This app uses the sensor to trigger the camera for taking photos/videos. Not very practical to me, but it is a proof of concept that the sensor can be used in other ways.
I'd like to see the fingerprint sensor turn off the screen, and maybe a double tap on the sensor to turn on the flashlight.
I'd love to see a section or for Fingerprint apps, even if it's not a full category, maybe just one of those lists on the main page of the store.
I think this would encourage more devs to find interesting ways to use the fingerprint scanner for more than just security, like this
Hey I know this is an old post but just wanted to let you know that I actually built an app that can do this! It is called Imprint and uses the fingerprint sensor to take photos and videos.
Introducing Imprint - Fingerprint Camera
I've just released my second app called Imprint which allows you to use your phone's fingerprint sensor to capture selfie photos and videos. No more straining to touch the on-screen button and possibly dropping your phone. This works the best with a rear-facing sensor like on the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X, but will work with any sensor that uses the Nexus Imprint API.
The app uses the Nexus Imprint API to recognize fingerprint touches, and it will trigger on any finger press, whether it is registered or not. This way, you can hand your phone off to anyone and they can still use it. Also, Imprint uses the new Camera2 API for the crispest possible photos and videos.
A few notes: The app requires Marshmallow or later to run, and is only available for devices that have the fingerprint sensor hardware.
Currently Imprint only supports the front-facing camera, but I am working on adding rear-camera support!
EDIT: I just pushed an update with rear-camera support! Check it out!
So far I've been fortunate to have the app features in a few tech blogs:
