Found d20 Calculator for our DnD gaming nights. You input rolls as if using a real calculator. Want 4d6+3? Press 4, then d6,then +3 and roll. You can also save and label rolls you need. Free with ads and only 1 saved roll. $0.99 for no ads and unlimited saves.
I was recently given an iPhone, and I've found the Lion's Den apps to be pretty useful. You'll need to enter everything - classes, creatures, equipment, races, spells, etc - manually from the PHB, or PM /u/Ceryliae with your email address to ask for access to the community Dropbox so you can import the XMLs. Definitely worth the few dollars for getting rid of ads.
If you're on Android, you'll only have access to their d20 calculator, though.
I use d20 Calculator, by Lion's Den. iOS | Android
I like that it has a nice, clean interface, and simple gesture controls; to get to saved dice rolls, just swipe over and it has both the Saved and Recent lists with nice big buttons. Tap on one of them, and it'll instantly switch back to the main view and roll that combo. Super simple for frequent skills/rolls like initiative, perception, etc. Plus, the large graphics mean the other players can see the rolls easily, which is largely why they trust me to use it.
It is "freemium", but honestly it's just $1 to hide ads and support the developer.
This is probably going to be the worst advice but this is what my group did.
I the dm read the players hand book that I downloaded off the internet. (Don’t worry I have bought the book now). If your lucky the players will read it too, but at least the dm has to. Had every player download this app the exact same app is on apple. Or you could by a few dice sets for $1 on ebay. Then ask each player what class they want to be, just briefly describe each class or send them a screen shot of the description. Then you make everyone’s characters (unless they read to book too then make them make it), low level. Match race to class for best stats.
Then just get in and play, it will be slow and it will be a learning process but it worked for me and my friends and we love it.
But honestly if you can find an experienced dm to dm that would be so much better.
I second this. D&D 5 Spellbook Cards is a great app, and I would also recommend another free app called simply d20 Calculator. It has a really nice UI and is great for doing multiple dice rolls quickly.
Also, I have the same DM screen from WotC, and while I think it's good the two middle panels don't get a lot of information across in the space it takes up. I recommend this custom 5e DM Screen; it fits a lot more info you're going to reference often in a smaller space. I just printed out the pages I wanted and taped them over the WotC DM screen.
The rest of the advice here is very good, so I'll suggest something different.
Consider electronic dice. There are some very good dice rolling Apps, this one is my favorite, and it can save time.
How will everyone be sitting? I screwed this up on our first game, we ended up standing at a bar. Seriously...
Notecards! Those little 3x5 notecards are the best thing ever for this game. Write down ideas as you have them, use them to keep order of combat turns, draw a quick map, or anything! Always right there for what you need.
Whatever you and your players enjoy doing is right. Do you like a map? Do you prefer dice rolling? Are you more into story telling? Everyone can just sit down and say what they like or would change, which results in a game that gets better with every session.
I started my first game ever, as a GM, last Halloween, and even though everything went wrong it was very fun! Now it's nearly a year later and our campaign has moved well along, XP disappeared, and our games get a little better with each session.
No, use a calculator and if you want, let people know of your condition.
You might even want to look at something like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lionsden.calculator
Found the iOS and Google Play links.
If you're struggling with math, check out d20 calculator if your DM will allow it. Super handy.
