>Some people I know have been thru a few different ones after it bricks or whatnot.
Sounds like you and your friends are hard on phones. I'm still in my original case and no screen protector. It has no scratches, chips, or blemishes.
I played around with rooting so I could try the retail ROM as well as my A1 (went back to A1 to keep getting updates). Never even had a hint of a brick.
I bought replacement glass on Amazon here: Eaglestar Black True Glass Lens Cover Rear Camera Glass Replacement for Motorola Moto X4 X 4th XT1900+Repair Tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B2RMPWM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RwB5AbCZJAV35. It took only about five minutes to replace and is just like new!

NO its not.

why am I even here?
All version of the moto x4 have an SD slot and fingerprint reader
Can you do what /u/toadlytoast asked? > can you take a screenshot of settings > system > about phone and also a picture of your phone
Just a tip... You can create short Amazon URLs for most items like this...
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072N3WT4J
...where the part at the end is the ASIN number from the product information section of the page. They also have an even shorter domain amzn.com but some reddit forums block them as spam.
+1
I would just install Twilight if it's bothering you. I think You can pull a request on the Moto Community site too.
Can you describe your usage case? Like what app did you install?
I installed ARCore but there is no app icon. Nothing I can interact with yet.
I got one of the Supershield brand for mine. I have a black phone so the black outline doesn't bother me but it has protected my phone before and I've replaced it with the spare. I'd recommend it for function and in my opinion the cutouts match up very nicely.
Edit: I just noticed the picture on amazon shows it has a section missing at the bottom. Mine don't have that and my girlfriend's didn't either. But they could have changed their product I guess. I might buy another since I am out of spares now
The screen protector has to do more than just fit the screen size. It also has to have openings of the right size and at the right positions for the speaker, camera, etc. to still function. From what I've read, this was a problem with some of the early x4 screen protectors.
At the time I bought my x4, the only screen protector I could find that was said to fit well was the IQ Shield. About $8 with Amazon Prime, so not too expensive. Specifically, this one: https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Coverage-Anti-Glare-Generation-Bubble-Free/dp/B01MYGMGCN/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1515687182&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=motorla+x4+screen+protector
It fits perfectly, and does cut down on glare somewhat, despite being closer to "glossy" than the advertised "matte."
One thing I particularly liked about the IQ Shield was its wet application system. You clean your screen, spray the same cleaner on the sticky side of the protector, position it, then squeegee out the excess cleaner with an included rubber wedge. That process makes it easier to keep dust from getting between protector and screen, vs. dry application systems.
However, the IQ Shield is not tempered glass. It's a somewhat elastic plastic film. This does protect quite well against scratches, and is easier to reposition without breakage than a tempered glass shield. But it provides little to no impact protection.
I've been thinking about installing a SuperShieldz tempered glass protector instead:
This is a much better alternative. I have been using it (free and later "pro" paid version) for many years on a wide variety of phones.

No adware at all.
This app may give you a better idea of what's taking up your space. Also, get an SD card and point any app you can to it. You can get a high quality 64GB card for $20. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage
The Android one program has a requirement of providing patches within 90 days max, are Motorola breaching that commitment?
I currently own a Moto G3 2015 and that used to receive atleast quarterly security updates, so I'm fine if thats the same case for the Moto x4.
edit: my bad, mixed it up with the Android enterprise program, which is also applicable for the moto x4

Are you using a Quickcharge charger? If yes, check the connections. Sometimes lint or debris can get in there and you won't get Turbo Charge. Also if possible try a different charger. If the charger or cord is starting to get old they might not work for turbo charging. My original charger had the cord split. Now I use these chargers from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019GQ6S2C They work great for turbo charging and I can replace the cord if it frays or I need something with a different length.
Get this one, it's in my phone. Evo select. It's U3 speed. The sandisk on Amazon for the same price is the slower U1 speed.

