Also, I rather enjoy Duolingo. It doesn't always speak out the words, but it does alot.
If you can't communicate properly there will be a lot of fuck ups, so it will be pretty handy to know how to say "sorry", which is "desculpa".
If you fuck up really badly say " caralho... desculpa". If this is too hard to pronounce say "puta que pariu... desculpa".
Most online translators can read Portuguese for you. So use them to learn the pronunciation.
Better than all of the above though, would be to install the new Microsoft translator app for android and use it to communicate with each other.

Stolen from my reply on a friends facebook wall about this:
Given that real time speech translation is a HUGE problem to solve, and requires massive amount of processing overhead/infrastructure (typically done in the cloud), I'm guessing these guys are just selling a $300 bluetooth headset that interfaces with Microsoft or Google real time translation services via an API.
Long story short, you can do this right now, for free, on your phone, and it's really cool. No $300 earpiece required.

You never regret the things in life you've tried 😊
Also, download a translation app like this; https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.translator (for android) It goes a long way to attempt a few words in the native language before asking if you can continue the conversation in English 😄
And keep in mind that subjective feelings/opinions like "I hate this place" or "I love this place" only reflects on them, and how they perceive life.-they would probably love or loathe another spot on 🌏🌍🌎
Good luck 👍
Edit: Sorry, never read the (offline) bit.

Capture & then share it to Microsoft Translator
I'm using Microsoft Translator - Google Translate didn't appear as a share option.
Use a camera based translator app like Microsoft Translator. Translate each screen and follow the instructions until you can get in and change the language/location.
Here's a link to it in the Google Play store if you have Android:

I use Microsoft Translator. Good offline dictionaries, camera translate etc. Not necessarily more privacy orientated, but I prefer it being outside of the Google ecosystem.
