I just had to hop in and say that I happened to search for this today and applying rwojo 's Sieve Code worked perfectly. Thank you so much!
Steps for those wanting to duplicate this:
https://www.fastmail.com/settings/filters and login as u
On the bottom right of the main canvas area, click "Edit Custom Sieve Code"
You will see several text boxes, some that are read only and others that are read-write and say 'enter your custom code here'
Copy/pasta the first code block from rwojo's messages (https://old.reddit.com/r/fastmail/comments/pjr3u8/help_sieve_how_to_dynamically_filtersort_emails/hbye6rj/) into the first writeable text box.
In that text box, change "<your primary email>" to actually be whatever your email is, preserving the quotes. Example: ""
Press enter a few times in that same text box to give yourself a few lines.
Go back to the reddit post and copy/paste the second code block into the bottom of the same text box you were just in
Go back to the reddit post and copy/paste the final code block into a different text box. This one is the one that is at the bottom of the page.
You are done. Send a test email to one of your aliases and give fastmail a minute to process it. provided it doesn't hit any other rules u may have made for it, Fastmail should create the folder and drop the email in there.
Bonus. If you use Thunderbird and it is not showing the newly created folders even though Fastmail is, you can have Thunderbird re-download folders by collapsing and expanding the folder list root node in the sidebar (aka the thing that says <> and has all of the folders like Inbox etc inside it). And if that doesn't work, restarting Thunderbird will also work.
It is covered in the Fastmail help:
At Fastmail, you can sync a calendar from your account at another service, such as Google or iCloud, while being able to view and manage it from your Fastmail account. This lets you make changes at either service and the calendar will stay up to date..
Check the important note in Fastmail help, you need to check that your Google calendars are exposed for CalDAV here
Changed from a protonmail plus account to FM about a year ago: absolutely no regrets.
I went the same route as you, figuring out I don't need something as over the top as protonmail (and as pricey).

First went with mailbox.org because of the added aliases (25) but the lack of mobile app, making 2FA useless, made me gave up on it and I ended up with FM: lots of aliases, easy to set up custom domain, very good apps, snooze, import & fetch tools work fairly well, etc.
Fastmail is great and the UI is well-designed. It's also super easy to set up DNS, if you want to use your own domain.
Mailbox is also fine, though using your own domain requires more steps, but is cheaper if price is a consideration.
Although they recommend CardDAV-Sync, I would recommend DAVx5 since I've been using it with Nextcloud and FastMail with no problems. It's available on F-Droid for free, and on Google Play for $4.69.
If you want an encrypted at rest email provider look at https://www.privacytools.io/
FastMail is an email provider. They are great for that (I use them and pay for their service as my main email provider). Standards based, run by good people, very large, have been around for a while, and not expensive. Much better than Gmail in my opinion: Google wants me to use their email to see my emails and use my behavior in their system as data. FastMail wants me to pay them a subscription to use their service. They don’t use me as their data. Two different goals and services.
The OP question was if forwarding emails from Gmail prevents Google from seeing them. The answer is no because all emails land on Gmail servers anyways and them are forwarded somewhere else. that is regardless on whether they go to FastMail or any other service, including an encrypted at rest email provider. They see them as they go through them.
If you are however looking for full encrypted communication, keep in mind email, by nature and design, is not encrypted and a standards base communication means. Using a service from the encrypted email providers isn’t perfect either because when you email your friends with accounts at gmail, google will see that too. I use ProtonMail for ocasional private emails.
The link above is a good read, but only if you want to go all the way into a privacy focused Internet life. To me, I started about 6 months ago, and it is a journey. In the end, it depends on who you trust.
Have fun.
It's nice. But I still want to see an Attachments Overview. Posteo is now offering it. https://posteo.de/en/blog/new-at-posteo-attachment-browser-with-photo-stream It would be nice to have a stream of all your files or images in one place. With this sidebar now, you can only view files in the current conversation.
Customer support answered with the following:
>> I've tried setting up two other users, however, and neither of them see the shared contacts in Apple Contacts on their macOS desktop machines. Private contacts appear immediately and seem to work fine, but the shared contacts do not appear at all. One user is an admin, and the other is not.
This is due to a Mac limitation. Mac OS only allows you to configure either the Personal address book or the Shared address book. It appears the users have added their Personal address book which is why they find it to be in sync.
If they would like to configure the Shared address book, please ask them to change the CardDav username to [email protected] instead of [email protected].

