressor for my cars tires and stuff so I just used that. It's loud AF.
My point though is that you shouldn't buy somethign really nice until you know the basics and if you even like it. That masters brush I've had is FANTASTIC so far. As such, I'm excited/nervous for when i buy a nice Iwata/Badger. I hope it's as great as people say, but so far, since the masters has been so good... i'm skeptical. Will be buying one this summer though.
I painted these guys with my airbrush. Detail work was obviously done with a hand brush though.
Yeah, I re watch the whole thing almost every month to get my fix. It's like waiting for a new episode of DBZ abridged.
Some good news though is that his patreon is almost to $1,000, and if he gets there it says in the description that he will be able to focus on getting videos out a lot faster and at even better quality. He would basically be able to start making them full time: https://www.patreon.com/alfabusa?ty=c
Edge highlights lookin sharp but to me the lenses are what really pop. And the 3rd company trim. Props.
Not sure if you 3d print or know anyone who does but since your painting 3rd company I wanted to share this with you as well: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/ultramarines-3rd-company-banner-scourge-of-the-xenos
I bought the 4th company one and it turned out excellent.
There's one for sale currently on Facebook Marketplace, IIRC.

I'm going to take a different route from everyone suggesting piracy, and instead suggest that you look here on Amazon or on Book Depository. Alternately, head to your Friendly Local Game Store and see if anyone is currently running a Dark Heresy game that you could possibly sit in on, or join for a few sessions, to see if you like it. I know that it's "cool" to use the internet for piracy and find everything for free, but still... downloading the latest Hollywood movie is one thing, those studios make billions of dollars a year. Gaming companies have much, much smaller profit margins, and I think that piracy does affect them.
> focus on Heroic units able to take on whole groups of soldiers by itself has become the focus of the upcoming (supposedly) historic title Three Kingdoms.
That's why 3K is going to have the Romanticized version and Classic mode. In classic mode, heros are no different than generals in past games
Bronze and brown is a bad choice, they are too similar and visually bleed together.
According to the triad/3-color design philosophy, complementary colors to Bronze are Glacier ( Pale Blue ) and Chelsea Cucumber ( Pale Green ).
Since you already have blue on the weapon, I would suggest painting the cloak in a pale green, sort of like british WWI uniforms, perhaps with heavy brown weathering.
> Then for whatever reason, GW made it so the Ethereals were ackchually eevil and do mind control on the Tau
Did you know that this was written about in Xenology, in 2006?
This was baked into the background from initial release.
That should be everything you need, and it's a mobile app called Impact. The files are the models to use in the program. I think the program also cost $5 just so you are aware.
Program: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DesignBench.impcat
If you have a screwdriver bit/storage piece, you could press multiple slot screwdriver bits into the putty at once, though the indentations would be of uneven size.
On the other hand, if you want finer indentations, you could try pressing slot jewel screwdrivers into the putty, but considering the size of their heads, it would take even longer.
The Mod is not, but I believe the DoW is.
here is a link to the mod. It should have all the files and such that you need.
It’s been awhile since I’ve downloaded it, but if you have any questions downloading it, I’ll do my best to help.
There's the link for this one, you can pick them up on amazon or ebay.
you will hear lots of things being used. I use the one from Amazon with the yellow sponge and paper. Some people use tile from home depot. Some people as below use a Tupperware box with a dish washing sponges and paper towels. Really anything will work, it all comes down to personal preference and if you want to spend $1 or $20.
amazon one I use. nice $10 and it works well. Yes, I use the paper that comes with it but most people just use parchment paper
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C18GTE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So GW had this problem too with the SoB box set. Scalpers started selling it on eBay but, before they managed to, GW did a purge of the pre-orders and sent the ones they could identify as multiples out to their stores.
There are some dodgy sellers on Amazon too:

Strips paint safely off resin, plastic, and metal. Soak 24 hours for super easy removal. Wear gloves, get toothbrush, rinse under warm water, after soaking, while scrubbing with toothbrush.
Disclaimer Do not brush teeth with that brush again.
Gotcha. Totally agree that Guard is a sensible place where the kind of non-sexualized representation I have been talking about would be great to see. Admittedly the DE line is slanted toward BDSM type design, so batshit out-there design makes sense for them.
And well, if you're interested, here's an article "On Designing Better Women in Games" which, tho is focusing on Blizzard's Overwatch, does an interesting job expounding on gendered design principles that could be relevant to miniatures modeling as well!
In any case, thanks for talking about this stuff with me.
Nothing really goes with everything apart from blacks greys and whites. But you can often find a third colour to make two clashing colours work better together and adjusting saturation and the layout on the model can help too.
https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel I've used this before when I've needed some inspiration it's similar to this chart in that in follows the same principles but it lets the user pick the colours and it'll recommend that'll go with it.
I've used the GW snippers and while they are good, I've found a pair which comes really close, for a fraction of the price, the cutting angle is amazing and they're really sharp. I always keep a second pair handy, as it takes a few weeks for them to arrive.
I come from south Germany, in the middle of the Black Forest. But if corona is over, and you need some vacation, come over.
We also have a lovely hicking trail here, where I live right at the beginning:

People are just going to suggest yellow because they know what complimentary colours are and they think that makes them van gogh, but I'd try http://colormind.io/ to find something you think looks nice which is lighter.
looks great, but you got me laughing with the balancing act while trying to keep the plate moving LMAO. I know what your going through those little plated can push much weight. There isn’t a better tripod model you can find because this one is directly using the 3D model from the actual movie. Better hurry. There’s only one left and this model is not produced anymore to my knowledge.
Im still newer to painting, but when I first started I got these.
I know everyone has their own things going on, so if you can't get them for whatever reason or you just want a different starter set, send me a message and we can sort it out.
Its a joy to see new painters in this hobby, it would be a shame to have some one lacking the tools be discouraged from continuing.
In regards to bolt guns I quite like metalics on the bottom and another color on the top bit.
Yes, there is a difference!
It is strongly recommended that you always prime your minis with a dedicated primer spray. The biggest benefit is that the primer sticks to the plastic of the model MUCH better than your brushed paints. This allows you to get much smoother coats on your models.
Citadel primers are ridiculously overpriced though. They do have leadbelcher in a can but its like $17 USD. I usually use Rustoleum primer sprays that are readily available at any hardware store or target or walmart or whatever because they are cheap and I find them to be of equal or even better quality than the Citadel ones. https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-249088-Painters-Purpose-12-Ounce/dp/B002BWORZO/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=rustoleum+primer&qid=1603988851&sr=8-2 is my go-to, but I also have black and white depending on what the final color I'm going for is.
The only occasion I use citadel primers is for using contrast paints, which rely heavily on the undercoat to get the color right.
I LOVE kitbashing models into 40k shit. Here's what I got
I particularly like these ones
M26 Pershing gives a more mid century feel without having the association that the Sherman has.
1/48 scale is almost on scale for 40k (28mm is about 1/55, but weapons are 1/35 or larger) but the vehicles may still look small. If this is the case try 1/35. Amazon searches for "1/35 scale tank" or "1/48 scale tank" should turn up good ones. These models are more complex than the GW ones, but read through the directions first and you should be fine.
Let me know if you have any questions!
EDIT: the beef I have with t34s and m4 shermans are that they are extremely iconic. If you see one with cadians grouped around it it really breaks immersion and clashes with the rest of the army. Now, if you had like valhallan ice warriors I would totally say t34s would be fucking sweet. I'm assuming you are using cadians because they are the only fuckin IG models made in the last decade. I'd aim for tanks between the end off ww2 to modern for a right feel for cadians
I used one I made myself for awhile but then I got this guy and love it
Privateer Press Formula P3 Wet Palette Model Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001F8OLZQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_AcY6ybEHZ15VM
If you just search wet pallet on Amazon a few good ones will come up.
I like wet palette over a dry because paint stays fresher, it actually helps to thin the paint out some, I can create my own thin shades much easier since they aren't getting soaked up by a paper pallet.
You can not leave your paint in it overnight though, at least not in my experience. I tried it and when I came back next day my paint was basically liquid from where it absorbed so much water.
Hope that helps
Okay here is the one I used and typical Amazon fashion its now $9.
HDE Solar Powered Rotating Rotary Display Stand Turntable Collectible Show Case - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZCY610M/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_OTooAbESS7HQH
I'm just getting used to using the magnifying glass, I'm hoping it finally helps me learn how to do eyes properly
Yes. I believe they were from ~~6th~~ 7th edition. You put a die on the little platform underneath them to indicate what the objective number was. Although they were actually supposed to indicate something about how a vehicle was wounded.
edit: I found the package they came in.
https://www.amazon.com/Games-Workshop-GW40-44-Warhammer-Munitorum/dp/B008EYGVP2
Not at all.
These fit perfectly under GW bases. Little dab of super glue, let sit overnight. Bam magnetized base.
As for what to stick them to. At Lowe's or Home Depot you can get steel roofing flashing shingles for about 75 cents a whack. You can glue these into a simple lided case or tote.
I'll go with the pizza bat'leth instead.
I can recommend a type of dirty bronze i make.
It's basically just balthazar gold, nuln oil to bring out the recesses, then your partially highlight some blotchs with ironbreaker. https://vgy.me/agMXer.jpg
I have a Makerbot Replicator (5th Generation) at work, and I've been thinking of giving it a go to print off some larger items like Dreadnoughts or scenery. This is a recent purchase so we haven't had a lot of time to play around with it and get to know how it works properly, but from the test prints we've done so far, I don't think you'll get the level of detail you want for a miniature. Check out the Thingiverse, a bunch of people have made a few things for 40k and uploaded them for all to enjoy.
As for casting, I have cast up a couple of batches of resin bases and it was super easy. I only used a one part mould, so you'd probably need to do a 2 part mould for miniatures which would add a layer of complexity to the process. But there are plenty of useful tutorial videos on YouTube if you're interested in that sort of thing.
Hope this helps.
Feel free to add more good people of the Imperium.
EDIT: Added a .rar file full of icons, there are some 40k icons in there, also quite a few others, take a look - enjoy.
My recommendation: come up with your own scheme so you aren't stuck with the same regiment (Cadian/Catachan/etc) for the life of the army.
You can use online color wheels like this one to look at various color combinations. They automatically suggest colors that harmonize or contrast with your base color, or you can just compare any colors side by side.
Do you want to paint them as an existing chapter or create your own? Take a peek around the Lexicanum at the Founding chapters and their successor chapters and you might find a chapter whose lore and/or color scheme you really like.
If you're making a custom scheme, I always find looking at a color wheel to be helpful, like messing around on https://color.adobe.com/
A great resource is the Adobe Color Wheel. You can select your base color and it will give you suggestions for colors that will go well together based on color theory. I find that using Complimentary and only changing the brightness of the suggested colors (the bottom slider) gives a good color scheme. If you like the blue, here's the scheme it suggests. I've lightened up the brown a bit and it looks like XV-88 or Zandri Dust might give you a nice compliment to your blue.
Just as a general technique pointer, if you're painting red (or other bright colors) over a dark base, it can be beneficial to lay down a layer of grey or white first. On the pauldrons the dark blue is showing through the brush strokes, but if you laid down a base of Celestra Grey or Ceramite White it would make your red much brighter (and require fewer coats) and help to hide the underlying color.
Link to the actual tutorial (it's the first comment, pretty much the same thing ArgonWolf said, only much brighter because of the type of light used, those things are helluva bright)
This is a fantastic list, that orders them in chronological order:

I've mainly been going through the higher rates ones.
Hello all, I'm out of touch with Warhammer 40K and my nephew asked for it for his birthday. A little out of my element here. I asked him specifically what kind he wanted and he said 'any space marine legion because they are easier to paint and perfect for beginners'. Is this a good purchase? Any help/advice would be appreciated, thanks!
It's this type of thing: https://www.amazon.com/TekMat-Premium-Cleaning-Durable-Oil-Resistant/dp/B07GDT2SDH
For disassembling and reassembling a gun. Looks like OP's is for an AR style rifle based on the parts I see in that list. Could be wrong though.
Custom or random successor chapter. That way you can be flexible with the rules. This is a good source of inspiration for color schemes. I take it by the space marines combat patrol you mean this one right?
I would recommend either the Blood Ravens (from the Dawn of War series, but they also have an easy and nice looking color scheme), Silver Skulls (metallic schemes are quite rare but look good, and they have a fun backstory as Iron Warriors who remained loyal passing as Ultramarines), or the Patriarchs of Ulixis (Ultramarines successor, but little written lore and a very pretty color scheme to build on).
If your friend plays Chaos Space Marines, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to simply purchase for him an HQ choice to add to his collection (they're around $35 USD, but I think 22€, so they're not terrible)
If you want to go this route, and if he plays Alpha Legion, then a Sorcerer would be a good choice to go with, they synergize the best with Alpha Legion, but a Dark Apostle or a Master of Executions can give a unit with a unique niche to explore and build around (providing separate buffs and being a dedicated character killer respectively). I would make sure you know what HQ's he has first before doing that though, as even though he would probably respect and enjoy getting a gift for his hobby, having multiple Masters of Executions is a tad redundant as you really only have one
If you don't want to do a figurine, you could instead get him a book about the Alpha Legion like Shroud of Night.
Hopefully I was able to give you some help in getting your friend a gift for his birthday!
Brush soap. It's life changing. I used to use dawn (I use dawn for literally everything) but this is next level stuff.

And if you mess a brush up, this kinda stuff works wonders, I'm currently using the version from greenstuff world, but they're all pretty much the same.
Concentrated it'll take just about any paint residue/build up off your brush. But I like diluting it a ton (like a teaspoon in 2oz of water) to use as a final rinse at the end of a session.

Static Grass Applicator. Just started using it, so glad someone noticed, haha.

This is the one I use. From my understanding of the process, it statically polarizes the position of the grass. So its getting attracted on both sides and forces the flocking to "stand up" Its pretty amazing results wise. You can then go back over, spray on adhesive in patches to apply more, and create a more natural effect as well.
100% the real thing. My wife bought it for my birthday. She bought it as a way to learn about 40K without me fully immersing herself.

Good catch! I'm using this at the moment:

Eeew. No, please DON’T buy citadel tools. They’re seriously WAAAAAY overpriced.
There is a pin vise (hand drill) that I can promise you is EVERY bit as good as citadel’s, but costs 1/3 the price.
Detail Paint Brushes Set 10pcs Miniature Brushes for Fine Detailing & Art Painting - Acrylic, Watercolor,Oil,Models, Warhammer 40k. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075L8LCTG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_l390Fb10SCQT3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I use these and they’ve been great.
Try to pick up the Indomitus box, some stores just got some more stock in, and for $200 it's a great value. Eradicators, Bladeguard, Assault Intercessors, and the rulebook is already over that value, and the rest of the box is gravy. You can sell the Necrons for at least $100.

It's apparently only $180. Maybe buy two of them...
That's listed for over a thousand Canadian dollars though...
Here's another (admittedly out of stock) also from amazon canada for a tenth of the price.
