Yeah, great isn't it?
Oh, I use the following to sync Fastmail with my Android phone:
Both are rock solid.
I use these so that other apps can access the contacts and rather than relying on the Fastmail app for calendar. Lets me use IM clients, calendar widgets, etc, without hassle.

Ist mir bisher nicht aufgefallen. Ich ändere aber nur sehr selten Telefonbucheinträge und verwende keinen Kalender.
Syncing what? I'm having success with Android.
My current setup:
Linux | Android | Server | |
---|---|---|---|
Contacts | vdirsyncer + khard | CardDAV-Sync | Baïkal |
Calendar | vdirsyncer + Khal | CalDAV-Sync | Baïkal |
Todo | vdirsyncer + todoman | CalDav-Sync + OpenTasks | Baïkal |
Files | Seafile | Synchronize Ultimate | Seafile server |
iSync + Mutt | Gmail :/ | Gmail :( |
I've haven't gotten around to self-hosting my email again. "Soon".
edit and replace Baïkal with DavMail, and I'm using the same Linux software at work against Exchange server (but with IMAP for email, as we have that enabled). Also using Nine for the exchange account on Android. It's a better app than the gmail one, but unfortunately only does exchange.
Try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.dmfs.carddav.Sync for contact group support.
> Google Sync is absent, which means you have to sync/restore every contact, message and setting manually.
I think you can stop at "contact". Google doesn't sync my messages, and I've never had anything good come out of them syncing my settings.
You can sync your contacts in a million other places, including self-hosted if you want. Check out this great little app: CardDAV-sync.
Same applies to the calendar btw: CalDAV-sync.
