For one the stuff they showed in the trailer last year but isn't in the game. Like only a tiny portion of the supposed features are in the game right now.
You aren't going to tell me that flinging a ball at a hoop for a random chance of snagging a Pokemon makes a great game right? We've already had those tossing games for quite a while (and even that one has more variation when it comes to just tossing balls). They could've at least given us battles to capture new Pokemon to make it somewhat more of a challenge, it's basically already in the game with gyms, but they didn't even bother.
Just saying that if the game had to cost me any money I would not have bothered with it at all right now.
It's not the same, but the concept of "throwing things at target" is very popular in mobile games.
Back when mobile games were still simple arcade-games, paper toss was immensely popular and is basically the gameplay of catching pokemon. I play a lot of games, so I find throwing pokeballs pretty basic and there's very little physics. But if you're having trouble getting depth and curves properly, i think playing paper toss will help accelerate the understanding.

There's no "curveballs" in paper toss, but it's simulated by wind. So in pogo, you control the wind and in paper toss, the wind is random.
I just tried it and it's basically Paper Toss without the office background and fan :P
Sooooooo Paper Toss Pokemon edition?
Could have just linked the one from the Play Store (yes, it's still there)

For the sake of the environment, may I recommend you download this?
