I'd highly recommend HelloChinese (IOS & Android) instead of Duolingo for learning Chinese. Its Duolingo plus much, much more!
I will also recommend LingoDeer (Website, IOS & Android) for Korean, Japanese ~~& Chinese~~* (It does teach Chinese but HelloChinese is better in this respect.)
PS: Both are totally free, for those of you ~~cheapskates~~ curious out there.
I can vouch for this and other apps, such as Hellochinese, which is very entertsining.
Hellotalk is also very good for sending voice-messages in chat, which helps getting the tones right and reaching fluency.
Hora de aprender mandarín para mantenerse en la vanguardia y ser un vasallo con buen vivir. Recomiendo la app Hello Chinese, la cual es gratuita y es sobresaliente ya que te enseña pronunciación y caligrafía

If you can find the app hello Chinese it has really helped me learn at my own pace and its free with optional premium content.
Edit: here it is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese
Guys, don't waste time waiting for duolingo's Chinese course since HelloChinese app is already there! It's a clone a duolingo for Chinese and I have been using it for several months, quite comprehensive.

I don't think textbooks help much for self studying. There is no audio, no interaction, only explanations.
If you have a smartphone, then try out some app which uses an interactive way to teach you. HSK 1 is very easy to pass. With a good tool, you only need at most 2 months with 20 minutes a day.
I recommend HelloChinese .

Good luck!
Just start! ^_^
If you want a recommendation, try this application:

It has a lot of free content. I have been going for over 3 weeks and I'm not even halfway. (I'm going at the maximum spead)
HelloChinese was recommended over Duolingo in the past, not sure how the free plan is though.
There are some truly fantastic Mandarin decks on AnkiDroid which is totally free.
You can check out the Hello Chinese app. It's one of the nicest ways to get started.

What language are you learning? If it's Chinese, HelloChinese is light years ahead. Duolingo felt more like memorization with a shitty technique instead of actually learning the language.
Hello Chinese app on google play store is pretty good to get you started, imo. It takes a month to finish if you do it everyday, doing one topic per day. I usually finish a topic and review the older ones. It's so much better at teaching you than duolingo.

It's lots of fun. It is like a high school course with under 30 people per class, and there is lots of class participation.
They use the book "New Practical Chinese Reader Vol 1". This book is divided into 13 lessons. CHINA 101R goes through lessons 1-6 (sometimes 7), CHINA 102R goes through 7-13. There is also a workbook with practice questions.
I think about every two weeks you have a quiz based on the lesson you go over, along with workbook questions due. I wouldn't consider the workload high, if you do like 20 min a day you will have no problem remembering all the words and characters. Also Yan Li is the best.
Edit. If you want to get a head start I recommend using the Hello Chinese App (if you have Android). It explains all the basics and is good for when you just have a few min to spare. It's a bit like Duolingo if you have used that.
I personally recommend HelloChinese App. It teaches Pinyin first and then quickly start to teach vocab and grammar. It also teach speaking and handwriting in an interactive way. Going to have conflicts with HelloChinese.
SCR Screen Recorder (XDA link) - requires root. My favourite screencast app.
XDA Labs (XDA link) - still in alpha, but this will eventually replace XDA One as the official XDA app. It looks pretty nice so far, too! A must for anyone who reads/posts to XDA regularly.
OGInstagram (XDA link) - a modified version of the Instagram app. You can see if someone is following you, view profile pictures, enlarge pictures, download content, and share content directly with a URL.
HelloChinese - a new app to learn Mandarin Chinese.
There are multiple places to start. I recommend geting a textbook. There are many, but some of the most recommended textbooks for Mandarin are Integrated Chinese and NPCR - choose your fancy. I didn't start with a textbook however (too classroom based for me). I started with the Hello Chinese app. which can be foud here:
Iphone - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hellochinese-learn-chinese/id1001507516?mt=8
Android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese&hl=en_US
This app will get you to about a hsk1 level. After you complete what this app has to offer you can use the Chinese Grammar Wiki and a Vocabulary learning program to study the other hsk levels.
Grammar Wiki - https://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Main_Page
Anki - https://apps.ankiweb.net/
Anki Decks - https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks/mandarin

You probably wont need this for a while, but it still might be useful in some ways. this website is for listening pracice. Click sentice practice then choose your settings. Since your a beginner start on easiest then work your way up. Even if you dont know some of the words on easiest take this chance to learn them and add them to your own personal anki deck.

Thats about all I recommend. Maybe the others have somethinge else to say? :) P.S - There are more resources on the sidebar.
I'm currently using an app, it's pretty good:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese
Funny you mention Duolingo, since that's the other thing not recommended in the resource list (from Discord)
> Apps to learn Chinese:
> Good: Hellochinese - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese&hl=en_CA (the “old lessons” are free)
> Lingodeer - https://www.lingodeer.com/ ($)
> Pimsleur - https://www.pimsleur.com/ ($$),
> HSK - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hskonline&hl=en_CA ($)
> Bad: Duolingo. (Seriously, don’t do it, fam.) Rosetta Stone.
I started with Duolingo and later switched to HelloChinese which I found is much better in every way. Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese&hl=en
I recently tumbled on another great app called "Dong Chinese" which is great for remembering characters. Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.peterolson.chinse.dongchinese&hl=en
This kind of question has been asked many times.
The best one is definitely Skritter: https://www.skritter.com (hmm, it's not free and even expensive)
An alternative is HelloChinese but with less characters:
Apple App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1001507516
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese
Hope this helps.
Ótimo app e método.
pare hace rato pero esta app es mas que genial te mide hasta la pronunciación y caligrafía
HelloChinese, it's an app to learn Mandarin
If you're learning by yourself, from scratch, you should definitely find some good audio/video to mimic. The foundation of your Chinese is going to built on how well you learn Pinyin (The Chinese Alphabet) at the beginning and the tones! Both of these will take a long time to get use to. Your ear will have to get used to being able to tell the difference between similar sounds (Like zh and j) and similar tones (2nd tone and 3rd tone). Eventually, you're going to need to handle all this in really time. Here's a video pinyin sounds to get started.
Spend a good deal of time learning the most 100 common words (pronunciation, character, meaning, and more) and then using the basic building blocks of grammar to connect them into contextual sentences. There's no Duolingo for beginning chinese, but HelloChinese or ChineseSkill apps are both ok to get you going.Would also recommend finding a good beginner textbook -- either the one you'll use for your semester. Good luck!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese you mean that one?
Some online apps that are recommended
HelloChinese https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese
https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1001507516
and look at the external resources here: http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Chinese
Found it, it was this
Did you mean this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese ?
Yes. It's both available on App Store and Play Store. here is the link for Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hellochinese
For Mandarin I recommend Hello Chinese. Another decent one is Chinese Skill but I think Hello Chinese is better.
