Hi everyone, Thought this might be of interest to you with regards to helping elderly have a better experience on Android tablets. I am working on a project to introduce an easy to grasp interface for those who find technology frustrating and have to ask family members for help. The launcher first explains how to use a typical android tablet, and then takes the user to an intuitive interface. I am really keen to hear your feedback and suggestions. The launcher and screenshots can be found at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=magootablet.com.magoolauncher
I look forward to hearing from you
I'm in the same situation as you and I'll tell you right now the iPad might not work so well. Been there, done that. Even at its largest font size, the iPad text is tiny. You might think its easy to use, for you, but it's really not for granny. My granny is 87 years young! 87 years where she did without electronics. She can't operate an iPad, period.
So I found through trial and error that an Android tablet is better for this because you can genuinely make large text. Even the smaller screen Xiaomi Mi Pad (its super cheap and shipping is free and overnight) is better for this combined with Wiser, a launcher for Grandma.
There are other alternatives such as:

Ultimately now granny reads her Want Want China Times and newspapers because I set the link there for her. I have it plugged in on an extra long cable that is permanently attached with Sugru putty. Calls to her come in loud and clear since I made sure she can't adjust the volume. The camera is positioned so she can see me and her. Also, unlike the iPad, I have remote control over the android tablet so I can fix things for her remotely. I also purchased a Xiaomi Yi camera positioned over the area so I can help her remotely over the phone, which also is placed conveniently nearby.
I went all out, so total costs was 6999NT for the Xiaomi tablet, 500NT for the Sugru, 150NT for the extra long cable for the tablet, and 1299NT for the Xiaomi Yi monitoring cameras (I brought two more for the bathrooms just in case) and associated memory cards at $399 so I have a week's worth of monitoring if I need to go back.
