Here's my current list of contenders. There'll never be another Austin, but I've made plenty of reconnaissance trips, and in my opinion, these towns capture at least some of the old Austin vibe in their own respective ways. (For me, "old" Austin means from around 1979 through around 1996 or so. Your milage may vary.) There are certainly other worthy towns out there, but these are the ones I have visited enough times to get a pretty good feel for them:
Tulsa, OK
Bend, OR
Chattanooga, TN
Bellingham, WA
Santa Fe, NM
Bloomington, IN
Alpine, TX
Missoula, MT
Duluth, MN
Sioux Falls, SD
Cedar Rapids, IA
San Angelo, TX
Omaha, NE

So my "Nextdoor.com" feed has been blowing up for a few weeks now. I suspect there is a Facebook, or Telegram, or whatever platform, that has groups of folks that then have decided to post on other sites with "reasonable" sounding reports and not a flood gate, but enough to get folks to the Polls with the second thought of: "Well, I don't know, I better vote Yes just in case"
Of course this would not be the first time something like this has happened...
I moved here from Madison a very long time ago and still keep in touch with a few folks from there. This is true. The vibe is similar -- kinda liberal, kinda weird, seat of the state government, seat of the main university campus... but the winters are fucking brutal. It gets into your bones and there are weeks where you just can't get warm. People starting their cars and letting them idle for 10 minutes in the driveway just to get the heater going is a thing. You will learn the many uses for this thing and how fucked you are if it ever gets misplaced or breaks: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Snow-Brush-Ice-Scraper/dp/B071F6W896/
The worst part, though -- at least back in the day when I was there -- the only Mexican restaurant around was a pathetic chain called Chi-Chis.
If it sounds like I'm ragging on the place, seriously, I'm not and I do miss it. Never again for a place with that much winter, though.
Put a bat box on your property. Or in the preserve behind your house but, shh, don’t tell anybody.

You can find cheaper ones or just build your own.
I'm one of the most socially anxious people ever, but I never understood why people worry about the effects of bagging their own groceries.
Just tell them you'd prefer to bag your groceries; they'll be happy to move to another register. It's not going to hurt their feelings; and no, you're not a lazy sack if you don't want to bag your own groceries, but you may get some glares if you tie up the line waiting for the cashier to do if they didn't get help from a bagger; feel free to help speed the process along, but only if you want.
Back around 1986, customer service was such a big deal that they reduced staff at many stores for an offsite meeting to hype our new effort: every customer with more than one bag would receive a carryout; period.
It lasted one day before enough customers told us to fuck off. Meanwhile, Safeway and Tom Thumb, while they didn't encourage tips, certainly looked the other way when customers offered tips. The Tom Thumb on Exposition in Tarrytown was a great place to receive tips, but I often declined them since I was a manager.
H-E-B also used to teach employees HOW to bag, what order to bag, and what items don't go together. I feel like that training has been completely abandoned.
Nowadays, I have half-a-dozen of these and try to bag groceries myself if I'm not still unloading my cart. If I set up four of these at the end of the register, I'm typically waiting on the cashier to scan faster.
Now I'm wondering if that's making them feel bad ... :-)
... and you know what, while it's not your job, on your way in the store, ESPECIALLY if you plan to use a cart, bring one (or two) in from the lot; bonus if you pick it up from a mom with a cart full of kids who just put the last bag into her car.
I have a copy of this if you wanna read it and REALLY blow your mind, or if you're an Audible member I've got a ton of credits and will gladly gift you a copy, heh.
You might be aware but just in case... "To get spray paint off a tree without harming the tree you can try trunk paint, taking a wire bristle brush to scrape off (if bark is thick), you can also make a paste with a dark soil to cover the paint until it wears away. Using anything chemical will damage the tree." link
We use curbside and don't have maggot problems. I use compostable bags I got from Amazon and the free under-the-sink container from the city. Tie off the bags and put them in the bin every day or so and it works great.
I used these push button switches with a LED “on” indicator to alleviate any chance of turning them on inadvertently.

