Great example of that innovation is the NextBus app - using your phone's location, it will tell you immediately what bus/train stops are in your vicinity, where the buses/trains are headed, and when to expect the next one.
It seems like one of the great impediments to bus travel is not knowing if you're going to wait for 2 minutes for a bus or 30, and I feel like people knowing about this might help eliminate that.
