Why are some people who paid lifetime verification still getting the paywall? Plenty of those complaints over on the Google Play Store reviews for the CS app.
Also, why didn't CS specify in their blog posts that users who are verified through hosting will not have the paywall until that verification expires? I don't see this on the blog either.
Edit: I've added more info about couchsurfing and added more resources for your situation.
I hope some things here help out.
Not sure if it's been said yet but try /r/couchsurfing
Don't immediately trust links strangers put out there to download (something like Chester with a van and candy) but the two app links below are also at the very bottom of the couch surfing site.
Here are some other useful subreddits.

Good luck!!!
I think KC Grad still hosts language cafe events, where people get grouped based on the language they speak/want to practice and have drinks.
You can also download Couchsurfing app and see if there are any local meetups for travelers and hosts.
Same with Meetup which has some events like workshops and pubcrawls.
It's like Facebook events. I don't really know, I don't use it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.couchsurfing.mobile.android
