I use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.darkspawns.leafmanager&hl=en
Seems a bit quicker but more importantly works well in the background and has a widget so it's functionally much easier to use.
If you're on Android, try Leaf Manager. It's not perfect, but it doesn't block the UI while waiting for a response from Nissan's insanely slow servers
There are 3rd party apps that work better than the Nissan one.

Can't speak to the iOS app but have heard good reviews from others. The Android one is nice as it does the communication in the background and all the functionality is right there versus on different tabs that take forever to load on the Nissan app. It still takes 30sec-1min to update power level but you can set it to auto update when it loses bluetooth connection to car (when you stop driving) and auto update while charging. Personally I have no real need for the remote charge level monitoring but I love the remote climate control, so nice to just hit a button 5-10 min before I leave and have a warm/cool car waiting for me.
IMHO the connect is a nice feature to have, but not essential. I use it almost exclusively for turning on the climate control before leaving. So nice to have a warm or cool car to get into. The nissan app does suck, this one is much better if you have Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.darkspawns.leafmanager&hl=en
If you have an Android phone try out this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.darkspawns.leafmanager&hl=en
I've found it to be a little bit quicker than the Nissan app and it will work in the background so you can do other stuff with your phone. If you spend the $5 for the Pro version you get a nice homescreen widget and you can set it to auto update based on the BT connection to the car among other things. Much faster to use overall IMHO.

Problem solved. Doesn't necessarily speed up the operations (though they do feel faster), but they both allow asynchronous/background operations so it's not nearly as annoying.
I use Leaf Manager, works great for my needs. One button in the widget to turn on the climate control, auto updates battery percent 5 min after I stop the car.
Looks good so far, works for me in the US (though the charging screen seems to be stuck on updating). I'd suggest taking a look at this one and copying the feature set: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.darkspawns.leafmanager
Leaf Manager is no longer maintained and Android 8 broke the widget.
What I like most of those features:
Widget with climate control from home screen
Auto-update battery level based on losing Bluetooth connection with car (as you drive somewhere it sees the BT, you stop and BT disappears so update battery level as you are at destination).
Is the source posted somewhere? Throw it up on GitLab or GitHub
the nissan connect software is really kinda terrible but "LEAF Manager" for android is absolutely worth the five bucks or whatever it costs to unlock all the features. It gives you a home-screen widget with automatic updating to show your current charge level, and one-click to turn on cabin preconditioning.
There are third party apps that work better.

Can't speak to the iPhone app but the Android one is much better than Nissan's, not as flashy but the UI doesn't block and it's a little bit faster.
Personally I'm a fan of the Leaf Manager app. It's perhaps not got the best interface ever, but it's a hell of a lot more useable than the official one and does all the things I need it to do. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.darkspawns.leafmanager
If you have an Android phone I'd suggest using this Leaf Manger app instead of the Nissan one, it's a bit quicker but more importantly can work in the background so you can use the phone while Nissan takes their sweet time relaying the message to the car: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.darkspawns.leafmanager&hl=en
This is the ODB2 BT I got, works great: https://www.amazon.com/Panlong-Bluetooth-Diagnostic-Scanner-Android/dp/B00PJPHEBO/
Take a look at this for the L2 charging: http://www.instructables.com/id/313CONVERTING-A-2013-LEAF-LEVEL-1-12AMP-CHARGER-TO/
It is super easy to convert your existing L1 "charger" (it's not really a charger) to be both L2 and L1 capable, then you just need a 240v outlet (which is ~$100-$200 for an electrician to install, easy to DIY as well)
I have yet to do any public charging, but just signed up for a ChargePoint account, thanks to http://roev.org/ the account should work at ChargePoint, Blink, and EVgo station which is 90%+ of public stations. Maybe someone else can comment how well it works and if it's still a good idea to sign up for multiple provider accounts.
I also really like the Leaf Manager app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.darkspawns.leafmanager&hl=en
Way faster and more useful than the Nissan provided app.
If you have an Android phone this works way better than the Nissan app IMHO: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.darkspawns.leafmanager&hl=en
