There's an app called Mt. Lemmon Science tour on Android. If timed right the app walks you through the changes along the climb. It's very informative and fun. You gotta look for a sign on the side of the road which tells you to start playing the commentary. I think the sign is located near the base of the mountain. Just as you start climbing.
Edit: link
It can be a bit dry, my girlfriend wasn't as enthused about it as I was. And its just timed, it doesn't track your location or anything, but there are several points where it suggests pulling over and those points are perfect for syncing your trip in the event of traffic/speeding.
Also, if you are planning on going in the spring/summer, I recommend going to the ski resort and riding the lift up the mountain. They keep the lift running year round and the view is really nice (I was actually surprised by how high the lifts were, the little bit of clearance you get from the lack of snow is very noticeable). You can either ride the lift back down the mountain or hike down. Its like 1.5 miles and all very much downhill so pretty much any able bodied person can have a pleasant time of it. Mt Lemmon is a pretty small place, so you wouldn't have to go far out of your way.
Also if you are into astronomy there are some fun things to do at UofA's Sky Center (currently shut down for monsoon season). I haven't done any of it because there is generally a several hour time commitment involved but I hope to check it out one day.
Wow, super neat! I'm excited to try it.