Hope that clarifies your concern. Do let me know if you need any further assistance from us, I'll be happy to help.
To clarify, look here https://www.fastmail.com/help/ourservice/security.html
Our main servers are located at New York Internet (NYI) in Bridgewater, New Jersey, USA.
Our secondary sites at NYI's Seattle location and with Switch Datacentres in Amsterdam have equivalent physical security.
> But if someone has my password, they could change this anyways.
There's an account recovery tool that takes this possibility into account

I can confirm that Fastmail migration capabilities make moving from Gmail and Outlook super easy. Indeed, you will want to activate labels in Fastmail before the migration in order to have multiple labels in Fastmail. Additionally, Fastmail has a handy duplicate removal tool which you can try after migration https://www.fastmail.com/go/cleanfolders But be careful using it.
> How do I sync contacts with Fastmail and the Contacts app on my phone?
You can use any app that syncs with CardDAV servers. DAVx5 is a good one that works for contacts and calendar: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=at.bitfire.davdroid
> What do I do with Google Photos?
I plan to keep using Google Photos for the search capability and OneDrive for backups in the original quality because the storage is way cheaper. I've been using both for quite a few years now, and OneDrive's features for photos are not on par with Google Photos.
When I used Android I used this calendar app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.withouthat.acalendar&gl=US
FM via Davx5 will sync to it nicely, and I would get all my alerts from aCaledar
I've been looking around for a private and cheap domains as I'll only be using them for masked emails. Cloudflare seems like a good option. Costs about $4/year and has Whois protection. FM also has a guide on setting them up. Does that sound good?
>Which is a bit of a lie as that’s before tax.
I have several domains and only 1 user account. I have a personal domain and several business ones.
Just go to Fastmail > Domains and click "+ Add domain". I'm not sure where you're getting stuck.
A good point with Enpass is that you can save your password data to the cloud, and by using WebDAV you can save that data to the Fastmail file storage:
https://www.enpass.io/docs/manual-desktop/sync.html#supported-clouds
It scans about once/day (https://www.fastmail.com/help/receive/stopspam.html#spamfolders), so leaving it for 24 hours should be enough.
I think it works best on folders that are intended to permanently hold messages, like Archive. For individual emails, correcting the spam folder (by marking messages a spam, or by marking non-spam that ends up in the Junk Mail folder as non-spam) is probably most effective.
If I understand you correctly, I don't think it'll be an issue via IMAP mode.
If you load Fastmail in labels mode via IMAP, it won't duplicate messages as independent messages in Fastmail. Copying or moving a message from one IMAP folder to another will just adjust the labels on that message.
That's all covered at Labels & IMAP.
Does that article address what you were hoping to do via IMAP?
I think overall though to your original post question, there's two routes:
Delete
is used.Do these two options cover what you were originally trying to address?
Other labels will be retained, for example in these scenarios (I think this is all of them):
Archive
button (removed from the special Inbox label),Remove Label
button, orX
on a specific label in the label list. However if you delete the message via the Delete
button it will be moved to your trash and the message will not be visible from any of the labels attached to the message. They are still attached, but you can't even see the labels anymore on the message unless you Undelete
.
With IMAP, you just need to understand usage of move vs copy in your client, more on the Labels & IMAP help topic. Basically move will remove all other labels and attach the new one for the destination, and copy will just add a new label.
When I click on "Inbox" in the left hand menu, I'd like to be taken to the unread section (ie: https://www.fastmail.com/mail/Inbox/?filter=unread) instead of the the read/unread inbox.
The Fastmail mobile apps do not support U2f/Security Keys (see here: https://www.fastmail.com/help/account/2fa.html and scroll down to the section that says "Which one is right for me?", Look at the bullets under "Authentication App")
The mobile apps ONLY support the use of Authenticator Apps.
Many mobile apps do not support both keys and 2FA. Use application passwords. You can generate them here: https://www.fastmail.com/settings/security/devicekeys
It shouldn't be less secure if you setup you mobile phone properly (biometry is on, etc).
What's also really nice about FastMail (vs. e.g. Gmail) is that if for some reason this filtering capability does not meet your needs, you can get really fancy by writing your own explicit sieve conditions directly:
1) I also use Thunderbird primarily and have not found a way to do this with Thunderbird. I have found a way to do this using Outlook using CalDav Synchronizer. It took me a while to configure it. The only downsides are it doesn't sync groups and it doesn't properly transfer some info like instant messengers and of course it requires you to launch Outlook every now and then to sync.