I used the free version to try it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simi.screenlock When I knew that I was pleased, I upgraded to the paid version. I put the icon immediately above my touchpad. Works great for me. Good luck!
Maybe use blank widget? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wordpress.chislonchow.blanklockwidget
The easy way is to just install this app. The hard way is to remove the stock launcher, and then you also get the old recent apps menu back.
Unless you are on android pie 9, you don't need to root your phone. One substratum theme that I use since we were on nougat is swift black. I really like that you can use a system-wide black theme and it also does what you want: to change the accent colour. It costs about one dollar and, sadly, they're not giving me any money for this commercial haha :p
Anyway, good luck
I do have the retail us moto version (non-Amazon Prime).
Upon closer inspection, it looks to be part of Moto Suggestions
Open Camera is on the Play Store

Don't forget to configure your apps to use the SD instead of internal storage. Also, Google's Files Go app now lets one better manage the SD card. I just moved some stuff over yesterday.

>there is no WIPE DEVICE CACHE option on this phone
That cache wipe feature is gone for good as we have seamless update A/B partition feature.
If your photos are backed up, you will be able to check them out at photos.google.com
I am not sure if my next suggestion would make things worse for you, but since there is A/B partition, can you try to boot the alternate partition?

Yes, it's here the price went back to normal tho. Be warned it might not work with US carriers your 4G LTE frequency is different from ours. I bought two one for me and another for my brother in US but I found it his sim card Cricket-wireless won't work with this phone with 4G so I sold it for 270$ ( Including GST tax I was charged 250$ while buying, per phone)
Are you following these directions?
If so, it sounds like you are trying to install it directly rather than from the SD card. You have to boot the phone into TWRP "temporarily" and then use TWRP to install itself from the SD card.
It can be confusing if you've never worked with A/B partitions before.
You need to find a full system image and reflash your phone with it before starting over.
> SMSbackup
Not sure if we're talking about the same thing but I can definitely vouch for SMS Backup & Restore. I haven't used it in a while but it was super easy to pull the backup off my phone via USB, and I believe there are a few alternate ways to get the files as well. I've only used the free version.
I do not know if it backs up RCS text info.
I put one of these in my 32GB Amazon Prime X4: https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-256GB-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter/dp/B0758NHWS8/ Now plenty of storage for music, videos and photos
I started a thread in the Lenovo forums a few months ago and we were asked to provide bug reports and phone and car unit information, but as today no solution has been provided from Motorola.
Some users suggested using different cables. I tried most of the suggested cables but the problem didn't want to go away. Then someone suggested this Amazon cable (AmazonBasics USB Type-C to USB-A Male 3.1 Gen2 Adapter Charger Cable - 3 Feet (0.9 Meters) - White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GGKYS6E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Ew0iDbC14VGG5) and I was not going to try it since the other cable suggestions didn't work. But I went ahead and ordered it anyway and just like other people have reported, I haven't had a disconnection since.
I purchased an X4 in October of 2017 and I'm still using it. I have no regrets whatsoever.
However, if you do get and X4, there are two things to be aware of...
Two of my friends bought X4 phones shortly after I bought mine and they both fast charge while I only use the slow charger from my old Motorola Droid 3 with a USB to USB C cable that I got for a few bucks on Amazon.
Both of my friends' phones have swollen batteries, one of them bad enough that she recently replaced it with a Moto G Power. If you look at their phones from the side, the screens bulge slightly in the middle and the glass is separating on the sides.
As an aside, she really likes the Moto G Power so far. The battery life is insane.
There's an app I've used for years on my Nexus 7 (which has a broken sensor) called "Rotation Locker". I also used it on an old phone to use it as a dashcam.
If you tap, it will temporarily change orientation. If you hold the word down, it will run as a background process and keep forcing it.
I'm not sure I understand your question, are you asking about switching networks on Fi, or using this phone on another carrier? If you're talking about Fi, there is a slick app I use called Signal Spy, which allows you to manually switch networks on the fly with dialer codes and also shows a persistent notification in the status bar, so you always know what network you're on: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.novvia.fispy

AFAIK those are the only way to influence the look of the stock launcher. If you want to mess with the launcher, def go with Nova -- tons of options and look-and-feel changes that you can make.

