What phone do you currently use?
For iOS use this link: https://itunes.apple.com/US/app/id1205476135?mt=8
For Android use this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mpselectmini.matthewupp.mp3dprinterwificonnect
Then you can just connect via IP from you Mac.
For even more information, visit this site as it is an EXCELLENT resource: http://mpselectmini.com/wifi/start
Leave the password field blank if the wireless network is not password protected.
I thought I had this info on the wiki pages already but I didn't.
I just updated the instructions on each wiki page for the Android version and the iOS version of MP 3D Printer WiFi Connect
Step 5 now reads:
5. Enter wireless network password or leave blank if no password is needed.
I also added a Notes section to each page.
Notes • This method will work with SSID & passwords that contain multiple spaces, space(s) at the end, special characters, & lower case characters in any location. • This method will work if WiFi password contains a semicolon ";" • This method will work for configuring open system WiFi networks with no password.
I will update the instructions on the Google Play Store description page later but the iOS App Store instructions will have to remain until the next update. Maybe I will swap out the app background image with a different image and then also update the instructions in the description.
I've had a literal look under the hood - the ESP8266 does get the WIFI settings from the STM MCU from the SD card OK via their serial connection. So something must be missing, or the command is broken.
Matthew Up's App "MP 3D Printer WiFi Connect" for Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mpselectmini.matthewupp.mp3dprinterwificonnect) reports just a few hundred kilobytes but then Google Play Store wants to get 300 MB plus (maybe updates?), so I tried the "Malyan 3D Craft” apk available via https://www.mpselectmini.com/wifi/android_3dcraft and ... success!
How does this work? Which device opens an AP? I was not able to see any connection on my router or an open network via WIFI before (e.g. https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wifi_information_view.html). This probably means unencrypted transfer of the WIFI password (entered into the android app).
And now, it's connected but currently does not show the IP (it did on startup). Also, it phones home to get 3 files: http://malyansys.com/js/pack.js, http://malyansys.com/js/dropzone.js, http://malyansys.com/js/pack.css.
Well, at least something is working. Quite happy with the prints so far.
To clarify: the printer does not download these files itself, but the web-interface, i.e. the browser then loads them from their server.