Once everything is configured with the accounts, just set the Gmail account to sync "Outlook <- Server (Replicate)" and the Fastmail account to "Outlook -> Server (Replicate)"
2) Davx5 should work like other people mentioned. Other options are a pair of Android apps called CalDav-Sync and CarDav-Sync.
3) Go to Fastmail Calendar Settings, and click "Export" on the calendar you want. Copy the CalDAV URL.
In Thunderbird, File > New Calendar > On the Network > CalDAV (If you don't see the menu at the top press the Alt key.) This may require the Lightning extension if it's not already installed.
Paste the previously copied CalDAV URL into the Location field.
4) I'm not sure.
5) An addon called TBSync and another supporting addon called "Provider for CalDAV and CardDAV".
I could be wrong, if I'm not completely understanding you. But you can still adjust the sending names of an alias from Sending Identities. It does look like Cloaked Redirects has gone away, it's missing the option from the Settings.
Unfortunately that's been a long-running problem with the iOS mail app for years now. If I remember correctly, the "smart mailbox" for flagged emails doesn't actively scan IMAP subfolders when it updates its list of messages. Apple Discussions
You might double check to make sure the mail app configured your IMAP prefix correctly just to be sure (Fastmail IMAP Prefix), but that's usually done automatically when first set it up.
Settings >> Accounts >> I tap the account, and I see my Name, Email, Description (and below that the Incoming Mail Server, etc).
But Email, I can't tap on it. It has my email, but it's greyed out.
The email was set up by me. This is my personal email. BUT, it was set up using Fastmails automatic configuration tool here: https://www.fastmail.com/help/clients/iphone.html?u=3f794083
They are integrated into just the one app as far as I know. I like the app, but prefer to use my phones built-in e-mail client and calendar. This way my FM account is "integrated" into my phone, and can utilize all of the functionality (clicking on an e-mail link, setting an appointment, etc.) that my phone offers. Same on my tablet.
I still keep the app handy - if I am looking at a large amount of e-mail at one time, it's easier to use and MUCH faster.
Instructions can be found at: https://www.fastmail.com/help/clients/applist.html
I just verified this.
Using an unrelated mailbox.org account that is not tied to Fastmail at all, I sent an email to "." I have not created an alias in Fastmail for "." When I reply to the email from Fastmail's iOS app or Fastmail's website, Fastmail automatically changes my From address to "."
I did the same test with a message sent to "." Same result--Fastmail automatically changed the From address to "" even though that is not an alias I have set up.
As far as I know, the only setting that you have to change to make this happen is to set up a catch all for your domain within Fastmail. To do so, you create the alias *@mydomain.tld. See instructions here:
https://www.fastmail.help/hc/en-us/articles/1500000277942-Catchall-Wildcard-aliases
The fastmail app on android supports all, but is somewhat limited (probably why you use Aquamail instead. I do to, btw).
The answers to your other questions are all "CalDAV" and "CardDAV". Pretty much everything else uses them to sync contacts and calendars. But Google doesn't, and Android doesn't have it built-in.
You'll need to use something like davx5 to sync CalDAV (Calendars) and CardDAV (Contacts) to Android. There are other alternatives to davx5, but I'm pretty happy with it's functionality and reliability. You continue to use the regular Calendar and Contacts apps, you'll just have new accounts in them.
I'm not a thunderbird user, so I can't really help with adding CardDav/CalDAV (although I think there was an extension to make that easier).
If you migrate your contacts and Calendar to Fastmail, you may have issues with the google assistant, in theory. For my purposes, it hasn't affected me. I can still phone people by name even though the contacts are not in Google. I only recently gained the ability for google to use my calendar, and tbh the functionality sucks and I'm not missing anything.
I recently did what you're discussing and didn't have too much difficulty. I migrated my contacts and calendar by using google/fastmail's import/export tools to export them from my google account, import them into Fastmail, and then I purged everything from the google account to clean things up.
The only speedbump I ran into was the fact that Fastmail's mobile app can't seem to sync contacts or calendars to the native android contacts/calendar apps. I ended up finding the DAVx⁵ app to solve that problem, it's basically just a little app that quietly handles synchronizing contacts and calendar in the background. It is a paid app (around 5$ USD in the US play store), but it's worked great for me and is open source so I feel comfortable recommending it. You do have to make setup an app password in Fastmail to get logged in though, your fastmail account password will not work.