I just searched "notification logger" in the play store. The first result looked good, so I used it. This is the one I used: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.hcilab.projects.nlog
I kind of wish I knew how to recreate the problem so I could find out if this logger really did work better than the built in logger.
Download this app. Then add the shortcut. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.actionlauncher.pixelshortcuts
It won't show up in the settings, but you can still use the digital wellbeing app.
My guess would be yes, but I'd ask somebody who's got another variant to try it before basing your purchasing decision on hands-free

With the Pie update, Google's gesture navigation is available on the Android One version of the Moto X4. Other models retain Motorola's one-button (finger print reader) navigation instead.
Enabling one-button navigation (to hide the navigation bar) and installing this app provides a Google-style gesture navigation interface with additional features and greater customization.
Google Photos is the best to backup and edit the portrait photos.

From the article:
"Motorola with Google has already updated the Android One Edition of the Moto X4 to Android 8.0 Oreo."
Uhh...no, they haven't. At least, I have't got it yet.
WTF?
That said, I'm actually OK with waiting a bit. At least, I tell myself that other people getting it first means THEY can experience any regressions in behavior and/or major bugs, of which I can be warned & thus put off updating until the problems have been fixed.
My Nexus 5X had 8.1, but there's not anything huge I feel I'm missing by having "only" 7.1.1 on my Moto x4.
It's only been little things, like ability to rearrange the pull-down menu (or maybe I've just forgot how to do it on 7.x?), and having the PrivateVPN app integrated into the pulldown menu.
Anyway, I'm OK with waiting a bit longer.
This isn't the easiest thing to do, but the instructions are pretty good. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats&hl=en_US is a 5* app that can reveal which other apps are holding your phone "awake", or even if the operating system is not sleeping. It does require a usb cable, and some typing on the command line to make it work (thanks Google :( ), but it is incredibly powerful at showing which apps or system processes are blocking sleep.
I think this app allows you to do it without root. Although you might have to do a few command line operations.

Install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.nbu.files maybe it can erase trash.
I used the Disk Usage app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage, to find the cache file that kept taking up all my disk space. The Files Go app is nice, but did not help me with this problem.
All I needed to get that LED working was to root the phone and load any of several Motorola notification light apps like this one.
It's not a big deal though, the light is pretty dim. The fact that it's behind the frosted glass (I have a blue phone) contributes, but I think that Motorola didn't ever intend that to be a "notification" LED. It's probably there for some other reason.
Do you have the latest app for the camera it is available in the play store. At least it didn't auto update for me. Here is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.camera2
For home use I'm just using the included wall charger. In my car I have a Belkin hardwired one that supports turbo charging. It has an additional USB port as well.
Check out the Piktures app - I use this to browse locally and find it better than the Google Photos app (for local browsing) Piktures
All around... I like the Moto X4. Great size, Android One, full hd and USB-C.
S7 is slightly smaller, uses micro USB and has that pesky bloatware. However the ~~4K~~ higher res screen is quite nice.
Mind another potential option? Check out the LG G7 One or V30

