Google is doing quite a bit with VR that is notable right now, that I also think will keep VR from going totally obscure.
I work in education and we use cardboard VR kits with things like Google Expeditions, which work really really well, get kids engaged, and allows kids to travel that may have never been brought outside their neighborhood before by their parents.
I think things like this will definitely keep VR alive, maybe not from a gaming perspective, but certainly keep it from getting obsolete.
I think the best thing that will happen with VR soon is when more movie services create apps for the headsets like Netflix VR, and when Netflix starts to promote it more. Things like netflix have already pushed out cable, and if people start creating headsets specifically for viewing movies and shows, then it's possible that headsets could push out some of the TV market itself, because they are far more affordable, and take up way less space, and still offer the allure of being able to watch on a big screen. You could market them to professionals who want to use them on breaks, market them to students because of their limited income and dorm space, Market them to children/parents as a quiet alternative to the volume on television. I think that this is where it has the most potential right now.
