>Do you need to activate the sim at all or it a case of slotting it into the phone and then typing the combination to subscribe to the data pack?
As far as I know, when you make your first call, you will be asked what language you prefer, and that would be all.
> What travel apps would you recommend?
I have tried Eway, and it seems pretty reliable for public transportation. Google maps works if you prefer to walk around.
>Is there a taxi app to get a taxi? Or do you just stand on the street and hail one?
There is an app called iTaxi (iOS version). I would not recommend to hail a taxi, as many unlicensed taxi cars can stop, and they could charge your trip considerable more. Usually there are some cabs near the most populated city sights, the licensed cars will have an yellow number plate, compared to other cars.
> What are the best bars/pubs to hang out in?
Hard for me to answer. Here you can find a small list of some popular pubs.
> What is the best Moldovan restaurant to try in Chisinau?
Again, depending on your taste and budget. TripAdvisor has a good list.
>Also, if anyone wants to hangout for a beer or two on the satuday
Unfortunately, I will not be in Chisinau these weekend, but hopefully someone from this subreddit will be able to show you around and have a beer with you, but as you probably have noticed, /r/Moldova is not a very active subreddit.

Eli-Pili, Brothers (Irish pub), Baker Street, Kozlovna. You could try Smokehouse, a place full of American owners/tourists/expats/food.
> Also, if anyone wants to hangout for a beer or two on the satuday, give me a shout! More than happy to while away a few hours over a few beers in some pub/bar (esp as I literally have nothing planned so have nothing but time on my hands!)
Not in Chișinău either.