Faster processor than the other two phones and you can get them for sub-$200 on Ebay
I just got my Moto x4 as well from the same deal I'm guessing. I picked up a 2 pack of cables that were posted to Slickdeals.
GSMArena reports that it does have NFC: https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_x4-8634.php#xt1900-1
I haven't used mine, but even if I did it would only be for Google Pay. I haven't tried using NFC for anything else.
If I had to guess you either smudged it on the install (did you wear non smudging cotton gloves like these: r/https://tinyurl.com/ycfhlg9h) or the 12 O'clock and 6 O'clock position on the glass matters and you are off by a few degrees. Did the directions say anything about alignment or which side to face out?
Had mine about 14 months and it has held up well. Kept it in a dual layer TPU/polycarbonate case without a screen protector and have dropped it on cement, down a flight of stairs, etc. without any cracks. Having the 64GB storage / 4GB RAM version would have been much better. 32GB storage is cramped, so definitely get the 64GB one (Android One preferred over the Amazon Prime version). I know the battery on the E5 Plus is tempting, I looked at that device as well, but keep in mind the E5 Plus:
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9095&idPhone2=8634#usa,xt1900-1,*
I had no use for NFC before I started using Google Pay but the experience has been so good I wouldn't buy a phone without it.
Yes, it's here the price went back to normal tho. Be warned it might not work with US carriers your 4G LTE frequency is different from ours. I bought two one for me and another for my brother in US but I found it his sim card Cricket-wireless won't work with this phone with 4G so I sold it for 240$
The apk should be out there. Maybe This One?
I've always been an Apex Launcher fan, myself. It's been set as the default launcher on all my devices (motoG, HTC1S, N5X, N7, SGTA3, even my Teclast X98+) for so long, I don't even know what the "vanilla" launcher looks like any more :)
Unless it drops sometime before the end of the quarter this month (unlikely), I doubt it will ever come. I gave up on it and got a Pixel 4 when it was on sale and gave my X4 to my 90 year old Dad (with Baldphone launcher on it).
If it does update, I'll be very happy. I'll also be surprised 😏
Correct. It also says "Android One" on the back of the phone: https://www.android.com/static/2016/img/devices/phones/moto-x4/super-black-back_1x.png
Typically, you get 2 major OS upgrades and 3 years of security patches. At least with Android One devices. Flagships get that, too. My 2016 galaxy s7 is still get security patches (currently on Dec 1st 2018). I think all the x4s will get patches for at least 3 years. The X4 is Android Enterprise Recommended.
https://www.android.com/enterprise/device-collection/#android_enterprise_recommended
Not sure which edition you have. On my 32Gb X4, I often run quite low on space due to the number of apps I use on the phone.
Based on my use, I am more suitable with 64Gb or even 128Gb.
I'd suggest OP installing Google Files, and use that app to free up some spaces.
The best you can do is to have Chromecast, and mirror your screen to the display.
Alternatively, scrcpy if you wanted to display something to your computer monitor (audio doesn't carry over to your computer. just video)
> Shake Torch
Shake Torch or Shake-Torch? The latter's rated higher and has 10x the reviews, but not what you wrote... I tried a couple apps a while back and they didn't work when the screen was off so I gave up. Looking again there are quite a few more called "shake torch" that maybe you could be referring to
Go to the play store and download DiskUsage. Right after you launch the app it will give you a choice: do you want to look at the phone's internal memory? Then choose "Storage Card" (Confusing, I know. Calling built-in internal memory "storage card" is an android thing.) If you want to see what's on your MicroSD card, you'll want to choose the other option, which will be different on your phone, but will probably look something like /storage/867-5309.
The app will scan the data on the storage you choose, and then graphically display the data, giving you an overview of what's on there. Don't worry you can't mess anything up with this app. Free space is shown at the bottom in green.
If you find that all of your pictures are on your internal memory and not on the MicroSD card, you'll need to move them to make more room for apps on your phone's internal memory (as well as configure you phone's camera to only save things on the SD card from now on).
If you find that you need to move things around on your phone (from internal memory to the SD card) you will need a file manager app to do that, something like ES File explorer or Total Commander. Be very careful with file manager apps, and be darn sure you fully understand how to use them before you make changes to your files.
It used to work for me with no issues, but for the past 2 months it hasn't been.
Mint Mobile (works on T-mobile's network) recommended this voicemail app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vna.service.vvm but it just gets stuck at registration.
Where did you see Omoton X4 tempered glass ones? I'd love a link; I couldn't find them on amazon and they're usually my go to brand...
Edit: Aaaaannnnd I'm blind.
Can confirm that I love Omoton though. I tried many kinds of Nexus 5x tempered glass protectors and Omoton has the best feel and adhesive. Their customer service is great too.
Well for what's worth I ended up going to OEM Motorola. Got it at Amazon and it's the real deal Motorola product. Works well and I am happy with it.