> How would anyone know the gift shop kept $5000 just lying around?
Who says the thief knew? Maybe they just broke in hoping to take what they could. Or maybe they did know- what is fishy about an insider being involved? I bet that's not so unusual.
> How would they know where the hard drives are? Why aren't the drives that the wireless security cameras record to housed off-site?
Austin zoo's gift shop isn't that big. I imagine the security system was in plain sight once you opened enough doors and cabinets, and why wouldn't you check all the doors and cabinets?
> Why aren't the drives that the wireless security cameras record to housed off-site?
Okay, that's incompetent - but again, not so unusual. It takes expertise to set up and maintain a proper security system. Most people who don't have that expertise, don't know that they don't have it.
> Unrelated but the Austin Zoo rakes in 1.5 million in revenue a year, pays no taxes, and yet its financials are a mess. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/10-things-zoos-wont-tell-you-1306528026434[1]
That article says that in 2007, Austin zoo's financials were a mess, but Patti fixed it. Where are you getting those other numbers?
My wife used to work there, and was very involved in the place, and 1.5 million in revenue is a little hard to believe. As far as "paying no taxes" - well yeah, it's a non-profit. There are thousands of them in Austin alone. What's shady about that?
Austin zoo isn't the best zoo, but it ain't bad, and the people there seem to do a good job and to genuinely care. I guess I don't understand the hate you seem to have for the place?

jbjjbjbb's link is probably the best one on the internet for lost airports. As you can see it turns out there were more than a few airports in the area you are talking about, OP.
According to this great book called Austin, Cleared for Takeoff: Aviators, Businessmen, and the Growth of an American City, which I recommend, the first airport in Austin was actually Camp Mabry. But the first planes landed where they could, where ever there was an open field. The first airplane in Austin was a famous cross-country flyer named Calbraith P. Rodgers, who crashed into a hilly neighborhood called Ridgetop in 1911 that today is roughly on the other side I35 from Capital Plaza.

As someone who worked for a local VPN company, online anonymity doesn't exist and a VPN will take you so far. Take EarthVPN for example... they were a "no-logs" VPN... didn't change the fact that the data center hosting their servers had access to all the metadata and logs. They ended up being able to identify someone who made cyber-bomb threats over their VPN and have them imprisoned.
VPNs are great... but they only get you so far.

The sticky traps work well to catch adults, but these gnats breed so quickly that some of them tend to be able to lay eggs before getting caught on a trap.
The nuclear option with houseplants is imidacloprid granules. You add the granules to the soil, water the plant, and it gets absorbed by the plant's tissues. Provides protection for a few months and will kill any bugs (gnats, aphids, or otherwise) that feed on or live on the plant.
Do not use this on plants that will be going outside. Imidacloprid is almost too effective for its own good, and will also kill bees and other pollinators. This should be used as a last resort, and for indoor houseplants only!
This is the map that was used for the original auction of city lots in 1839. There is a good book called Seat of Empire: The Embattled Birth of Austin, Texas by Jeff Kerr which goes through a good retelling of that first auction in Chapter 9. I've posted a bit I copied from it here before.

One of the more notable practices of the species is their ability to adjust liter size based on predatory pressure. IE...You kill them and the females respond by having larger litters.
They're called swangers and they're the big fad going on in Houston right now. I've been noticing them more and more where I live (east of town) over the last year or so.

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for but I'm gonna do it anyways: /r/Loseit is a GREAT resource for this type of thing. Also start an account at MyFitnessPal and track your daily food intake.
Trust me when I say that this works. I gained over 35 lbs when I was out with a broken leg. Simple calorie counting and a bit of body exercise has led to 20 lbs dropped in 40 days (would've been more but those damn holidays got in the way). You don't have to look for massive loss/gains in order to be successful. Relying on someone else to motivate you is a crutch but that's seriously just my opinion and not a jab at you. :)
Good luck and get it done! Educating yourself about healthy choices is the first step.
Totally not answering your question, but if you're sick of using an FM transmitter, but don't want to swap your radio, you can use an FM bypass/injector/modulator. Basically, it's a box that sits between your car's antenna and the radio, then overrides the signal for a specific station.
Your radio keeps working normally, but when you tune to a specific station, it'll be your phone. Since it's not actually transmitting, you don't have to fight with local radio signals.
Here's one on Amazon for $26 with decent reviews: https://www.amazon.com/iSimple-IS31-Antenna-Modulator-Aftermarket/dp/B002U5XPBE
One of the first things I ever bought after I moved to Austin was a simple shower arm height extension.
It's been moved to every place I've ever lived, paired with a wand/head to even give it more reach/spray modes. Best bathroom investment I've made other than an always on [tower] fan to keep the moisture down in old construction.
You can find them at any hardware stores if you need to get it today. Grab some teflon tape to ensure a proper seal, as it'll be threading in inside the wall where you likely won't notice a small leak.

