What is Reddit's opinion of HoloIRC?

Well… stick with me here… Slack in particular is really just a gussied up IRC. If you ran your own ircd, and had all your users connect via ZNC, you would have:

• Persistent connections, with the ability to see channel history on client reconnect
• Centralised logging (you'd need a log viewer/searcher)
• Bots, just the same as Slack (far more options in fact)
• Push notifications while clients are disconnected (this one needs a ZNC plugin but it works)

Then it all comes down to the clients. There are good web clients these days if you like, and many native options for pretty much every platform.

For mobile, iOS has Palaver which has excellent ZNC integration. On Android I like HoloIRC.

It's old, and it would certainly take more work than simply "install app", but you can get most of what people find useful about Slack using good ol' IRC and opensource software.

I've used HoloIRC before, i'm going to install it again today and see if it's still any good.
