Hews is my favorite.
It's open source, customizable, and also has some pretty unique features such as:
Viewing top posts by specific time ranges (e.g. Jan 2011->June 2011)
An 'auto summary' thing that'll automatically check for 'tldr' in the post and put it under the post title
Configure line height, font, etc through the UI
And some other stuff. It hasn't been updated recently but it still works perfectly, definitely recommend it.
Exactly - it's a major reason on why most of these never gain traction. There's a lot of unofficial apps on, say, HN (like Hews and Materialistic), but that's not really attractive for most people and they're not always completely reliable.

You can even narrow it down to top posts of specific timeframes
I have broken the rules of floating action button with my app Hews for Hacker News, using it to scroll down page by clicking/dragging. Posted a video demo and some thoughts on Android App Design community at G+. Well, lots negative feedback (maybe due to I didn't explain it well). But I think it's ok, cause MD only appeared for 1 year, there are lots of thing still changing (eg. fab menu didn't exist when it first came out). And plus, even Google breaks the rules sometime (Google Map use two fabs in one screen which is not recommanded, for example). So if you think the changing you made is good for UX, then just do it.
There's an excellent app called Hews for Hackernews. Ad-free, open source and lightweight.