Don't let /r/Austin scare you. We're miserable cunts on this sub, but we're not this mean in person.
It's gonna be hot. And if it rains, hot and wet. It's not going to reach tropical proportions, but it's gonna suck, regardless.
It might rain where you are. It might be 10 miles away. I see 40%. Which means 40% of the area under the radar is gonna get wet, and with a 250 mile diameter (as I understand it), meh. I dunno. No one knows. It might flood. It might whimper out. I mean, it's been years since we've had a good, sustained thunderstorm (at least in North Austin, South gets 'em all the time). Oh well.

This is a good question, and I can only answer with a link that says pet waste should go in the trash:
Dumping your unbagged cat litter into a dumpster seems like a terrible idea, though. How about compostable, decomposable bags that are often used for composting? Like these? https://smile.amazon.com/Primode-Compostable-ASTMD6400-Biodegradable-Certified/dp/B06WD5JY67
I'd love a more comprehensive and informed answer.
I like the unscented DUDE Face Wipes. They're thicker than some of the others I've tried and I haven't had any issues with them shredding.
As another poster mentioned, compostable bags have been a huge plus. We basically just tie off the top and toss it in the bin so the bin itself never gets a layer of food scraps (we use these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W2M127Y/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1).
Also, be sure to take it out weekly if you aren't already.
Shitheads like you work really hard to keep your victim complex going. We live in a civil society, I hate to break it to you, and part of being in a civil society is ensuring our kids get a good education, ensuring that people aren't left in the dust by "economic reality" (I don't think jackasses like you understand what the reality is), making sure people have a living wage and ensuring that people don't start because of, again, "economic reality."
You people should really go back and read -- I mean, really read -- your bible, The Wealth of Nations. You'll see in it, if you've actually read it, that proto-arch-capitalist Smith explained that these measures needed to be put in place by governments in order to defray some of the social cost that comes along with having... "economic realities."
But I know you won't. You've dug your heels in, and you'll stubbornly justify your ideology without actually looking at the reality of the situation. Sociopaths are known to do that sort of thing.
If you're interested in attending another public lecture, one that is more focused on answering the question of "well what can I do?", Katharine Hayhoe is going to be at the Paramount Theater on Feb 3.

I never liked Gov. Goodhair but the charges against him were ridiculous, and you can find plenty of left-wing law professors who agree.
Not really. It is pretty basic as long as you have thought about it for a minute. No one is afraid to have a discussion about it, but instead can generally understood that A&M has no reason or need to host this, especially with the leader issuing veiled threats and alluding to the Charleston incident.
If they want to gather in the middle of nowhere, go for it. If they are intentionally trying to disrupt A&Ms campus, as it seems they desire to with their "Today Charleston" shit, then A&M is allowed to tell them to fuck off.
They are not being held to a crime or being told it is illegal to speak there, they are being told the university is not willing to let them on campus. Just because it is a public university does not mean the university has to let anyone on campus.
"The Supreme Court affirmed this tenet in a 1983 case, ruling that “the First Amendment does not guarantee access to property simply because it is owned or controlled by the government,” allowing rules and restrictions."
I would not count on being able to commute from downtown to Parmer Lane in less than 30 minutes. I'm seeing that Google estimates the drive would be around that during rush hour, but I live in North Loop and it consistently takes me at least 20 minutes to get downtown, in bad traffic up to 45 mins.
My advice is always to get a bed at a hostel or a room in an AirBnB, depending on your budget, for a week or so when you first move here. Check out different neighborhoods and try the commute. The way Austin is laid out you don't need to be downtown to be walking distance to entertainment, there's lots of neighborhoods that'll fit your requirements. I think the AirBnB neighborhood guide for Austin is fairly well done.

There are a TON of video game companies to work for though in Austin:
It was Waterloo's. Used to be their vinyl annex then they turned it into a video store. Waterloo Video.

I used to work at a local animal shelter, and I swear every woman who came through there with the "I'd like to speak to a manager" haircut felt compelled to make a remark to me about how many pit bulls (by which they meant any dog with short hair and a large head) were in the shelter. I mean WTF, would you go to an orphanage and be like, "Ugh, they only have poor orphans. Excuse me, where are the rich orphans?"
If you have Facebook, join and post in the Austin Lost Pets group. Also, if you're on Nextdoor, make sure to post there as well as that will alert people in the neighborhood to be on the lookout for the dog.
I feel like an old fart recommending this but Facebook Marketplace if you’ve got Facebook. I always see people who are overloaded with spider* plants selling them for as low as $2 for smaller starters to $30 giant “I’ve had this for 5+ years but I’m moving” one

Where can I buy some ear caps that protect the edge of your ear in person? Google says that my only options are online through Amazon and Walmart, but I find it hard to believe that no one nearby carries them.
I need them, like, today.
Edit: Like these. Also, I checked Sally Beauty first, but no dice.
Edit 2: Ended up biting the bullet and ordering from Amazon. These are surprisingly less comfortable than one would think.
Just did some quick research on your suggestion...would you suggest something like Mosquito Dunks?
https://www.amazon.com/Mosquito-Dunks-102-12-Killer-Pack/dp/B0000AH849?th=1
Edit: hmmm. From that product page:
Q: Where can I place these if i have no standing water in my backyard or front yard and how many for a total 1/4 acre?
A: I think they're designed to solve the problem of mosquitoes breeding in standing water. If you don't have standing water, you don't have the problem these were designed to solve.
Some mention putting out buckets of water etc. I believe that's just creating a problem so you can solve it.
Nah this guy has been posting "cutting edge activism" since 2013 at least. I wonder if APD already knows about him. But honestly that current page looks like a job for Homeland Security. That and I'm pretty sure Homeland Security doesn't give a fuck about the Perfect Privacy LLC TOS and client privacy protections anyway.

True, however, from what I have seen in this particular area the worst offenders tend to ride stripped down fixed gear bikes lacking stock reflectors. The style is indicative of fixie culture. Would you not agree?
As terrible as Nextdoor can be, they do have a Help Map: https://nextdoor.com/help_map/
You might also try posting on Nextdoor to see if a neighbor will be neighborly and lend a hand.
You're missing a lot of Austin. All the way up to at least Parmer & Lakeline is Austin: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=parmer+lane+%26+lakeline,+austin&hl=en&ll=30.3865,-97.608719&spn=0.510581,1.056747&sll=30.504378,-97.816861&sspn=0.254983,0.528374&t=h&hnear=W+Parmer+Ln,+Austin,+Williamson,+Texas&z=11
Parts on Lake Travis are as well: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=The+Oasis,+Comanche+Trail,+Austin,+TX&hl=en&sll=30.3865,-97.608719&sspn=0.510581,1.056747&oq=the+oas&t=h&hq=The+Oasis,&hnear=Comanche+Trail,+Austin,+Travis,+Texas&z=15
Why not include the other suburbs, like Cedar Park and Round Rock? You already have several places that are not Austin on your map, such as Del Valle.
Google Maps is your friend. You can see some of the remains just off Walnut Creek Park Rd. (look just southwest of the temple).
Stuff like McDonald's is the market its in though, you can see the survey here where it beat almost every other place. I like In n Out (although i prefer whataburger) I just don't understand Texas' circlejerk of hatred for it.
Get the free pass and check it out. If you like it then go to Costco and buy the 2 year membership for 369.00. Even if you don't do the full 2 years you still save a bunch vs $40/month
You're heat-adverse? That settles it, then. It's hard to get around the fact that we have had years with 90 days over 100F and average summer dewpoints well into the mid 70s. If you like to be active outdoors, then its going to be a huge adjustment April through September.
(To be clear, there's lots to like, as well -- but I wouldn't fault anyone for calling this a dealbreaker. I exercise outside 1-2 hours a day and it can be absolutely horrible during the summer.)
Taken from Weather.com's page for Austin weather trends.
EDIT - Some of the comments are talking about climate change. This is not an agenda-driven post. It's just a neat weather fact. Jfc, people.
Cedars are hardly Texas wide, and are in fact very geographically relevant to Austin. Cedars exist primarily in the Hill Country, in which Austin sits.
In that light, the article was pertinent to Austin for at least three reasons:
financial assistance could result in increased removal of cedars which would have a direct impact on the groundwater situation in Central Texas and Austin. The aquifer mentioned in the article is huge, covered in cedars, and includes the Austin area
financial assistance could result in increased removal of cedars which would have a direct impact on amount of cedar pollen in the Austin area
a lot of people living in Austin also own land out in the Hill Country. This article applies directly to these Austinites, and they'd be extremely interested about financial assistance for clearing cedar.
ha, anyone who cares to can easily get into your wep and wpa2 router anyways. They should be checking that we all have pass phrases that aren't dictionary words, or predictable permutations thereof.
Among the most frustrating and rage-inducing things humans can do to one another is not live up to a person's predetermined expectations.
It sounds like you came here expecting metafilter quality posts and instead got craigslist mixed with yelp and a local news affiliate.
All I can say is perhaps if you lowered your standards by hanging around a place like 4chan or youtube comments then reddit would seem a little more tolerable because you'd see that it isn't just here; inane shit gets posted most everywhere. Other than that, OP, you should probably just stay off the internet if sites like this are making you noticeably angry.