Here's a better option.... I got this 10000mAh power pack from Amazon for 20 bucks and not only does it quick charge, but its also portable (obviously)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XRVHDLM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_KUGtCb491P74Z
I just found this ultra-slim case on amazon and going to give it a shot. All the bad reviews complain that the case is too thin and doesn't feel like it would adequately protect the phone... That's exactly what I'm looking for!
https://www.amazon.com/SLMY-Resistant-Silicone-Protective-Generation/dp/B075ZNR1PJ/
The only brand name case available in stores is from Incipio. It's just a simple gel case and not very protective. Best Buy sells a clear version, while Target sells a smoke grey version. Otherwise, you'll only find Chinese brands on Amazon or eBay. This is my favorite, fairly slim, yet protective, and a snug fit:

I also bought mine for the same price on Amazon about a week ago. This was the case I ended up buying for it.
I wasn't sure if it's okay to post links here, or not, so I just read the User Agreement and Reddit Content Policy. Looks like it's okay.
To be clear, I'm not trying to sell anything. I have no affiliation with the product below. If this link is against the rules, please let me know.
Anyway, I like my Moto X^(4) just fine, and the charger is adequate, but I was disappointed with the chintzy OEM charging cord. I bought a 2-pack of "military grade" Type-C braided charging cables on Amazon, and they're working great. The charging rate is just as fast or faster than the cord that was included with the phone.
Thank you so much for the response! It sounds like either one will be a massive upgrade from what I currently use (Kyocera Hydro Air).
This is going to sound like a stupid question, but would this one at Best Buy be considered the A1 or retail version. I see that it's branded AndroidOne on the photos, but it's not mentioned in the description. I'm wondering if they just pulled stock photos for it. This is the Amazon version I'm looking at.
I've got it on my phone as well. Interestingly I use a "Rounded Corner" app (this one), and the discoloration is in a circular shape at the corners, suggesting that black screens avoid this issue. Really surprising since it's an LCD.
I use an app called DiskUsage to find files and folders that take a lot of space.

Install a notification logger (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.hcilab.projects.nlog)
When you have a phantom buzz, check the log to see what app triggered it, then disable notifications for that app. I'd bet it's your Download Manager.
I had the same issue. Found an app to reboot it with. Hated that for a couple of weeks. Then I sent it in for repair and they fixed it in a couple of weeks. Have you had it over or under two years? (important at least if if you're in the EU)

If you're looking to just remove the icon, not change the settings, I use SystemUI Tuner (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zacharee1.systemuituner) to hide icons that get on my nerves. I haven't seen that particular icon, but chances are it'd be able to pick it out.
If you have another USB-C phone you would use something like this https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-Type-C-Charger-Cable/dp/B01GGKZ1VA
All of the lens cover replacement kits I've found online have people complaining about focus issues. I don't know if it's bad batches or operator error.
You have to be careful about glass shards of course, but also dust, fingerprints, and moisture from your breath on the lens.
From the page:
> I use it in my car with a small clamp (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PICAE4C) on my handbrake, but it is compatible with any GoPro-style mounting device you like.
Though I left out the part that attaches the body to the mount and just glued on a metal pad for the magnet. Works pretty well. Your setup may vary based on your car.
If you have access to the same model running stock, you could get the APKs through apps- for example, File Manager+ (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alphainventor.filemanager), which is what I use, creates a copy of the APK file if you choose to "backup" an app. I know this can also be done via ADB, but I find it easier to do it on-device.
Not sure of a way to get the APKs, but you'll not only need to install the Moto app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.moto) but also the Moto Actions app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.actions).
Well ... if you like splitting your screen & don't like the awkward way Android Pie does it ...then installing Split Screen Shortcut ... also gets rid of the bottom right corner button as I recently discovered...just don't start accidentally long pressing that now ....
Install something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor&hl=en_US (but any build.prop editor will do).
Open it, grant it root access, then search for the entry
>ro.mot.android_one=true
and change it to
>ro.mot.android_one=false
Save build.prop, reboot, and voila, in your Moto app you should now have One Touch Nav and Attentive Display (can keep the phone screen on while you're looking at it, regardless of your timeout settings).
Can you try DiskUsage, and see if you can select the card and if so, can you see the layout and size of the files?
This is a safe and useful tool that I've used for many years.

