Thanks, I've taken your advice and it looks like that'll work.
I've submitted a bug report on jira as there was a commit for led activated on battery charge added in the latest nightly so it looks like a regression bug.
For anyone else wanting to turn off the led this is the app I used: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.akexorcist.motoxled
All I needed to get that LED working was to root the phone and load any of several Motorola notification light apps like this one.
It's not a big deal though, the light is pretty dim. The fact that it's behind the frosted glass (I have a blue phone) contributes, but I think that Motorola didn't ever intend that to be a "notification" LED. It's probably there for some other reason.
This is the exact app that you've heard so much about. It only enables the LED while the phone is charging, but it's got some pretty cool functionality for when the phone is plugged in. It says it's for Moto X and Moto E only, but it works with the 3rd gen Moto G too.
There is an app designed for rooted Moto Xs & Moto Es to control the LED (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.akexorcist.motoxled). I attempted to use it on my harpia (Moto G4 Play), but it only worked for turning the LED off. Would be nice if there were an app like this for the Moto G.
But, it sounds like from some if the comments, the hardware is not capable of functioning as anything other than a charging notifier. I think that is poor design as well. And I also dislike that the placement of the LED is below the display instead of above. It is more intrusive & distracting when I am laying down in low light as the bright LED is generally closer to my eyes.
Well if it has an led than you can used. Install LightFlow and give it a try.
Also when this device gets rooted you can try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.akexorcist.motoxled