Take a walk around your apartment complex and look for exterior outlets. Do it on a weekend when the office staff isn't there if you're worried. Alternately, if you can find an outside light fixture you can access, there's also light socket outlets. Outside of a generator, I'd be surprised if there's a portable power station under $500 that can handle the load of a vacuum motor. Maybe try a power inverter if you think your car's electrical system can handle it.
Nobody reasonable should care if you use a penny's worth of electricity for half an hour. If your place has outlets on the patios, pick a person that looks cool and offer $5 to plug in for a bit.
You can buy loratadine (generic name for Claritin) on Amazon for a similar price: GoodSense Allergy Relief Loratadine Tablets, 10 mg, 365 Count costs $12.49.
I’d spend a little more, personally. Around $70 to $100 gets you a good mix of quality and features.
I use an A119c and would recommend it to anyone. 1440p, motion detection, capacitor instead of battery, GPS receiver and mounts directly to the windshield. I can’t even see it behind the rearview from the driver’s seat in my car.
I bought mine from this vendor: Amazon Link
(borderline atheist) Jew here and Austinite. We exist, don't worry. If you really run out of luck I'll meet up in a park with you and blast a shofar sound on a bluetooth speaker or something. Apparently they're not that expensive? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H8QHI36/ref=cm\_sw\_em\_r\_mt\_dp\_RbLyFb06S5QWG Didn't know until searching for now, already ordered one
That's just normal mold. Spray it with moldex or a spray bottle with bleach and water. If that is your AC drain inside the house get some of these. You use I think a quarter of a tablet and do it once a month. If it is that, that's probably from it being clogged and slow dripping over.
I was really looking forward to seeing this performance, but feel vaguely happy to witness a pouting Danzig. Here's what one of the event organizers had to say about it:
>-glenn says it's freezing in austin and he can't go on. says it's going to be 28 degrees tonight and he won't perform (keep in mind, it's currently 71 and sunny with a night forecast of maybe 50+). he says we have to move the show/festival inside if we want him to play (obviously, that's not possible).
and
>-we rent stage heaters (no other bands, public enemy, mcd, passion pit, etc need or want heaters on stage...it's warm up there and not cold out) for glenn per demand, as well as bring in an onsite doctor to make him happy and be there if his cold doesn't go away.
and
>-glenn arrives at 7:45 (half hour before showtime, they go on at 8:15 exactly and have a 90 min set...park curfew by the city/police is 10pm sharp)...when he arrives, he says he's not going to play. says he doesn't like how the banners are hung on stage and doesn't like the lighting or stage size (all this was advanced in email and phone well in advance and the band/crew loaded in mid day and were happy with it and said it would work...stage wasn't small at all). he wouldn't leave his trailer to go look at the stage, though, so the lighting company drew up specs for him to look at of the stage lighting 50 feet from his trailer and brought it to him to look over and prove him wrong.
If you're highly allergic to grass and weed pollen you'll feel pretty shitty after it rains regardless of current "low" counts. 🤧
*"Rain often washes pollen out of the environment, but first, it bursts pollen particles, spreading allergens farther..."
"During a rainstorm, the pollen in your environment gets saturated and fractures, releasing small particles into the air at a much higher concentration."*

I'm also wondering how this happens. I'd be curious to find out more. The system is still a nightmare and the underlying costs are out of control, but the ACA has done a lot to prevent these types of events from happening.
Under the ACA, if you lose your job-based insurance, you qualify to sign-up immediately for a marketplace plan, and they cannot deny you based on a pre-existing condition or injury. In 2016, the out of pocket maximum for a marketplace plan is $6850 (https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/out-of-pocket-maximum-limit/).
So the total cost should be limited to $6850 + monthly premiums for all medical care, right? This is obviously not a small amount of money but it also isn't $1mil. The sticking points I can think of are either some procedures/care is not covered by the plan (https://www.healthcare.gov/coverage/what-marketplace-plans-cover/), and the affordability of the monthly premiums while out of work. These plans may be more difficult to get the prosthetics through, as well?
But worse than via Reno. No one goes to Sacramento unless they're in politics. The San Francisco route it a good thing though, more competition among airlines can't hurt.
Hmmmm the person in the photo seems to be Horti and the user name is also Horti related. Something smells fishy here!
