For Android, I like MyTransit NYC. It has the best layout and design of any of the transit apps I've tried. Full set of maps for Subway, Bus, and Trains, service changes, trip planner, and it has a modern UI. There are others that do some combination of these, but not all.
For transit apps, I like MyTransit NYC and others have said good things about Citymapper. Just use Google Maps for directions and the others if you want to look at the map or view scheduled service changes. If it's your first time in NYC, Top of the Rock or the One World Observatory are both worth it.
I use the app: "MyTransit NYC Subway, MTA Bus, LIRR & Metro North" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nyctrans.it&hl=en&gl=US)
It's pretty good, they update constantly on service changes & issues (like planned work/construction).
People will look at you, maybe some will mutter things in regards to you, but you'll be fine. Just be careful about the club scene.
My Sophomore year of college friend badly assaulted a trans person for feeling that he was mislead by someone after having made out with them. But I like to think trans adults (for the most part) see that as a no no, and my friend has always had sever anger issues judging from the things he's told me.
Just be confident in how you carry yourself. If you ever want to hang out with a couple in the city on a weekend feel free to hit me up. Me and my G/F are always up for sightseeing. Though it depends on when you'll be in the city.
I'd suggest avoiding the "bro" scene. Think Astoria. Basically places where large groups of young White men go to drink and chant loudly.
February is BRUTAL. Layers, mittens, scarves, and possibly snow boots, maybe. Oh and avoid taxis. Lyft and Uber are your friend. Subway service is shit on weekends so definitely utilize Google maps and a good MTA app to keep up with the subway service changes. I've been pretty happy with MyTransit NYC.
A little niche but a MyTransit NYC icon would be nice. Amazing work tho