I also have the paid version of GPS status. Normally I'm on the east coast of the U.S., but was on travel on the west coast when I switched it on, so it may have been a false confirmation since I'm normally not in the QZSS footprint.
I use schedules, diff profiles and a widget from Volume Ace: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.braincrash.volumeacefree

I just got the paid version but haven't moved all my settings. Free met all my needs but since I m Happy with it wanted to pay. Not even sure what I get extra with paid.

As your equalizer I suggest:
Under Equalizer Fx Pro | Settings make certain that the following is checked:
Global audio output mix
Works pretty well but stops working fairly regularly - to fix disable & then re-enable by toggling blue round icon.
1) Start with equalizer set to FLAT (not Default)

3) Set Loundness Enhancer to max in Effects.
4) Raise all bars to max in equalizer(remains flat just louder)

 That's odd.
I checked and Motorola has an app that seems very similar to the built-in Files app, I wonder if it will work for you?

Also, I still am stuck with 8.1 so maybe I could port the app? I have no idea how to do so, but, if any of you guys do, please teach me!
It's fairly easy, esp. if you haven't enabled One Button Nav.
This is the one I use right now, it changes colors based on the app you're using: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
That's not the package name. adb shell pm list packages
should show all package names, this would also work.
Make sure to be using it through adb and not a terminal emulator app.
On other versions of the Moto X4, enabling Motorola's one-button navigation (to hide the navigation bar) and installing this app provides a Google-style gesture navigation interface with additional features and greater customization.
I recommend getting a rugged cover fits the phone such that the camera lens is recessed (i.e, not flush or nearly flush with the case). Some cases on Amazon are marked as "rugged" like the Spigen but do not adequately protect the camera cover/lens. I see a case on Amazon that demonstrates what I mean. Please note that I have no experience with the case I'm linking to. I am using the photo to demonstrate how I believe the camera should be protected.

This is what I got, it fits very well, but I do get a bit of a rainbow effect when under certain florescent lights.

I'll remember this if I ever experience another disconnect. However, I just bought an Anker cable and have had no disconnect issues at all. Driving a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage.
Is the Spiegen case this one?

I got this one. First I thought i put it on perfect, it was aligned with no bubbles. But then I realized from certan angles I could see a shimmering puddle of liquid in the middle. This was not a big deal to me because you could mostly not see it at all. Then the screen protector started to slide a little downwards which messed up the alignment but not enough to interfere with anything. Then a couple weeks in a crack appeared at the top.
I'm still using it but I don't think I'd recommend this one. I think the glue they use make it very good for not leaving bubbles but it seems to not dry all the way leaving it prone to movement and then cracking.
Best of luck finding a good one let us know about it when you do.
Maybe the problem is the external mic.
There are different standards for mics such CTIA and OMTP.
I could only record from an external mic with my "Nokia WH-208" with Open Camera (Video settings -> Audio source -> external mic) and Voice Recorder (settings -> audio source -> main mic).
I also tried, but without success, with a Nokia WH-102 and an external mic for PC.
All of them connected in the audio jack.

I also found out that there are such things as TRRS, TRSR, and TRS configurations. It seems that the Nokia WH-208 has a TRRS configuration. There are also expensive adapters.
I recently installed on my X4 the SystemUI Tuner app, and it has a toggle to disable the headphone volume warning (as well as to configure many other things). Might be worth a look.
I found an app that works as well since I too lost the ability and really prefer that....

The left right works great. this app offers up down, but that's not so great.
