I always recommend Media Utilities. Works with most major music players (including spotify), highly customizable. It's a work in progress, so it may be glitchy, but when it works, it works well!
edit: link
Media Utilities is what I used to use. It works with most of the major media players including spotify, but it's kind of glitchy. Allows you to customize alot in terms of look, size, control, album art etc. It's in beta, hence why I said glitchy, but when it works it's awesome.
Try Media Utilities. It's a really old plugin that never made it out of beta but works wonderfully for me with a few different music players. It can simulate Play/Pause for the currently active app.
Keep in mind you'll probably want to set focus to your audiobook app first, then simulate the Play button after a few second wait.
FYI, for anyone wanting to do this there are Tasker plugins that have done this for a long time.
Dropbox link here. Forgot to mention that it also uses Media Utilities
I guess you could try the Media Utilities plugin, beware though it's not guaranteed to work on your specific device because it hasn't been updated in a while, but it's still worth a shot.
Media Utilities is a rather old app that I used to use for controlling whichever media player I was currently using without having to have too many widgets. I believe the widget is customizable to remove the buttons, but I'm not sure if it can be blank when not playing
The Media Utilities plugin is no longer in development, and its last update was about 4 years ago, so it'd be a surprise if any of it works ;)
You may want to look more towards Tasker's Media actions and controls, as well as some of the AutoApps solutions.
> The Music Utilities is an app/plugin that checks music state and can activate a profile when music is playing and when music stops.
I guess you mean Media Utilities ?
> Hasn't been updated in years
To say the least! Current version 0.0.152, latest update december 2013
For the same purpose, since many (all?) audio players post a notification when playing, I'm using an Autonotification based state profile which turns phone "to do not disturb" mode when active.
That will open the Hue Disco any time you open spotify when you're connected to home WiFi. If you're fine with that cool otherwise you could use Media Utilities to detect if music is playing before launching the Disco app
Ok I think I got half of your task done. You'll need Tasker and media utility add the media app you want your notification to catch.
Go into settings of media utility and enable it.
Now go to Tasker and check state>plugin>media utility and check the first option when music is playing. Now make a new task. This I don't know how to do it. Hope that helps .
.
PS: when you enable media utility, it'll make its own notification. Make sure don't clear that notification or else Tasker won't work.
Sorry it took so long to reply. You have to put a python script there. Put this file in the /qpython/scripts folder on your SD card. Then it should work.
It pulls the album art from an app called Media Utilities which once downloaded, open and go into settings and select 'make album art available'.
Then the Tasker task should work properly. Once again sorry for the hold up.
I made today a profile for Google Play Music with the help of this plugin: Media Utilities. It has a state for when there is music playing or not.
Hm i don't have much experience with either of those, i can't really say.
You could use Media Utilities' MU_ISPLAYING state to check that it is finished. Could be clunky though.
This plug in should be able to detect metadata changes so you could look for track name changes and then turn the display on.

Unfortunately it may not work on lollipop lollipop marshmallow as it was a updated for 4.3. Let me know if it works for you!
I came here to suggest Media Utilities, which can be used to set %MTRACK even when your current media player doesn't support that natively. You may want to look into that anyway; it's free and does a few other things too.
That said, I like /u/Ratchet_Guy's answer better if all you want is a binary yes/no answer to the question of whether music is playing. I've switched over a few tasks to use that approach now.
I originally came here to suggest Media Utilities, which (among other things) sets %MTRACK for music players that don't do it themselves. It works for me when using Rocket Player, for example. EDIT: Derp, I see now that you mention it too, and that it doesn't work well for people. This is why I shouldn't reddit after midnight.
That said, your java solution is all I need for my tasks so far, so I've uninstalled Media Utilities and will try the java way. Thanks for posting that!
If I remember correctly, it had something to do with Media Utilities. But I am honestly not sure, and if I was right, I don't remember how to implement it. Sorry man.
Here is the link for the app though.

Every music app functions differently as it relates to how it can be externally controlled.
Some media apps can be controlled simply through downloading the Tasker plugin Media Utilities. Create a profile that watches for the specific music app you're looking to play opens, and then set it to trigger a Task with a single Action>Plugin>Media Utilities>Play. TaskerLinks Media Utilities
If Media Utilities doesn't happen to do what you want with a certain media app, there's Tasker/Android "Intents". These are app specific commands that may, or may not, work when you send them to the app. You have to Google Search or on reddit for Intents specific to your app and use Tasker's Intent Action to send them.
The other method that is pretty much guaranteed to work with almost any app is the Tasker plugin AutoInput. Will take some learning but it can basically go to any app and click any buttons and do anything else you could do with your hands on the phone.
In your case I would start with Media Utilities. Then create the simple Profile>App and list all the relevant media apps in that profile, and link it to a Task with a few second wait period (to give the app time to fully open) and then Media Utilities>Play
Oh, I absolutely get that, media controls are awful to assign. But these seems to be working for the time being. It's due to use of Media utilities in combination with little Zooper widget. Files for that are here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vc914il531bekhn/music_widget.zw?dl=0
Sure, Install Media Utilities from the app store, open it up and in the upper right corner add Spotify as a media app, also in the settings you need to allow notification access to media utilities.
Next install flat for zooper widget which contains the music widget I use, you'll need zooper pro. Drop that on the homescreen (I think that I'm using a 9x6 grid and the 6x2 widget), start playing music through spotify and check that the widget works as it should. If does then you can click the widget to change its OnTap action to open spotify and you're done
Hello, somebody else may have a better idea than me, but I remember using Media Utilities in the past.
I think it was called Music Utilities
Thanks! Which one is media utilities plugin... This one??
Some widgets need Media Utilities, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.batescorp.notificationmediacontrols.alpha
I think Media Utilities might work, set the preferred gesture to Media Utilities actions.

It also adds additional media variables and can do things like automatically get album art for music, movies, TV shows, and audiobooks. The playstore link. ...Please Note: I am a Bot.. Wonder if you can tap into this "Media Utilities"?
Yes, I agree. The OPs usage of the words 'how' and 'to' in combination in this instance is incorrect. I'd suggest using "How do I," "Help,"or something similar in the future. It will help prevent the question from sounding rhetorical.

Ahh yes- "Bluetooth Connected." Tasker has the ability to monitor whether ones phone is connected via Bluetooth to another device. You can optionally specify a MAC address or Device Name. Important Note- This state monitors the connect/disconnect, and NOT active connection. ...Please Note: I am a Bot.. To report errors or request additions, message /u/letestaccount
As I wrote in the main comment: Media utilities, Metadata widget. It's tricky, but highly customizable.
